Should the tea party movement support the Arizona immigration bill?

Our main issue is smaller government and less spending- I am sympathetic with Arizona's problem, but we should stick to our grass roots movement, and we can deal with the weeds later- say, after November 2010

  • Nancy Sims - 14 years ago

Let's face it the job of the government," number one" is securing our borders to protect its citizens. It is not and as a result we are being over run by illegals. No one has a problem with immigration, it just needs to be legal. Yes we need to be involved. There are all kinds of people waiting to get into this country legally, who respect our laws. they are not being treated fairly. When we allow these people to cross our borders with out consequence, it hurts all Americans. Wake -up America if you don't have enforced borders, you are not a country! Just try to get into Mexico illegally. The borders are there for a reason. I was born and raised in California I lived there most of my adult life. I ended up leaving because of the illegal problem. We need to stop disrespecting our own country.

  • conservadiva - 14 years ago

Hi Eric, I would rather see the Tea Party take up state's rights rather than illegal immigration specifically. YES, it is a cancer, and yes, common sense has left the building in Washington, but the real issue is whether a state has a right to govern itself. Here in NJ, our governor is courageously trying to balance our budget, and is also being undercut by the Federal Government. The FED wants to start a super fund for all public schools so that no teacher will have to loose their job, another entitlement. All NJ is asking is for teachers to forgo a 5% raise this year to fix the problem. NJ needs to live within its means, yet the FEDs wants to keep the people in our state dependent on them...Do states have rights anymore?! It is really discouraging to see liberals in other states criticize AZ and NJ for acting according to law. It is the law in NJ to have a balanced state budget. One caution, going after illegal immigration specifically will only give the LEFT more fuel to call the TEA PARTY racist. But then they will anyway, so its your call. But state's rights affect all 50 of us, not just AZ. Keep up the great work!

  • Terry P. - 14 years ago

I believe that our country is at a cross road if we dont address these issues then who will and as far as one comment about this not being a tax issue millions of our tax dollare are wasted on illegals here in the US, tThis must stop allso look at Mexico they want there dope to come into our country any way they can get it here and yes by even these illegals ,So that is why they dont like this law it will cost them. But it will save lives here in the US .We that were born here and others that came here the right way the legal way they have ever right to be here ,But would you have to understand murders dope dealers rapest etc come here everday they are just sent home no harm no foul give me a break our goverment officals work for you the American people so make your voices heard Thank you Terry P.

  • Jane Morris - 14 years ago

As strongly that I believe that illegal immigration is a huge/major problem, I think that adding this to the issues that the Tea Part supports would only weaken and fracture our focus. I agree with what someone else suggested - if we get the appropriate persons elected, the issue of illegal immigration will be taken up and dealt with then. I think we need to focus on smaller government, less spending, reducing the deficit and kicking out all the bums in Congress.

  • Judith MacNeill - 14 years ago

I do no think we should engage the illegal immigration problem at this time. We've state our concerns thus far. Free markets, limited government etc...
Taking on this issue now will surely brand us RACIST. Tread carefully.

Each of us has our own thoughts on subjects other than out of control government spending. Let AZ and TX and Southern California deal with this problem but with out silent support.

  • John Thacker - 14 years ago

I believe the state of Arizona was left with very few choices as the Federal Government has chosen to engage in a policy of the selective enforcement of laws. Clearly the Obama administration has chosen not to effectively enforce immigration laws despite the overwhelming desire of the population to see these laws enforced. The Bush administration didn't do much better. I think this issue is one the Tea Party should definitely be involved with.

  • Bob STRETCH - 14 years ago

I agree that illegal immigration is a vital issue to our national sovereignty. History proves that no nation survived long once it failed to protect it's borders. No nation. Period.

However, I think the main issues are faithfulness to the constitution and a proper view of states rights. Once these issues are tackled the rest should quickly fall into place.

We also have limited funds, resources, and time before the November midterm elections. We will need to be careful as to which issues we tackle right now.

  • Richard Pietrowski - 14 years ago

    Yes, Absolutely get involved,
If we don't do something about this who will need the T-Party. We have laws, which ones should we disregard? How about speech? or the right to bare arms? Or freedom of assembly? Either we learn to stand up for all this country has stood for all these years or we just sit down and ignore them all.
Speaking of laws, is it not a "Federal Crime to rob a bank"? Why does the government feel it is alright for the local law enforcement to arrest the robber and not and not a illegal ? Maybe the next time a bank is robbed the locals might just sit by the side and notify the Feds.We have to stand by any state or politician, or person who is standing for the constitution and our bill of rights. I wonder how many people would mind if someone "really nice" would break in your back yard? Is this not what illegals do when they enter our country?

  • Janice - 14 years ago

this is a tuff one, I am concerned about securing our borders, I support the gov.for her bold actions.
however, I believe we should stay focused on getting these people out of office, we can use this against
the current administration in showing further evidence of how incompetent obama is to lead this country.
We all know that this is their way of getting the Spanish votes. Maybe what we should do, since the GOP
doesn't seem to have the insight to engage, we should do it. by this I mean, lets make contact with Spanish
organizations, lets let them hear the truth about the Dem's, Obama and how they are being used by them
to further their own agenda. Lets enage them in to debates and try to make our case on why it is for their
benefit that we have secure borders and why intitlements are only meant to hold them back and make them
more dependent on the government. If the Dem's are successful in making the Spanish community think that
they are for them, they could very well win in Nov and 2012. We could call this our sneek attack.I would think
that the Dems would be expecting for the Tea Party to be out there making an issue of this, but what they
wouldn't be expecting is for the Tea Party to be extending a hand to the Spanish community to work with us
not only on our difference's but also for on the issues facing this country that are going to be harmful for all of
    us.

  • Crucis - 14 years ago

Yes, it is a pertinent issue and a federal one. But, first things first. Before we can start work on immigration, we must first gain control of congress---and keep it!

There are so many pieces of broken government to fix. Immigration is one item and should be high on list but there are higher ones. Healthcare and our financial systems for example. We're in danger of no longer having a country if our financial system collapses.

FOCUS NEEDS TO BE ON CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION...SEE BELOW
Constitutional Convention, This ends the Constitution, Obama's end game!!!!!!!!
The fact is, once 34 states petition Congress to convene a Constitutional Convention, the matter is completely out of the States’ hands. There is absolutely no ability to control what the delegates do in the convention. Attempting to instruct delegates to discuss only a specific issue like a balanced budget – or the whole package offered by the 10 Amendments for Freedom group—is absolutely impossible. Instead, once the convention starts, the delegates become super delegates which can take any action they desire concerning the Constitution. In short, at the convention the Constitution can be literally put on an operating table and the delegates can take a “scalpel” (pen) to it and change any section or even the entire document if they want.
    ******************************************************************
This in effect puts the whole constitution on the table to be scraped and rewritten. If he gets the 34 states, it does not mean every state will have a representative. They can have 13 from Calif and none form any other state. How did the get to this number. Last year Obama was pushing and only had 27.
THIS is what has been going on behind closed doors. If this occurs, you will have a whole new constitution.
    ******************************************************************
There is nothing else more dangerous than this. If they get the 34 states, it is over!!!!!!

The reason America has become a nation of endless entitlements, broke and little or no respect for our laws is because for years and years we have voted for people who do not represent or respect us or our Repuclic. We have to stay focused on quickly replacing these people at all levels, starting at the federal level. Unless we address the cause of the onslaught of illegials, we will not be effective. We must change Washington first if we expect ANYTHING else to improve. Changing direction down our first and most important home-stretch could be fatal to our much needed success in November. Changing our focus is what the progressives and liberals want us to do more than anything else. We CANNOT underestimate their ability to change public opinion. WE SUFFER THEIR SUCCESS EVERYDAY. Thay have organized for decades and are a well financed machine.
We must choose our battles wisely if we expect to win the war.

We should support AZ individually. There are many avenues to do this, and we all now realize that individuals coming together can make a huge difference. If anyone would like some of the websites regarding illegal immigration, I will be happy to share them. As far as the TP getting publically involved, I think it will be a huge mistake at all levels and will have a large impact on our ability to recruit others and be considered a force to be reckoned with like we are currently. Unfortunately, the left media will relentlessly portray the TP Movement in ways that are certain to change the minds of those that are unsure about what our real motives are and will absolutley add fuel to a fire that we have to control in November. We are finally being taken seriously by the media and ALL of Congress and Obama. We cannot lose focus now.

  • Paula - 14 years ago

I voted 'not sure,' but that is only because I believe we need to stay focused on spending and growth of government. But there is an interest here for Tea Party as well, to the extent that this is a conversation a bout State's rights, and the fact that our personal liberties in America are granted to us as citizens--not everyone globally who happens to come here illegally.

  • ChrisK - 14 years ago

We need to stay focused! Dump Harry reid and win back the House + hopefully the Senate.

IMO if TP supports AZ immigration bill big time it will be VERY easy for the left to demonize us and weaken our appeal.

Keep the eyes on the PRIZE.

  • Janet - 14 years ago

I have already written to Gov. Brewer in support of her courage to take the bull by the horns.
I do not believe that McCain truly supports this new law. It is a "Do I win the upcoming election" if I support the Az's.
Obama never ceases to amaze me. He has racially divided this country more in one year and set us back 50 years. How is one get raised in a home with socialistic teachings and not have it influence his daily adult life? Better yet, how does one sit in a church for 20 years and NOT hear what the preacher's views are?
I won't be able to get to the Polls fast enough in 2010 and 2012!

  • toros - 14 years ago

The Tea Party rails against govt waste and the Taxed Enough Already attitude prevails. One of the largest drains on our resources is the funding of illegal immigrant's needs with the tax dollar. They are unseperable. Now Steinberg, the leader of the CA senate, wants to cut all business ties with AZ. These people are drunk with power, and have no thoughts whatsoever that have a basis or foundation in reality.

  • Joe - 14 years ago

I believe the Tea Party Movement is about the constitution. Part of that belief is States rights. Besides, The Feds will not enforce their own laws and that is what got us in this mess.

  • Bob - 14 years ago

Why should the Tea Party movement engage in illegal immigration? Because the Federal government would love to grant amnesty and add another 20 million voters to their power base. Quite clearly this is in the Obama/Dem playbook, and we must prevent it. Open borders, the desire of Democrats, would enmesh the Dems in power for decades, and America would be transformed for the worse.

  • Richard Ross - 14 years ago

Let's just Remember November. Our focus should be to get the word out, as the media is only a propaganda machine. Please, let us NOT get mired down in issues that would only serve to dilute the cause. Vote the bums out, and things can get more Constitutional again!!

  • Esther Ziol - 14 years ago

    Educate, educate, educate!

  • Constance Ellis - 14 years ago

There only in the southern states for now. I'm a single mother who works very hard to support my children. Trying to teach them the right things. The more money I make the more the government takes, which takes away from my children that were born in the united states, as myself and my father before me and his father before him. We can't support illegal immigrants. Let their country take care of them, and If they won't maybe they should protest their government. I work hard to support my children, I pay my bills, I pay my taxes, Shame Shame Shame on our out of control Government taking out of the mouths of my children, for their bleeding heart liberal ways. It's my money that I work for. I think we should pay taxes, for roads, schools, etc. Not all the other bull.

  • Thom - 14 years ago

Illegal immigration affects the entire nation, more acutely in border states, but all the states nonetheless. It is not sufficient to only support the idea of smaller federal government, but also the proper application/direction of that government. In my opinion, our current administration has COMMITTED many offenses and is growing governement too much, but their OMMISSION on this issue is a woeful negligence. We SHOULD support any attempt to protect our nation's sovereignty. We need to steer this ship in the right direction in whatever way we can.

  • Bobbie - 14 years ago

We stand united on all issues of sovereignty. The original Tea Partiers, as well as the rest of the original 13, came to the rescue of Boston and all of Massachusetts when the British bottled up Boston Harbor in punishment for the Tea Party. Food, money, moral support and PRAYERS were sent to all who suffered from an insensitive, over-bearing, bellicose "government" bent on bringing a proud people to its knees. Same thing going on today. Support Arizona.

  • Ed Johnston - 14 years ago

This is a big issue for Arizona (Illegal immigration) I like that we're making a difference in the political arena, but feel we might be taking on a bit too much with illegals. I'll pray our tea party leaders make wise decisions. God bless Ed

  • ChrisM - 14 years ago

I support Arizona and I agree with everything Eric posted concerning how the Federal government is overstepping its boundaries. I also believe that sharp, tough action needs to be taken against illeagal immigration and that the states should continue with similar legislative action. But I'm afraid that the TeaParty movement being involved with this issue so close to November may hasten our progress. This is a very important issue but I don't think it is one that needs this movement's immediate attention especially with all that is at stake in the upcoming months. I wouldn't want to gamble the future of this country over involvement with a issue that can wait a few more months (the states are already taking action, our involvement would simply be additional support and not us initiating anything.)

  • John Didiziaan - 14 years ago

I support ntea parrty,so i feel i have the right to speak,if Mexico is so tough on legal and illegal, why is it that tthese carrtells, drrug lords are so mighty in there product, and why haven't the mexician leaders have military remove these drug lords a long time ago, there is a due process in citizenship in america, and other countries must comply with that, and if the corruption wasn't so strong in Mexico, manty people wouldn't be running over here, but
there is so much illegal acts in leaderrship in columbia,Mexico,Brazil, all along those border countries, that their fleeing over,WHY,cause there is a Democary heree of law and orde, and americians are paying for aall this upset
we need to be reinburst, and in fact these protestors should not be carring on in their violence attitude of this
decission on immigration protection for Arizonia and americians, this has to stop, and getting on our liver in america, amen

  • Eric - 14 years ago

The main issue here is a Federal Government that is too big and too powerful and attempting to get bigger and more powerful. This case is just another example of what is quickly growing into a state of dictatorship. It should be used as such - evidence to state the case that our Federal Government needs serious pruning. But if the movement decides this needs resources then what's to say it shouldn't dedicate resources to all of the other issues that are yet more examples of a government out of control.

Solve the root cause and the rest will fall into place. The elections are coming up and if the government is fixed this and many other issues will follow. If the government isn't fixed and you focus on this, the real problem will never be addressed.

  • TDR - 14 years ago

While I am completely in favor of the new law and day after day observe the media providing 90% coverage for the viewpoint of at most 30% of the State's population, I voted Absolutely Not on Tea Party getting involved. When are conservatives going to figure out that the others and the media will do anything to undermine proper political causes. If Tea Party wants to back Jefferson and make it a states rights issue that's one thing but to become directly involved in the topic will only fuel the growing negative propoganda being thrown at the Tea party. This in turn will divert attention from the real issues that the Tea Parety is getting traction on. Succeed there and the rest (like our immigration law) will fall in line. Dilute your message and nothing will fall in line.

  • Pat Fields - 14 years ago

The Immigration subject HAS to be engaged, but not at the expense of Candidate support activities. Re-populating the Parties with Constitutionally fervent, conservative office holders is THE FUNDAMENTAL task that will be indispensible to correcting a HOST of ills ... immigration policy only one among them.

  • Mark - 14 years ago

Stick to low tax, small govt. , strong defense and personal liberty. These are winners. The tea party cannot and should not be all things to all people. I agree with the earlier comment to stay away from social issues if possible.

  • Donna - 14 years ago

I should proof read before submit:

    Immigration became invasion when......

And they intend to claim land and resources......

  • Donna - 14 years ago

YES!!! How could we not? The opposition will always try the race card because that is all they have hoping to see
us cave in unfounded guilt and fear.

YES! This is our issue. Our way of life, our laws, our economy, our safety, our health, our educational system,
    everything, comes under our movement.

OUR constitutional rights, states rights, and what should protect us from invasion from a foreign country is under
    our "flag" so to speak.

Illegal immigration ceased to be immigration when that group, who had the audacity to protest in the streets and
demand that OUR laws not be enforced, fly their flags with OUR flags upside down (which they probably didnt
know that an upside down flag signaled "distress" and that would apply to US), state the intent to take land,
recourse and change culture and language.

What about that would exclude our movement from this issue!

All of it should demonstrate that this IS our issue!!!!!

Join with ALIPAC in this issue and any other group that grows our numbers to staggering levels.

  • JMW - 14 years ago

I have no problem with the law, but don't think the tea party should get involved in this. Stick with the goal of constitutionally limited smaller government and we will continue to build majority support.

  • Marvin - 14 years ago

Illegal Immigration is Illegal people…it’s a LAW…what do you NOT understand about it? You speed, you get a ticket…You kill someone, you go to jail…It’s the LAW…

  • Mary Lou Benakovich - 14 years ago

I agree wholeheartedly with Eric's opinion. While I agree with the decision made by the governor of Arizona and I support all means of exposing those here illegally, it is definitely a federal matter and the states should be allowed to govern themselves. What is it about the Constitution and "separate but equal" do the nae-sayers not understand. We seem to be at a boiling point in this country thanks to the Tea Party Movement. We all need to stay focused and defeat the leftists in November.....including the worst offender in 2012.

  • DeDe - 14 years ago

    Eric Odom,
This is the FIRST thing you have done right, LOL... Thank-you so much for your courage! Everyone needs to forward this poll to EVERY Patriot they know.

I had to attend a Tax Day Tea Party in a town other than my home town in Texas this year because signs displaying "social issues" were not allowed. Amnesty is NOT a social issue. Thankfully both Dallas and Houston took a different stand. My sign was simple:
Amnesty = Liberal Victory in November Stand Up!!!

This sign would have been taken from me in my hometown and replaced with a pre-made "approved" sign per the organizers of that event... go figure. In both Dallas and Houston several speakers addressed the issue of Amnesty head-on. It is being call a social issue by Tea Party organizers across the Nation because of a lack of courage and commitment to saving this great County and the AMERICAN CULTURE. It isn't just about $$$ anymore! Amnesty is a game changer for all future elections in this Country.

"YOU" MUST STAND ERIC and lead the way on this issue. It will likely be the most important thing you do in in the fight for ALL upcoming elections. You must expose the fact that other Tea Party ORGANIZERS stand with Dick Armey and the open border crowd. It is my guess from reading blogs and comments that this opinion is NOT representative of a majority Tea Party Patriots.

I am very proud of you for polling the members, something I have been leaving comments about all over the net for about 3 months. After contacting some organized Tea Party groups, I knew we would have a problem when this issue was in front of us.

My complaint is that Organizers have been controlling the message, donated $$$, and the all important membership list that enables us to rally around a cause. My point to Organizers has been, "they are ready we are not, Amnesty is a game changer", and MEMBERS not Organizers are the "heart and soul of the Tea Party movement" and MEMBERS have a right to make this decision.

Again, thank-you Eric for your courage and leadership.

ILLEGAL IS NOT A RACE... IT'S A CRIME!

  • Nugie - 14 years ago

This is a very important issue but diverting funds away from the primary goal which is to get people elected to the Congress or Senate is more important. Immigration is going to be an issue in the next election and if we really want change we should focus on the easy way to achieve it by getting the proper people elected in November. This administration is very good at getting their opposition distracted so they can achieve their goals while no one is looking. Lets not take our eye off of the ball as immigration can be best dealt with through legislation when we have the right people in office.

  • Kathy Reis - 14 years ago

Think about this............we wouldn't be in the position we are today if the Federal Government had done it's job in the first place!!!!! It is their job to keep the citizens of this country safe! That's a fact! Another fact is that if the state of Arizona doesn't deal with this now THE SITUATION WILL GET WORSE! Every border state should do this, IF NOT EVERY STATE IN OUR COUNTRY!! Hats off to my fellow Americans. One last comment, only people who have something to hide take this as an invasion of privacy or profiling. If they have nothing to hide then they have nothing to fear. If they don't like it they can always go back to where they came from for a better way of life.

  • Lori Gibson - 14 years ago

Its an outrage that this Obama administration is openly defying Arizona state efforts to deal with COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT TRAFFIC ! He refuses to send troops to secure the border or take any decisive action to protect the lives of Arizona citizens ; this arrogant president has nerve to even threaten to sue Arizona state for being forced to take action !!!! CORRUPT OBAMA not take action because ALL HE CARES ABOUT IS GETTING THE HISPANIC VOTES IN NOVEMEBER!!!!!!!

  • Sharon Sutton - 14 years ago

ALSO........speaking about TAXES....WHY do you think they are going to TAX us more? Because all the people including the illegals in this Country are Paying NOTHING! They have to come after US the everyday average
    Taxpaying Citizen!...

TEA PARTY BETTER GET ON BOARD BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!..They are going to BEAT us because we are too
AFRAID to enforce our OWN LAWS ! Unbelievable! This is a NO BRAINER!

  • JOP - 14 years ago

I believe the key word here is "illegal" There are Federal laws in place to address this issue, but the Federal Gov't refuses to enforce them. Now the states are going to protect their own borders, because the Federal Gov't isn't taking care of one of their main responsibilities and the problems derived from this have become overwhelming. They leave the states no choice..........pathetic. It is time for people educate themselves and stop showing such ignorance and sitting back and waiting for someone to take care of these issues for them. It is our country and the "public servants" we have elected to represent us are our responsibility to assure they are doing their job. If they aren't, fire them

  • Joy - 14 years ago

Yes, this needs to be an issue we take on. I keep asking myself why would the dems support a group of people breaking the law!!?? Answer: They need the illegal votes!

  • John A - 14 years ago

  • Merrill - 14 years ago

It is my understanding that the Tea Party is about getting back to the Constitution. Primarily started because of the gross over-stepping of it's Constitutional authority by the Congress in the area of national debt and taxation. That does not mean that we should ignore other areas where the government is NOT following the Constitutional guidelines on which this country is based. Arizona has every right to pass legislation that effects it's own sovereignty. This bill DOES NOT allow for indescriminate stops of people to check their legal status. If any are going to take sides or comment on this Arizona bill, I suggest that rather than trusting the "media" to tell you what is in it, you read it for yourself then decide how you feel. It is our naive trust of the "media" to tell us the truth that has allowed us to get into this mess our country is in to begin with. Wake up people! It is up to us to set the record straight, not go along with the agenda of the Progressive Elite as presented to us daily by the "media". This does NOT have to be a divisive situation. It is rather ANOTHER example of our "government" doing and NOT doing what it was designed to do. If we stick to the Constitutional litmus test for any "fight" we choose to pursue, we will continue to be true to the principles that created this wonderful grassroots movement known as the TEA PARTY.

  • wayne haskett - 14 years ago

i think we should enforce our laws ,and those trhat are convicted should be sent to border camps and serve their sentence as brick masons building the bigest most secure wall we can. and when their time is served they can walk back home!! ADIOS AMIGO!!

  • Jo-Ann M - 14 years ago

To Amy B. -- Illegal immigration IS a financial issue. One third of all illegals are recieving government assistance. Many also receive the earned income credit on taxes. That means that not only do they not pay tax, they get goverment funds. If these law breakers are legalized and made citizens, they can then bring their parents and grandparents here and they will automatically be out on Social Security. And what of the states? States have gone broke in part due to providing free education to children of illegals. In some towns, new schools have gone up to accomodate the new students. When the parents migrate out, we have under used schools. The state budgets are cutting back on education ...for the children of citizens..in order to provide for those here illegally. Illegal immigration is NOT a social issue! Did you know that one third of all prisoners in this country are here illegally? Did you know that it cost the federal government and the state government about $50k per year per prisoner? I certainly think that the issue of illegal immigration is in keeping with the philosophy of the TeaParty.

  • Sharon Sutton - 14 years ago

I CANT BELIEVE THIS ISN'T ONE OF THE 10 MAIN OBJECTS ON OUR 'CONTRACT FOR AMERICA'!? We aren't going to make this one of OUR issues when we are fighting against an administration that is going to make it theirs and use the ILLEGAL votes AGAINST US!? Does anyone have any Common Sense around here?

WE HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE LAW AND SHOW OUR DRIVERS LICENSE's for even a SEAT BELT CHECK! YES I'M TYPING IN CAPS BECAUSE I AM REALLY MAD! IF ITS OK FOR THEM TO BREAK OUR LAWS THEN ITS OK FOR ME TO BREAK THEM TOO...and I am a 57 year old GRANDMOTHER OF 4 GRANDCHILDREN!!

MAKING IT LEGAL TO BREAK EVEN ONE LAW = LAWLESSNESS=ANARACHY ! AND IT IS COMING IF WE DON'T PROTECT OUR BORDERS AND OUR PEOPLE!!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Do not get off message - Federal Government Tax and Spend - Taxed Enough Already.

This will only dilute your efforts and get you to stray where you do not belong fighting a state's rights issue.

  • Jon - 14 years ago

I think that if the Tea Party doesn't take a firm stand on this...and other issues pertinent to the Constitution, we soon shall be a part of the Russian professor's prophecy from 10 years ago. Check that out and then see where we stand. We can either bury our head in the sand, say it doesn't pertain to us, that there are more pressing issues, that it is a social issue and we need to leave those alone, etc.and soon find the phrase "UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL" coming to fruition. The party should be about rights for LEGAL, U.S. citizens. Stand proud with Arizona. Whatever state we are in, we need to stand united on these or...again..we will fall. We are rapidly headed downward as is. Remember the greatest empire of all? The Roman Empire with its powerful army, vast wealth, great culture? Well, I imagine they had their Barack Obama that led them to their demise!!!! Ignoring these issues and not standing with our fellow states...is a sure recipe for DOOM!

  • John - 14 years ago

Absolute support is what we must provide to Arizona. This isn't about illegal immigration, really and truly, it's about states rights...much like the arguements leading up to the infamous barrage of Fort Sumter. If we as a nation don't band together to support one another and our inherent rights to create, enact, and enforce laws not SPECIFICALLY given over to the Federal, then we WILL lose them...one by one.
I don't know about y'all, but I don't ever want to hear the battle cry of "Remember Arizona!"
Remember THE Arizona...the battleship, not the state, is just fine with me.
Besides, like so many others state...patience will only get you so far, and indeed, who IS barack obama to state what is a just law and what is not a just law? He need to but the heck out of business that does NOT concern him. Go back to bowing lessons or something along those lines, sir, it's more to your suited to your abilities....

If we went to a fair tax which taxed everyone on all purchases of goods and services within this country, and stopped all entitlements such as tax credits, wouldn't that eliminate the economic drain on our country by illegals? They would be paying taxes just like everyone else. I, therefore, think that instead of focusing on stopping illegal immigration, we should focus on getting the income tax thrown out and getting the fair tax instituted instead, as a means of paying for all these people. Then, we should push for having English be our national language. And, we should amend the Constitution so that a person does not become a citizen of this country just by being born on American soil. They have to either be naturalized or born to American parents. But, I feel that our focus right now should be to get the right people elected. We need to preserve our precious resources for that fight right now, and not become too fractured with other causes. We can then lobby those conservatives we get elected to enact laws or amend the Constitution to make it less desireable to come to this country illegally, and to forcibly secure our borders.

  • Abe - 14 years ago

How about we dedicate the limited and resources we have to tackling the bigger issue of an out of control government first. I mean that's going to be challenging enough as it is. The rest should take care of its self once
people have control of their government.

We should be involved with this issue especially when the feds are over exceeding their constitutional boundaries by strong arming the States.. If we don't fight the feds at all levels that we might as well not fight at all.... So i say continue the good fight and we will meet the Feds on all Battle Fronts....

  • Ihor Nakonecznyj - 14 years ago

FOCUS! While this is a problem, we have an issue that needs our total focus. I agree with Bill Olinger.
Lets not try to boil the ocean.

  • KingsKnight1 - 14 years ago

I voted "absolutly not" on the AZ bill specifically. We SHOULD get involved in immigration enforcement insofaras it applies to the federal government. It is a federal gov't responsibility. This admnistration is taking on healthcare, CO2 regulation, buying and insurance car companies. We should insistist it perform its constitutional mandates and stay out of the issues not constitutionally assigned to it.

  • Lisa Samperi - 14 years ago

I don't believe that by the Tea Parties getting involved with the immigration issue that it will split our focus. On the contrary, what the Obama Administration and the Progressives would like to do is avoid blocking the illegals from entering the country so when they try to ram amenesty down our throats, they'll have acquired a bigger voting block! This speaks to the heart of the election process. We have to stem the tide of overflowing illegals if we truly want to curtail government spending. The illegal population represents one of the biggest drains on our economy and threat to our way of life, and to ignore this would run contrary for what we are standing up for --- smaller government, lower taxes, individual liberty. Our liberty is threatened by the do-nothing attitude of the Federal Government. I applaud Arizona for their guts in drawing the line in the sand. Remember, this is about ILLEGAL immigrants, not legal immigrants.

  • Hans - 14 years ago

In my openion, the tea party movement is a civil rights issue! Americans vs. an over bearing federal government /marxist cult! The white house already has a un documented worker in it, and he wants all the anti american suport he can get. WE must support AZ.

  • Beverly Truex - 14 years ago

I now live in Oklahoma and the Illegal population is increasing every day.. We live in a small community and it is being invaded by illegals. We have lots of problems with drunk driving, no license and other things. If it is not controlled, they will be in control.

As a hispanic American I am dismayed so many think the so-called latin/hispanic vote is monolithic. The media and the Left would have us believe supporting AZ's laws equals losing this vote. I disagree. I daresay most Americans of hispanic heritage support legal immigration and oppose illegal immigration and are as concerned as the next American of the consequences of illegal immigration. As to AZ's law, I would not hesitate to travel to AZ for a minute. The law is clearly written so that only when there is a reasonble suspicion, authorites will ask for citizenship status. I live in a border county in Texas. If you want to travel to any point north of a 60 mile line you MUST stop and declare your citizenship to the Border Patrol. This has been going on since at least the mid 70's.Your average American living in Muncie may not know this. I have therefore answered the question: "Are you an American Citizen?" literaly hundreds of times in my life without ever feeling offened! I have even been asked "Where are you going and what are you going to do there?" Agents routinely examine the contents of your car (mine has many times) and can ask to look inside your trunk (I have been asked and complied). Let me say this, I AM GLAD the BP is doing this. Let me add further, returning home, cameras are set up to the right and left of US 281 at varying heights and angles to accomadate everything from tractor-trailer rigs to motorcycles. The camera flash as you go by, taking a photo (I assume of the driver and plate)...this started about five years ago..so I ask where is the outcry to the citizenship question and the photography? My point is the Left and Obama don't care a whit about the so-called "civil rights" of illegals, if so they would shut down the Federal Border Checkpoints. They are simply trollling for votes and have a complacent media trying to helping them con the American Public.

  • Jon Gardner - 14 years ago

Yes, we should be involved, because we are already involved with the same issues that come to play in this Arizona situation -- wasteful government spending (on illegal aliens), too high taxes (because the laws already on the books are not enforced by a corrupt, politically- and power-incented federal government), defense of the Constitution (defending states rights vs an overreaching socialist federal government, and the federal government is supposed to do what the constitution says it should do), our basic Constitutional freedoms (from special classes of people who can break the law and get away with it), etc. etc.

  • George Yeagley - 14 years ago

This issue is a part of everything we are fighting for...and if they get amnesty passed before long they will out vote us at the ballot box...I don't understand WHY someone would come from Mexico and vote to establish the same type of government...but thats what they are deoing...

  • Rick Korbel - 14 years ago

I would like to see the Tea Party groups meet so we can get to know eachother. Then have a recrutement for the Tea Party. Everyone brings a new person to the group.

I have heard from outside activists "the Tea Party has people but they are not organized to accomplish anything".

  • Edward - 14 years ago

Lots of great comments. I agree, I don't want the Tea Party movement to lose its focus.
The Tea Party Movement is about changing the leadership and policy at the federal level. We need to stay focused. Individual members can get involved in whatever other issues they are passionate about...but it's never going to end until we get the current policy-makers fired and re-set policy at a federal level.

I agree with Mr. Olinger. Lets not spread ourselves too thin. Keep on doing what we are doing and that is concentrating on elections. As Mr. Olinger suggested, these issues will be taken care of if we elect the right people to office. I think we all want immigration reform of some kind, but our borders must be protected first. Stick to the elections, to me that is our most critical issue right now. The economy, jobs, taxes. Get people elected who will bring these conditions to order. If we pull away now and concentrate on this one issue...we are lost.

  • Kathi Childers - 14 years ago

How can we not involve ourselves in Arizona's right to pass this law? They are one of our 50 states, as is each and every one of them. Unfortunately for them, they are much, much to close to the border which makes it far too easy for the illegals to sneak in, especially when the Feds are doing nothing to prevent it. Legal Arizona citzens' economy and very livelihood is being dangerously threatened due to their resources being leached away by Mexicans who boldly move in and demand anything they can get for free with no conscience and the No-Conscience Feds backing them up! These folks need and deserve our support. If we don't back them up, who will??

Illegal immigration is a HUGE part of what we are attempting to do- - -take back our country by our votes! Elected represenatives and those running need to understand that our eyes are open, we are watching, and they better take a stance on all the issues. If elected or re-elected they need to know that we will be watching them-CLOSELY.

  • Charles H - 14 years ago

I think the Tea Party should only concern itself with economic issues. Yes, we are mostly conservatives who agree on a variety of topics regarding Big Government, but I say let other groups deal with other issues. The Boston Tea Party was about taxation without representation, so THIS Tea Party should stay on that same course, dealing with similar matters. Pick your battles. The economy is enough to handle. I agree with the earlier comment about getting spread too thin.

  • Ina Lynn Jurey - 14 years ago

I'm addressing spending ALLOWED by the Fed: Here's some shocking facts on illegals & immigrants in the event you have missed them from FAIR!
    1. 71% increase in uninsured (including US born children) between '89-07.
    2. 1 out of 4 uninsured residents is an immigrant.
    3. 32% (14.5 million immigrants) of uninsured without health insurance (including US born children).
    4. 27% of uninsured population are foreign born.
    5. 48% of immigrants (incl. children) are either uninsured or depend on Medicaid.
    6. 65% (approx.) of illegals in U.S. are uninsured.
    7. 66%, in some hospitals, of total operating costs are for uncompensated care of illegals.
    8. 10% of 425,000 births a year in U.S. is to an illegal mom.
    9. $10.5 billion est. is total of annual non-reimbursed medical expenses for illegals of which the Fed is SUPPOSED TO SHARE IN THE COSTS.
    10. And to cap it off, here's the ultimate shocker: Mexico sends its ambulances with their critically ill across border to U.S. hospitals for free treatment! Why are border agents allowing this????
So, these statistics affect not only the border states but those further inland where the illegals have appeared. Now, they are fleeing further inland due to AZ's new law; Utah is considering the same law due to influx of illegals.
I wonder what each state's share of all these expenses are??? Anyone have a clue out there, especially the border states? I will research to see if there are statistics available; however, you should also in the event I fail to find out from my sites and submit your findings.

  • Bruce Keesey - 14 years ago

Please don't get off track. We've been successful the last year because the Tea Party has remained focused on federal issues. I think it would be a terrible mistake to step into the immigration issue, especially now just before the fall elections. Keep it simple. Stay focused on the election.

  • Paulette Reynolds - 14 years ago

It depends on what the goals and objectives of the Tea Party Patriots stand for. Why would the TTP want to get tangled up in yet another Republican talking point?

Big Business profits from the Mexican workers coming over the border by knowingly shipping them over, hiring them, and then laughing all the way to the bank when the INS makes a sweep for publicity. It's a revolving door for cheap labor for the farms and sweatshops of America. If the TTP requires Big Business to pony up and take responsibility for their end, then I'm for it.

As an Independent, I'd like to see the TTP get more involved in demanding an end to OUTSOURCING OF AMERCIAN JOBS (emphasis, not shouting). This is the main reason for the high unemployment rate and one issue that the Dems and Republicans consistently ignore, because they both receive sweetheart deals from the countries and foreign/domestic business concerns.

By bringing the jobs back from overseas the rate of unemployment would drop, American manufacturing could recover, and we could then proudly see labels on our products that read, "Made in the USA", instead of "Made in China".

    People of the United States:

We have established immigration laws, they were good enough for our forefathers, and they should be good enough for today. If they entered the country illegal, then send them home, and bill the cost to the country which they came from. This will create revenue, and then they can lower taxes.
Control by Obama and his buddies, this is an organized system on their part to finish breaking the United States of America, and put our great nation back under the control and rule of Europe.
A person of this nation better vote out every representative which is in office at this is time, and all the senators up for re-election, vote them out of office.
Than impeach Obama and all of his fellow cohorts.

    GBTN "God bless this nation"

  • joe - 14 years ago

Of course it is our issue.

Most of the states charge taxes, our concern is high taxes, lack of jobs and affordability.

The Arizona issue is 'ILLEGAL IMMMIGRATION not people who came here legally.

  • Bholt625 - 14 years ago

It's about time someone (Arizona ) had the balls to do what is neccessary. The Government on Immigration has acted as normal. They have failed in Immigration, there are millions of Illrgals and their solution is to give them amnasty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every State should take Immigration in it's own hands, it would end our Illegal Immigration problem. Illegal Immigration will never be solved with the Federal Government being in charge.

The Mexicans have figured out the plain and simple truth of our stupidity in our immigration laws. No state law enforcement officer can arrest them for being here Illegally, that can only be done by a Federal Immigration officer.

Like everything else, the Government and the polititions have had forever to do the right thing and have failed miserably again. God Bless the Govenor and leaders of Arizona.

  • JackieD - 14 years ago

I think the biggest concern about the bill is that anyone could be stopped and asked to show proof of citizenship for no reason. So the civil rights of CITIZENS are being threatened. In a state like Arizona, whose original CITIZENS were of Latino descent, anyone and everyone could be stopped for no reason and asked to show proof of citizenship. Imagine the lawsuits that could occur. While I applaud Arizona for taking action when the Feds won't... I do understand where the concern comes from. It's like having the state knock on your door for no reason and ask you to prove you have a license for your firearm. Wouldn't everyone be shouting about civil rights then?

  • tom - 14 years ago

I believe we need to support the STATES right to govern its self

  • Steve Beren - 14 years ago

Good message, Eric - I will vote in your poll. I certainly am strongly in agreement with the actions of Governor Brewer. Generally speaking, I have no problem with Tea Party activists and Tea Party organizations getting involved in this issue, as you have in your message.

Of course, issues like abortion, immigration, and foreign policy may be somewhat controversial and difficult for some Tea Party groups, where unity might be made more difficult for some groups to the extent that such issues are brought in to the mix.

However, I think there can be room for disagreement on specific solutions to the immigration issue, but unity within the Tea Party movement regarding the right of individual states to protect themselves against illegal immigration, and regarding the responsibility of the federal government to protect the borders.

Beyond that, there is room in the Tea Party movement for individuals to have varying opinions about various solutions to illegal immigration. I am pretty hardline on this issue - see http://www.steveberen.com/immigration.html - and I know that there are others in the Tea Party movement who might disagree with me on specifics.

But as long as the emphasis is as outlined in your message - emphasizing the proper role of the federal government, and emphasizing that only legal citizens have the rights of citizenship - I think this issue should be engaged, and that it can be done without harming the unity of the Tea Party movement.

  • katablog.com - 14 years ago

ASOLUTELY NOT !!!! We are having to deflect charges of racist and race baiting . I see, so we let them win with their lies. Perhaps we should drop anything against Barack Huessein Obama and any other non-white congress person so that we can prove we aren't racists?

Sorry what people say about me doesn't matter as long as their negative claims are not true. I do not hate or even dislike Mexicans. I merely believe that each and every person who enters this country should do so in a legal, orderly way. Aren't you being "racists" against those who do stand in line when you turn your head on those that didn't?

  • Sue Christensen - 14 years ago

The Tea Party is about taxes.

How they are levied and how they are spent. Just taxes.

What ever falls under "taxes" is fair game for the Tea Party.

We may need to hold off until after elections but if Arizona had enough votes and chose to pass this bill, they must have the support of their citizens? I am so shocked that Arizona did this but so happy.

  • cwr - 14 years ago

Is it not strange that a bill that is simply a reflection of the federal law is being attacked with such fury? I think not. There are many good things that are coming out of this little snit, but chief among them is smoking these corrupt serpents out of their rocks and sewers. They have to come out on record BEFORE November. hehehehe.
This is a very big fight with many facets. This is just one. PRESS ON!
How is it that on the one hand they rag on America as being so rotten, and on the other they do anything to bring people here. The plan here of course is to get as many new democrat voters by November as possible so as to make it impossible to ever stop the evil they are daily cramming down our throat. Anything we can do to delay their putrid agenda until November is a very good thing.

  • Wendy L. - 14 years ago

I agree with what Arizona has done. They have tried to get support from the government and they just ignored, and or didn't get any response. So the last straw was when there friend was murdered by an illegal. It has gotten out of hand, there not getting any help so what where they supposed to do? It's pathetic that Obama isn't supporting this, but it's not surprising either. In my opinion he is just trying to make us into another Russia or France. He hates people being rich, he hates whites, he hates everything about America, the "man" hasn't and won't pick a church to go to. That is a horrifiying right there, he isn't a God fearing person. If our founding father's could see the America that is now, they would be at a loss for words, we have a way too big government and little by little they are MAKING us do what they want us to do. Not any more! I have had it and I think a lot of other people have too! We are going to make a stand and change our future for the better! The first step was Brown taking office, now Arizona is putting their foot down. Enough is ENOUGH, we can and will use our own brain and make our own decisions. Get ready for September cause they are all going down! It's going to be Republicans, Independents, and Libertarians thats going to fill the seats! Our voices WILL be heard!

  • Nancy Michael - 14 years ago

Lets all remember one thing...the issue about the immiagration reforms being discussed by Washington is all about VOTES. They see these people as millions of more votes to keep them in power and their corrupt agendas going regardless of what it's doing to the country we all love and call home. They don't care one whit about what illegals are doing to our cities, states or this country. So...this does have to do with what the Tea Parties are all about---our liberties and freedoms that are being stripped from us, the LEGAL citizens of this country. I too am all for anyone who wants to come to this country to better themselves, but, I want them to come here legally and do it the right way. Not sneak in the back (unguarded) door, take all the "free" services they can from hard working taxpayers all the while sending their paychecks back home. We (the taxpayers), and the states we live in, can't sustain this before it's all going to collapse around us. Thankfully, AZ understands this and, after asking/begging for assitance from Washington in vane, has taken a stand to protect the people of their state...and their country and we should applaud them and support them as much as we can.

  • CARY - 14 years ago

This is the #1 issue that permeates most all economic trouble in this country. Illegal immigration's use of taxpayer funds is what has caused the erosion of our tax base and the ability of limited government to adequately care for the proper public programs. We do not need any more programs, just necessary ones for our CITIZENS.

  • Dawn - 14 years ago

Eric, you have said it yourself in that post: "... in my opinion, the tea party movement is about the federal government, not the state. In fact, we encourage and applaud states for stepping up and governing themselves, and we ask that the federal government get out of the way."

States have always been meant to retain their sovereignty. What you call "stepping up and governing themselves," some of us call sovereignty and the 10th Amendment. States were only meant to loan a little power to the federal government via the powers enumerated to it in the Constitution.

While the Tea Party is "about the federal government," it should therefore be about returning the federal government to its proper place. Enumerated powers, 10th Amendment, these are issues that necessarily become a part of what we're all about!

  • katablog.com - 14 years ago

The TEAParty movement is about government's wanton spending. What could be more wanton than allowing those who are illegally in our nation to consume our resources?

Tell me what Barry thinks it's an horrific to have foreigners prove they are legally here but has no problem with forcing every US citizen to account to him about their medical insurance! Which is more invasive? Which is actually of the US Government required by the Constitution?

Yes, a State enforcing a federal law is the state's business.

  • Sue Christensen - 14 years ago

The Latino community pay taxes and perhaps they are more than happy to move their illegal alien relatives out to government programs. They will not however, be so inclined to support them if the government freebies dry up.

It is our tax money has is supporting these people.

  • Mary Daly - 14 years ago

Illegal immigration is a major problem in this country that the Federal Government refuses to address properly, and I therefore believe that the Governor of Arizona had every right to protect her state. The borders MUST be secured, not only on the South (which is the worst) but North, East, and West. As far as being tagged as racists, well --- our opponents have already called us every name in the book including that, so we just have to stand up to it! We usually know within our own consciences what is the right thing to do to save our country.

I'm having a Surrealistic Dream. The basement and attic of My Home have been invaded by Uninvited Visitors. My Basement is housing drug-runners and thieves; My Attic accomodates the wretched refuse of My Teeming Shore. These Inhabitants were not invited in to My Home, but rather, My Government decided to allow them use My House without My permission; and My Government tells me it's illegal to HIRE them but its illegal NOT to give them a place to live, albeit without the means to pay for housing now that My Government's Program of Free Mortgages has been abated. I'm being told by My Government that I must feed, clothe and RESPECT THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS of these NON_CITIZENS living in MY HOUSE !!! While I keep My Mortgage up-to-date, My Government demands more TAX of ME, tells me I am a RACIST, and from IT'S Closed Doors demands of me MORE TRANSPARENCY and " FAIRNESS ". My UNINVITED CO-HABITORS revolt at MY (!!!!) UNGRACIOUSNESS and ILLEGAL behavior. I try to contact my Senators to complain of my Plight, but am told that they are not taking calls, and are ignoring the calls that they DO take. I go to Vote at My Local Polling Place and find myself in a line WITH My Illegal Inhabitants (who were automatically registered to vote when given their free Drivers Licenses upon their arrival at MY HOUSE), and I discover that NOW I AM THE MINORITY (with NO rights). My Constitutiion has been voted to be CHANGED.....................................Fortunately, I awake from My Surrealistic Nightmare..................................................Unfortunately, I realize that the nightmare is now REALITY................................ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEY WERE YELLING "RACIST" . Everyone knows we want our borders sealed . We are so close to the July 20/th primaries . DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOU ABOUT THE TIMING OF ARIZONA'S LAW ????? It IS TOO CLOSE TO THE PRIMARY . BACK OFF !!!

  • Sue Christensen - 14 years ago

The posters are right that we need to focus our energy on removing the deadbeats from office. After November we can take on the wasteful spending issues.

BTW, thank you for being so respectful of others opinions. We may not agree but we can work towards a common goal.

And yes, we will be branded as racist but then raging, flaming liberals call us all sorts of names anyway.

We are about TAX MONEY no matter how it is spent.

  • Shane Muse - 14 years ago

I think most of us are in agreement when it comes to supporting Arizona on this issue. It is an issue that really stirs up the emotions and frustrations we have all been feeling. With more than 70% of Tea Partiers voting to get involved, I still think we should focus our attention on the Federal governments actions, not the state of Arizona. I think the Federal government is overstepping its bounds in this case. I feel we need to stick to opposing the Federal Governments actions in this case. As an individual I will strongly support Arizona and I will urge my legislators to secure our borders. But as a Tea Partier I simply oppose big government getting bigger and trying to bully the individual states. BTW, I voted "Probably Not".
