Definitely Greenville!!! We are growing tremendously and have so many options to choose from in colleges, restaurants, parks, shopping, and more. GREENVILLE, SC is where Google should choose for its Fiber :-)

    GOOGLE FOR GREENVILLE!!!

  • AF - 14 years ago

Greenville needs Google fiber optics! Greenville is an up and coming city and needs the latest technology to compete. The people here are wonderful, we have a beautiful downtown, gorgeous countryside, and we need fiber optics to help show the rest of the world the great things that go on here.

  • John - 14 years ago

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts owns it's own municipal light, cable, long distnace and internet service. We have the infastructure in place to provide point service to all of the final connections. Also a town of 33,000 people is a reasonable size service area for testing, yet still provides service to a large number of people.

We were one of the first Muni light departments, first Muni cable departments, first Muni internet services. We have always been cutting edge.

Thank you for considering our town.

  • Sharon Russell - 14 years ago

Up with Humboldt County! Although we aren't as big as some of those other places, we have a university, jr college, arts and just plain glory! Think about us, this is the area you need--the opportunity for all of us is limitless!

  • DP - 14 years ago

Greenville, SC - an hour from the mountains; 3-5 hours from the coast; not too big or too small, a lot to offer culturally and technologically. And, to top it off, the people are friendly!

  • greensborolovesgoogle - 14 years ago

Greensboro NC should have google fiber optics! Their are alot of college students who sometimes need fast internet, for homework. So many radio stations in the triad say google should come here, so why not make it happen! Kids also need fast internet to. What if they want to watch a cartoon video on youtube, wouldnt it take a long time to load without fast internet. Dont fall fo Asheville, their population is about 500,000 people. Greensboro has about 200,000 more than that! Greensboro is a TOP tourist spot for wet n wild and all the fun things to do here. Ashville has the builtmore estate which no one says is fun ( unlike Wet n Wildnd Celebration Station ). Greensboro deserves it because of everything i have mentioned. The ex-presedent ( Bush ) has visited Greensboro, and by my opinion i think he enjoyed this city! Many people love Greensboro for what it offers and is in the perfect position for none or non-violent natural disasters. Asheville has mud and land slides, freak blizzards, so I'm pretty sure google hi-speed internet will be down alot of the time. After all that I've said, I am now done. I hope that Greensboro gets picked for google fiber optics!

this site is BOGUS. i know for a FACT there have been many votes for Gainesville, fl, yet as of this moment it is only showing 1 count. LAME.

nobody from google will even look at your shady methods in polling. i suspect we all have been duped to bring you more hits for adsense!

  • Greg - 14 years ago

Asheville is funky and unique, and full of free thinkers... exactly why we would NOT make a suitable pilot for the program. We do not want Google's CIA-funded, uber-spyware, homeland insecurity, warrant-less exploitation in the guise of fast internet. Try it out on Greenville, SC... they decidedly represent the sheeple of Amerikkka better.

  • Dave - 14 years ago

There is a book called "The Heart of Change". If we analyze, we think, we change. If we see, we feel, we change is a more successful means to manage change. Greenville has Heart.

If you want to mange change: 1. Increase urgency. 2.Buld the guiding team. 3. Get the vision right. 4. Communicate for buy-in. 5. Empower action. 6.Create short term wins. 7. Don't let up. 8. Make change stick.

Lets keep this Google Fiber Challenge going for the change that Google Fiber can bring to an already great city and a successful win-win outcome.

Come and see why we feel like we do about the changes that are happening in Greenville, SC.

    GO GREENVILLE

  • Barbara - 14 years ago

Asheville is a very diverse small city with large and small businesses; varied educational opportunites; artistic and technical pursuits; both conservative and liberal philsophies; plus lots of individualism. Contacts with Google fiber will go many many directions which will spread knowledge of its usefulness.

  • Reed Clark - 14 years ago

Just think of us as Googleville, SC....:-)

Greenville and Google are a perfect match! Greenville has vision, motivation, and a very supportive community.
Greenville is a special community and the best choice for Google Fiber!

Klaus, you have much time on your hands dear, but that's ok if it works for you. Since you have so much time, do a search of the population of Greenvile and the surrounding counties and then visit www.wearefeelinglucky.com and then look and read the overwhelming positive posts and tremendous support from Greenville and I think maybe you will see why Greenville has such high votes. Or maybe you won't. Who knows, don't matter really. It's ok. We take the jealousy as flattery, so thanks.

Greenville, keep on keeping on. You ROCK!

    Go GREENVILLE!!!!!

  • oxleytr - 14 years ago

Honestly I am from Columbia, SC and have always loved it but the first time I visited Greenville's downtown I knew it was a special place! Go Greenville! Google for Greenville!

  • klaus - 14 years ago

I threw the tallies in excel hourly for anyone interested:

You've probably seen their headline: "Massive ‘Bogus Voting’ for Topeka, KS brings it down to Zero". (So, WHO set it back to zero?) The people behind this very site who set up the poll and have the account for it! They didn't reset their OWN automated (but slightly less massive) voting effort down to zero, just Topeka's. Here are some tallies for Friday April 9:

    Greenville: April 9 (Fri)
    --------------------------------
    April 9 - Noon 132,824 votes
    April 9 - 1pm 139,333
    April 9 - 2 pm 145,544
    April 9 - 3 pm 151,632
    April 9 - 4 pm 156,841
    April 9 - 5 pm 162,786
    April 9 - 6 pm 168,682

    April 9 - 12 am 205,360
    April 10- 1 am 217,164

    April 10 - 1pm 253,618

    April 10 - 10pm 254,874

    -------------------------------------------------

Anyone can see that voting rates this high are automated, especially for a town this small. This many votes per hour? Not!

    Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - Noon-1pm 6,509
    Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - 1pm-2pm 6,211
    Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - 2pm-3pm 6,088
    Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - 3pm-4pm 5,209
    Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - 4pm-5pm 5,945
    Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - 5pm-6pm 5,896
Greenville # of votes per hour April 9 - 12am-1am 11,804 (at midnight they doubled their effort when they saw Topeka racing ahead with approximately 15,000 votes per hour. Greenville couldn't keep up with that rate, so they zeroed Topeka.----OR, it's possible that they themselves can created that massive sudden explosion of votes for Topeka, so they could write a smear campaign against Topeka. Note Topeka's rates here:

    TOPEKA: (same dates and times)

    April 9 - Noon 2,690
    April 9 - 1pm 15,694
    April 9 - 2pm 31,610
    April 9 - 3pm 47,906
    April 9 - 4pm 63,787
    April 9 - 5pm 80,588
    April 9 - 6pm 95,905
    April 10- Midnight 689,692
    April 10 -1am 689,720
April 10 - 1pm 49 (they zeroed them) somewhere around noon to 1pm Saturday.
    April 10 - 10pm 101

    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 9 - 1pm 13,004
    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 9 - 2pm 15,916
    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 9 - 3pm 16,296
    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 9 - 4pm 15,881
    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 9 - 5pm 16,801
    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 9 - 6pm 15,317

    TOPEKA # of votes per hour April 10 - 1am 28

So, there you have it. Those are the facts. Anyone taking any time to enter this poll is wasting their time! It will be interesting to see if this post stays up any length of time. Good luck to all the cities, and may the best one (or one(s)) win.

  • Char - 14 years ago

Asheville would be the ideal place for Google Fiber. It is a growing diverse community with innovative ideas especially in technology within the school systems including colleges (A-B Tech, UNC-A, Western, Montreat, Warren Wilson and Mars-Hill). People here are mostly open to new ideas that will lend to Asheville's economic growth and stability in its tourism. My family loves Asheville and we're glad we made the move here! Asheville will welcome Google with open arms just like they welcomed us here.

  • Susan Allison-Diaz - 14 years ago

Greenville + Google = Love and money

  • Lisa - 14 years ago

Greenville! All the way. We'd love to have you here. We are a perfect match. You'll love us! :)

  • Steve - 14 years ago

I have lived all over the U.S. - North, South, East and West. I have never been anywhere like Greenville. It has a truely special culture of energy, innovation, and cooperation between the business, government, religious and education cummunities to advance the city/county. A true synergy. With a half dozen engineering firms here, it claims the highest per-capita density of engineers in the country.

  • GP - 14 years ago

I am voting for Greenville, even though people keep referring to BMW being in Greenville. It really is in Spartanburg County, where I live, 30 miles from Greenville. Also the GSP International Airport is also In Spartanburg County, which would be very good for Google

I really can not believe the verbiage the people in Memphis are using! You should be ashamed of yourself!

  • Debbie W - 14 years ago

Asheville is best city on the east coast! And Google already knows that someone has hacked in to the poll in Greenville, SC. It is impossible to have 100 votes every ten seconds..........................sorry your game is up.

  • Dave - 14 years ago

We have had a beautiful solar day here in Greenville, SC. I think it is raining in Mountainview, CA. All Y'all come back to Greenville and bring Google Fiber with you.

  • Iris Greene - 14 years ago

Greenvile and Google, have such a wonderful ring together. Greenville should get the best business draw for any company. My father is in comercial appraisal and he says Greenville is so close to taking off from the economic deppression right now. We are always growing and finding jobs for our citizens.

  • A geographer - 14 years ago

I think perhaps the voting results should be "normed" by the size of the local population when considering the poll "winners." For example, the Asheville MSA has a population 4 times larger than all of Humboldt County. The city of Greenville has a population 1.5x larger than all of Humboldt County. Even if everyone in the county who has access to technology voted daily, we'd have a hard time catching up to the other candidates in terms of number of votes cast.

I'm sure Asheville and Greenville are lovely communities and deserving places, but our geography really puts our region at a huge disadvantage. I hope Google will evaluate demonstrated "need" when selecting its pilot sites.

Humboldt County covers more than 4000 square miles of rugged, heavily forested land. Our closest urban center is 300 miles away. Aside from our scattered population clusters, internet connectivity is limited or nonexistent in most of the county -- those rural residents who can afford it must use satellite internet, which can be unreliable and cost-prohibitive. We also face frequent outages in our phone, utility, and internet services due to aging local infrastructure, seismic activity, falling redwoods, rugged topography, and heavy precipitation. Fiber optic networks would promote more reliable, affordable, and equitable service delivery.

We have pockets of very high poverty due to the transition, in recent decades, from a natural resource-based economy that provided high-paying jobs to a largely service-based economy that offers mostly seasonal, low-paying, and/or low-skilled jobs. The global economic recession means that even these opportunities are limited as local businesses shutter their doors. Young people cannot find part-time or summer work, so they not only lack a source of income/tuition, they will enter the job market with less work experience than their peers from other regions. The underground economy helps some of us pay the bills, sometimes leading to property damage, gang activity, petty crime, or violence in our neighborhoods.

Our largest local employer, Humboldt State University, is experiencing severe budget cuts that have forced salary reductions and layoffs while students' tuition has gone up by 40% in the past calendar year. Many of our students are the first in their families to receive a college education and rely upon Federal financial assistance. Anything that helps to narrow the digital divide and enhance local economic opportunities by making technology accessible to more residents and local businesses would be most welcome and appreciated.

Humboldt County provides food security and promotes small-scale and organic farming, shelters some of the rarest and most beautiful habitats on the planet, and preserves cultural and ecological sites of local, national, and international importance. We have a diversity of Native peoples and cultures that is unmatched within any other area of similar size. We have a lot to offer our state, region, and country so please help us to become better connected with all of you!

Thanks for considering Humboldt County! We could really use the assistance!

    Baton Rouge!!!!

  • Mary - 14 years ago

Google should pick ASHEVILLE. It has been noted to be among the smartest , most creative, most educated communites. Those three together means growth! Asheville is the best place to test Google fiber. We would test the limits in education, health care, government, small and large business growth and in creative arts. CHOOSE ASHEVILLE!

  • charles - 14 years ago

CHEATING!!! (Unless, of course, it's Ashville or Greenville doing it...then it's OK).
The folks running this poll are obviously members of the Church of the Sub Genieus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_SubGenius)

    Quoting the Rev. Bob Dobbs:
"I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

...and I think "Relax in the safety of your own delusions." probably applies here also.

  • Larry - 14 years ago

Greenville = Green Google. Asheville = smelly hippies

  • Asheville AllTheWay - 14 years ago

Asheville is continually producing new and innovate ideas. Google should pick Asheville because the cutting edge people here will take it further and show the rest of the world just how much can be done with Google Fiber.

  • Mike Rose - 14 years ago

Asheville is completely full of hippies. They dont need high-speed internet. Greenville is one of the fastest growing cities in the southeast and could do so much more with your fiber optics, instead of using it to buy tickets to music festivals and order bongs online.

  • Randy - 14 years ago

Greenville is voting the most. Greenville deserves it the most.

  • Michele - 14 years ago

There's no better place than Asheville. Seriously, I have moved around a LOT in my life and have settled here. Cannot even think of one reason to leave. The people are fantastically friendly, open-minded, accepting, creative, and gracious. We are also very appreciative and not apt to take good things for granted. ASHEVILLE is the place for google - I'm telling you, it's true!

  • JJ - 14 years ago

It's cause Greenville, who created the poll, noticed Topeka was winning, so they deleted their votes. now they re-set the poll to stop allowing inflation. They removed Topeka's lead, but left their own so they're the big lead again.

  • T - 14 years ago

Topeka was HUGE last night and now it's only got 45 votes? WTF? Deleted ?? WTF

  • Sarasote-Yoda - 14 years ago

About the comment above that FL is wrong and should be Fla. FLORIDA is FL, Not Fla, according to postal regulations. All states have two letter abbreviations.

  • Maureen - 14 years ago

Don't miss this opportunity! You gotta see it to believe it!

  • kevin - 14 years ago

Greenville's future is the best-Google please join us and see the excitement.

  • Bryan Sisler - 14 years ago

Welcome Home Google Fiber...Greenville is the Hub of the Golden Triangle, Charlotte to Atlanta. By having Google Fiber in the Center of The South East, the branch connections North East and North and South and South West are made much easier. It's a great place to live and work...That's why it's called Greenville. For our Neighbors in Ashville, no worries, we'll share as we always do... Greenville is the smart choice, Clemson University, Furman University, Bob Jones University, Greenville Technical College, Greenville Hospital System, Saint Francis Medical System, Michelin, BMW , Hubble Lighting, International Center of Automotive Research (ICAR), and much much more......All..... welcome Google Fiber...... HOME!!!!!!

  • Rick - 14 years ago

Greenville should be the city of choice for Google Fiber. This community is definitely interested and have gone the extra mile to prove to Google that this would be a great test market.

  • Atley - 14 years ago

hello?!?!? where did Topeka come from??? C'mon Greenville, get your act together

  • Tom Walls - 14 years ago

You need to fix the state abbreviations. Florida is Fla., not "FL." Check AP Style guide. Thanks.

  • kjw - 14 years ago

Asheville is Creative, Innovative, Outside the Box Thinkers, Imagination, Invention, Dreams, Vision and Inspiration; Google.... is Asheville!

  • Blotto - 14 years ago

BOTS are EASY - simple ass scripts can vote 20 times per minute per computer. There is NO doubt that's what's happened. Yet they tell you "vote only once per day" - yeah, right!!! Those who made this site knew this already and had their bots set up from the start.

  • Ashley - 14 years ago

I think that this poll has been hacked or someone has made some kind of bot. How can Topeka KS get over 600,000 votes in less then 8 hours?

  • charles - 14 years ago

    There are ways to cheat.

Do not believe everything you read on the internet (even polls!).

Kudos to Nonumus from Greenville for keeping the positive attitude!

  • Nonumus - 14 years ago

Did you know that you could vote as many times as you want by adjusting your browsing settings? Another comment said it was possible. I tried it for myself to see if that was correct, and its true. It let me put three votes in back to back.

At first I got mad, but then I thought this: you know what? Google wants to see whos got the enthusiam.

Ok fine, so there's ways to cheat this and the polls are probably NOT accurate, but darn it, I'm STILL going to show my enthusiam for GOOGLE.

I haven't lost that. WE haven't lost that. All I can say is words out, polls are corruptiable. But we can still show the enthusiam. Still vote. Send you videos. Twitter. FB. Comment. Do it all. WE will NOT be outdone. Simple as that

Did you know that you could vote as many times as you want by adjusting your browsing settings? Another comment said it was possible. I tried it for myself to see if that was correct, and its true. It let me put three votes in back to back.

Greenville is a growing city with strong community support. GO GREENVILLE, SC !!!

  • John - 14 years ago

To the person that said Greenville is just getting smaller: perhaps you should Google "Greenville, SC population trends." You'll see that that Greenville county's population has steadily grown since 1980 according to Google's public data chart. Also, have you visited Greenville, SC lately? If not, you may be surprised to find a completely revamped downtown that now includes the Falls Park, which has been nationally recognized for its beauty. The park, along with other transformations and growth in commerce, has absolutely placed Greenville on the map. I also suggest you take a trip down Woodruff Road just about anytime, but especially during rush hour, on weekends, or around holidays. Then I think you'll understand just how much you may be mistaken.

As Sean stated, the only other town from SC on the list is Hilton Head. I am very familiar with Hilton Head, and while I love it, I don't feel it's as deserving as Greenville. The population is significantly smaller (I believe around 40,000 to 45,000 full time residents), and the island already has a primary internet provider (Hargray) that has been in the area for years and is one of the biggest employers in the area. While I could continue to offer reasons why Greenville is a better option than Hilton Head, I will stop there, as my main point is that Greenville really is the better option, which is why so many people, especially from SC, are supporting it.

One more point I'd like to make is that Greenville's unemployment rate is the highest out of Hilton Head, Topeka, and Asheville (it's currently at 11.3%). There are many very good, very qualified potential employees here that are not working. Also, as other have stated, Greenville could really use a good high-speed broadband network. Charter is our main option up here, but if you were to ask just about anyone who has their service, I don't think you would hear good reviews.

I can honestly say that I can't think of a single reason why Greenville would not be a great choice for Google Fiber.

Greenville is just a pit stop on the Charlanta highway.

  • Brett - 14 years ago

It looks like folks in Greenville and now Topeka have discovered that if you turn off cookies in your web browser, you can vote as many times as you want. Oops! Maybe godaddy should try a scheme using IP addresses or something else to thwart the cheaters.

Greenville ALL THE WAY...But I have to tip my hat to Topeka! Ya'll are rockin the catch up! Way to go!!!

  • jsj1991 - 14 years ago

I AM talking about www.GoogleFiber.com, the PollDaddy site! :) The one where certain cities are running banks of computers with macros.

  • Manky - 14 years ago

Google should pick Pittsburgh. No special reason (aside from the obvious) but do bear in mind that Topeka KS, Asheville NC and Greenville SC all suck. Suck donkey omelets. This is a well-known fact, which is why the three cities together are often referred to as the "Axis of Lameoids who Think PollDaddy.com is the Official Google Fiber Website".

  • brennan - 14 years ago

It's not going to count!!!!! It won't matter what city wins!!!! If you go to GoogleFiber.com (where the real poll is), you'll see that it says at the top: The UNoffial Place For All Things GoogleFiber! Who knows, it could all be by Google, but I doubt it.

  • jsj1991 - 14 years ago

On April 9, check out that math!!! Topeka woke up and fired up their automation!!! Topeka has banks of unattended computers set up with macros doing a steady 4.4 votes per SECOND! Hot Dawg!!!! And Greenville is now trailing with only a little over 2 votes per second. Topeka is closing the gap! Way to go!!!! GO TOPEKA!!!!!!!!!!

It's Topeka all they way. Great community in the middle of the U.S. with small and large populations mixes. All four seasons, and a community, government, business and education community that is unified in wanting google to test their fiber Bandwidth here. We are a great community! It's our time!

Stop the B.S about 'you're insulting Google by saying they don't know how to code a poll'..well, look at the URL right now. It's polldaddy.

  • Henry - 14 years ago

Google should come to Greenville because Greenville loves Google and is a cool place to be.

  • Jo Ann - 14 years ago

    Go Greenville!
I’ve spent the last 20 years in Houston as a “rocket scientist” & before that was an EE professor in NJ. We just broke ground on our house in Greenville, SC, because, for us Greenville has it all. The outdoors, great weather, amazing downtown and all kinds of cultural events. Many posts have mentioned BMW, etc., but Greenville is attracting green tech companies like Proterra.

Please, bring GoogleFiber to Greenville so I can be a high tech telecommuter in a place I love. Greenville, you had me at “hello”

  • Tort - 14 years ago

Hahah, ah man, thanks 'your mom', I bet my friend 5 bucks not but last night that somebody would you use the cheating thing as a strength, ah, hah, made my day........

  • Tina - 14 years ago

I look and Topekia has surpassed Asheville. So sad Asheville. So Sad. JK

But then i look at Greenville, and its co contest. Well, i knew as much, but I just like saying it over and over anyway, ya know?

    Go Greenville!

  • Your Mom - 14 years ago

If it is not an official poll, why do all these Asheville freaks care if anyone cheats. Also, if Greenville is cheating, seems like they are smarter than the people from Asheville, or they would be doing it too. Google may want to choose the smarter people.

  • Tina - 14 years ago

    G.R.I.T.S

Google Relocating In The South. Greenville!!!!!

Right on Sean! I"ve lived in Greer for all 31 years of my life, and yes, Greenville is much as my home as Greer. Not to mention that Greer's businesses are promoting here as well. Many of us that live here in Greer (and other cities), work and play in Greenville.

Right on WIll! In addition to the 438,119 people in Greenville, there are 24,557 here and Greer, and yup, its true...I know most of them and they're all voting.

Right on KA! The overwhelming jealousy IS flattering. Well, can you blame them? If I lived anywhere else, well I"d be darn jealous too! And thank you, your dead on with that foul language! NONE of us Greenville folks have done that. It says a lot, huh? For those on here that are using vulgar language (cough cough Mephis), show a little class please. Come to Greenville if you need lessons.

God, can you feel the love Greenville people? Are you feeling lucky?!?! Someone earlier said that Asheville and Greenville would both be right for Google, but Greenville is right FOR GOOGLE. Well said, well said.

In addition to Greenville residents (438,119) and Greer residents (24,557), Taylors has 20,125, Anderson has 182,825, Spartanburg 280,738, Mauldin 21,784, Simpsonville 14,352, and I could do more, but it might be too shaming for others...but to US and Google, that is 982,500 bodies full of spirit and pride for Google. And a shame, some of them can't vote because of, yikes, poor internet service here. 'Nuff said

Oh, btw my peoples, pay attention to the cars that pass you by...look for "The Google" car ;)

Keep the jealousy coming people, its just giving us more pride and more spirit. Thank you thank you thank you

Do you get that people? 982,500 THOUSAND PEOPLE FULL OF SPIRIT AND PRIDE FOR GREENVILLE AND GOOGLE. And that's not all the cities voting. Its certainly over ONE MILLION. WOOOoooowwww.

    GREENVILLE ALL THE WAY!

WE GOT SPIRIT, YEAA YEAA, WE GOT SPIRIT, YEAA YEAA, WE GOT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT, WE GOT SPIRIT!
