I am 67 years old and have just retired for the third and final time. I did not know how valuable my teachers' pension was until I retired, and have since encouraged my twins, which I had at age 42, to get into jobs with government pensions. As a single mother, I could not have possibly saved the million dollars that is needed to generate my indexed pension. As teachers, it may appear we do not have high salaries, but we sometimes forget that a signiificant portion is paid, by our employers, into our pension plan. For this security, I am truly thankful.
