I wonder how many state HIEs will uphold their ethical principles and say no, foregoing the economic and political advantages of this immoral approach to research. I won't hold my breath for an answer.

As usual, Dr. Jayne is right on!!! Even if I believed the data analysis was going to be done in a scientifically valid way, unaffected by anti-vax, anti-intellectual biases, there is no need to use or request access to identifiable data. In this situation, the likelihood is that identifiable information will be used for unscientific reasons to promote political agrndas. There also seems to be a very real possibility that it will be used for nefarious and/or discriminatory purposes. So "Hell no." is the only appropriate response.

Not just no, but hell no. Any work they need to do can be done with deidentified data.
