Strategic planning 2: What is the purpose of a university?
To pass on the combined wisdom of the ages to the next generation.
To bump its graduates up a tax bracket or two.
To keep undersirables off the streets.
To provide research and/or services to the private sector at public expense.
To be a centre for learning and research for its own people and the wider community.
To provide revenue to consultants.
To round any square pegs.
To encourage squareness in round pegs.
To be one of the last places in our society from which to stand aside and take a clear look at who we are and where we have been.
To be an emblem of culture, learning, and the life of the mind.
To train workers, and at no cost to industry.
To provide professional as well as academic training.
To produce well-rounded human beings.
To produce good citizens.
To develop the habit of questioning in our students and ourselves.
Hey, I just came for the parties.
To maintain and increase universal knowledge.
To be an elitist drain on those who have to work for a living.
To benefit the wider community, directly and indirectly.
To avoid "real life."
To taste, test, and embrace life.
