Why do most Catholics actually go our of their way to get ashes on Ash Wednesday? (as compared to other required holy days)
It's one of the few days people feel they get to take something home from church (like palms on Palm Sunday or a throat blessing on the feast of St. Blaise)
It's a popular holiday that even non-Catholics talk about & practice. It's acceptable. (Joe Biden was sportin' his ashes in the news.)
They think it's a holy day of obligation.
They want to take Lent more seriously this year.
They were dragged to church by someone they love or want to be a good example for their kids.
They are regularly practicing Catholic (Mass every Sunday + holy days + do confession regularly + pray regularly + use their envelopes).
