Over the past 40 years, I've had many friends in same sex relationships, some of whom have children. Their children have few opportunities to see their lives represented in children's books. And children of opposite sex parents have few opportunities to see how children in other kinds of families live--very much the same as they do! I'm a Unitarian Universalist, and a member of a welcoming congregation. One of my volunteer tasks is to purchase books for the libraries; we would be grateful for great books with same sex parents, great books with adoptive parents, and great books with the diverse kinds of families that everyone sees in their neighborhoods, schools, and communities.
