A murderer’s row with representation from two movies that might be in my all time top ten (sunset Blvd and mulholland), and still it’s Bette Davis without a second thought

Honestly, I couldn't even say if A Dream of Passion is even a good movie, having seen it exactly once in 1982. BUT my reaction to Melina Mercouri as a malaise ridden actress trying to find something to interest her in playing in playing Medea onstage, and the effect her encounters with Ellen Burstyn as the American wife of a cheating Greek husband, imprisoned in Greece for murdering their children and christened "The Modern Medea" by the Greek press, has stayed with me to this day. For an actress going through it, getting in touch with your inner Medea is about as primal as it gets. Also was my introduction to Ellen Burstyn.

(Callas' Pasolini Medea is the better one, though. She plays it like Pasolini had managed to cast Ari Onassis as Jason.)

I'm going with Natalie Portman, but from her performance in Black Swan. Her spiral into the darkness after getting the role of being The Black Swan was mesmerizing. She became the black swan in her mind and it destroyed her sanity. Definitely worthy of her Oscar win.

Count me among the 13 people that saw Clouds of Sils Maria! I liked it a lot, and it may have catalyzed my infatuation with Kristen Stewart as an actress (though sadly Personal Shopper didn’t measure up). I often think about her quote from it, something like “art is like an object. It changes when you look at it from a different angle.”

Nobody was going through as much as Heather Langenkamp playing herself in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.

I'll vote for Mulholland Drive, nothing can go wrong doing that!

*conveniently forgets the final round of this year's Madness where he let his heart win out over his head*

I have an accusation, Gena Rowlands isnt getting more votes because many have not seen Opening Night, it is the ONLY THING i can think of to justify her being so low. Granted, she's behind some legendary performances and she's far from last, but i guess i just dont care, i'm deciding to be outraged just for the heck of it. to me Gena Rowlands gives a PERFECT performance in Opening Night, I couldn't not vote it even with the competition being so stiff. Go watch Opening Night if you havent!

The first person I thought of when I saw this prompt was Naomi Watts. Her scene where she auditions for the film combined with her jokingly doing the bad reading is some of the best and most riveting acting I've ever seen.

A lot of good options, but I literally just watched What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? last night, so that's all I can think about today. Bette Davis is so haunting and terrifying as baby Jane Hudson in this, but still somehow evokes an ounce of empathy for her fragile mental state. It's scary and confusing and I loved it.

Opening Night was the first thing I thought of before even seeing the poll options. That film could have been titled "Myrtle Is Going Through It" and Rowlands is what makes it so compelling.

There are certainly some iconic performances on this list, but in terms of subtlety and humanity, I'll take Binoche. The film itself is an ethereal take on "going through it," and she's entirely watchable without leaning into histrionics.
