This was the absolute last straw.

I initiated the process of leaving after news came out of Zuckerberg's early hacking -- I can deal with incompetence, misguidedness, and lack of forethought (or thought altogether), but I can't deal with an utter lack of ethics. I began removing personal information from the site, writing down contacts, and defriending people one by one.

Facebook makes it suspiciously difficult to do this and to remove personal data like wall posts. Curiously, Facebook would repeatedly get to a point where it said "no more posts," even though I could read these older posts in the Silverlight client, and then the problem would mysteriously clear up in a couple days. I tried, even installed a Macros program to speed up the process, but eventually gave up.

When I figured out (with help from a Sophite -- thanks!) that I could export my Facebook contacts to my Windows Live and Yahoo!, I did so and then permanently turned out the lights on my Facebook account by submitting my delete request.

For some reason Facebook then saw fit to send me 6 e-mails notifying me of this. Only two of these were justified -- I had submitted the request a second time after I realized I'd left myself logged into Facebook in another window and that might negate the request.

Serendipitously, however, the captcha during this password change was "tweets considered."

    My thoughts exactly.
