Having been the cheater myself in both situations, I can decidedly say that the long term affair is more dangerous. Flings that I have had over the course of my 20 year marriage were only out of lust, curiosity, boredom or anger/spite and meant absolutely nothing. I have been in a long term (17 year) affair and it is definitely love.
