It seems to take away the funtionality of a laptop and the portability of an iphone. I was suprised at the price, as apples computers are often overpriced. It doesn't have anythin I need.
No USB? Not able to install or run applications? Can't edit files? Can't make or receive calls? No built-in camera? Hence, no video conferencing/calls? No video recording or editing? No flash? Sight.... This thing is just full of NO. This is definitely not a portable computer. This is just an enlarge IPhone/IPod Touch. No need for that. This device should be able to act like a net-book, at least. What is it bridging? Cupertino needs to rethink this device, it is half-baked.

Absolutely agree with a lot of ppl who say that it is just a bigger version of iPod Touch. Just ask yourself a question "What exactly you can use it for?" :
- listen to music , watch movie, reading a book, playing games (well, just games for iPod Touch or iPhone)..any of the iPad feature can be found in an iPod Touch, and it cannot fit in your pocket like an iPod Touch.
It doesnt make any sense.

I'll be waiting for the 2nd gen I think. Main thing this one seems to be missing is a webcam.
Shame on Steve Jobs and Apple for not learning from their largest mistake on the iPhone: AT&T. For a very progressive company, it is sad to see them not LISTEN to their potential customer base when it comes to cell providers. I will avoid this maxiPad (Mac's iPad, get it?) just like I avoid my wife's.
One can only hope that AT&T's exclusive on the iPhone didn't get extended when they got the rights to this super-sized iPhone.

I like it, but I will wait..I learned my lesson with the first gen iphone...will not make that mistake again..let them fix any glitches then lower the price then I am all in

I will get a thin and light laptop/netbook if i want to go around carrying a bag.
Personally I own a Iphone and a MBA, so do not see any reason to buy Ipad

It is missing lot of basic functionality you expect from a device at this price point and a company like apple. Agree it can do more than kindle or any e-book reader do, at least it should have multitasking capabilities to use all the stuff it do. As usual, apple will do this in their next rev, with lower price. hey Kudos to those marketing folks at apple.

I already have an iPhone, it has voice calling, texting, camera, and all that. Its interesting and for older folks who just brose the web or like to look at pictures, its alright. Not living up to what I was expecting.

64 gb HDD

Lenovo LePhone Android phone or
Lenovo IdeaPad Hybrid U1

No HDMI port? really? and like all new apple products when you buy the "first edition" you become a Guinea Pig for Apple, If i was to buy an IPAD it would be next year when they work out all the kinks and deal with all the complaints from the clowns who buy the "first edition"

Was really hoping for a net book with out a keyboard. I'll stick with my Itouch for now.
Jay - 16 years ago
For what it does - and doesn't - do, I don't need it. It's basically an iPod Touch on steroids. If it were more like a notebook - i.e., if you could run a full-featured office suite on it - I'd be more interested.

I was certainly curious about what they were going to rollout with this. First off the name is terrible. I get it iPod iPad. But to me it sounds like a high tech feminine hygiene product. It appears to operate like a iTouch. This could have been called the iGiantTouch. I agree no skype on this device is woeful. And being forced to go with AT&T considering this is a new device for the company and isn't roped in with the iPhone this would have been a great time to breakout from AT&T and give the Verizon network a test with a device from Apple. Also a friend and I question the keyboard. Don't you rest your fingers on the keys while inbetween typing/thinking won't that start inserting asdfjkl; randomly? how will that play out (I don't know because I haven't tried)? Between my home PC, iPhone, 3 other iPods. I think I can live without this. I don't want to be a hater because I was getting a little geeked about this product it just doesn't seem to hit on what I would be using it for. I bet future generations will be improved upon and that they will be able to push this onto other wireless networks.

I don't see why I would buy this when I can get the lenovo Ideapad and have a netbook and a tablet in one. O yea and I get a webcam and 3g

Why would I want to buy something which is a blown up version of Ipod touch which I cant take around without a bag.

On paper it's an intriguing product. Apple's strength has always been its execution; good products combined with excellent software and media integration.
That said, I'll wait until the terms regarding print-media distributution are made more clear (i.e. the variety of content available, pricing). I have a Kindle, but I would be interested in a full color device which could display broadsheet newspaper content as well as text-book content. I wouldn't be interested in a 3G enabled model, as I'd prefer to avoid AT&T altogether (I'm on Verizon, and a satisfied Moto Droid user).
I also want to wait for the product's quality to be confirmed; I have newfound misgivings regarding the quality of Apple's products having purchased a new 27" iMac in December which was inflicted with a yellow-jaundiced screen. After recieving two replacement machines, each displaying the same issue, I requested a full refund, which was granted (poor product, good customer service). I'm a long time Apple customer, but from here on out I'll let other early-adopters to confirm Apple's quality control efforts before shelling out my hard-earned cash.

So I don't get how a 64 gig i-touch can cost $400 and a 64 gig I pad costs $700. I mean isn't it 4 times bigger, why is the i-touch so expensive then. And they are sticking with AT&T??? I mean you pay for your i-phone service, home service and now another AT&T service??? I'm sure the machine works fine but my critique is more of AT&T's service. And what will the i-pad really be used for? Too big to be a music player, wouldn't want to carry it around to show photos. Maybe watching movies and a book reader. I think the i-phone/i-touch is a better deal if you are on the go like everybody is. I'll check it out at the apple store. Maybe my imagination will kick in and make me realize other possible applications for such a device. I will wait and see, but it really doesn't seem revolutionary. Its just looks like a big i-phone/i-touch.

Like everything else Apple makes, first-generation iPad doesn't interest me, but I'll be paying close attention by the third or fourth gen.

Am I considered an antique if I want it to have a USB port?
Chris M - 16 years ago
I won't be buying one because I have no use for a device that is between my laptop and iPhone. As far as AT&T goes, everyone will have their opinion, I have been with them since they were BellSouth, well before BellSouth was purchased by them, which is ultimately what happened and have never had a problem with them. I have friends and family with similar experiences, maybe it is because we are in Atlanta, a location with good coverage, but to each their own. I have Verizon for my work phone and often have no signal when in Helen or Dahlonega Georgia, but my iPhone has a few bars, so it's whatever. I think the killer for this product will be that it is not a necessity, where as a cell phone and an iPod were/are for me. Now if it ran Mac OS X, then maybe I'd consider it, but alas it does not. I think it is a wonderful product for those who need a device like a netbook just for internet and media, with the added bonus of thousands of apps. And come on let's face it, the apps are definitely useful and with soo many to choose from everyone is bound to find a few at the very least that they can use. I am disappointed that with a 1Ghz processor they still can not include flash support....
Chris Smith - 16 years ago
Sure, I'll buy one, but might wait another 60-90 days after it's introduced, hoping for a price reduction, maybe? The price is OK, but the $130 upcharge for the dishonor of getting AT&T is a bit much. I'd maybe go for the 64Gb model w/out 3G, then splurge on the 2nd generation version next year.
Orlando_Gal - 16 years ago
Unfortunatly the lack of multi-tasking and the AT&T requirement has killed it for me. Will wait for a second generation version. Apple, if you are reading this... VERIZON!!!
Joe - 16 years ago
It would be on top of my list if:
It had Skype capability
It had bluetooth capability and I could phone people
Was not tied to AT&T

That's really the deal killer. If not for ATT, then I would be buying upon release. It really shows the arrogance of Cupertino to think that the product is the be-all end-all, without regard to service. ATT is not available anywhere in my state! Come on guys, quit with the David-Goliath attitude thing. Verizon is bigger and just sux less than ATT. Too bad, this thing is going to blow up in their collective faces.

They stuck with AT&T which proves they learned nothing from the horrible customer experience with iPhone on that network. Deeply disappointing.
