When a science GlamorMag publishes a book review, I expect:
The reviewer is offering an assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, and larger significance of the book that is as objective as possible.
An opinionated reaction to the book's main arguments.
The reviewer has disclosed any information that might be expected to cloud objectivity (e.g., she is pals with the book's author, or the book is highly critical of her own work).
The book review editor has asked the reviewer to disclose potential conflicts of interest.
The book review editor has done her own legwork to identify potential conflicts of interest.
My expectations of book reviews are very low; I don't trust anyone else's opinion of a book.
My expectations of science GlamorMags are very low; I wouldn't trust their editorial judgment on much of anything.
