I think that costumes should only be applied to signify that a power-up is in use as was common for most of the series (e.g. Fire Flower).

I like the inclusion of costumes, but only if different costumes provide some kind of game-play effect such as resistance to a type of damage (e.g. Donkey Kong Bananza).
