I voted no on both. Mainly because the first was to blase and the second reminded me of the opening of the Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.
I do like the voice on the second, and if it hadn't been so similiar to that opening I probably would have read on. This is the line that did me in "you might as well stop reading now."
