Apple, just redesign the motherboard, put the antennas on the bottom of the phone or split them up top and bottom. This will leave the sides free for gripping. Tweaking the software is only a fools game in this case as it's obviously a hardware issue.

Either that or we'll just go get a Motorolla phone.

I have been a long time Apple fan. I have iMac's, Mackbook's and iPhones, Apple screwed up and did not do their homework on this but it happens from time to time and they should man-up and fix the problem instead of trying to pass it off as a software error. Apple knows they screwed up and they are trying to do damage control now and hope it all blows over with a rubber band fix and a software update which I believe is a smoke screen. Will I switch from Apple?, probably not because they make a damn good product and to me at least that is important. If someone from Apple reads this, just fix your blunder and move on to making great products and stop spending so much time trying to sugar coat this.

Meh. Everyone should get an Android powered phone. Apple obviously ain't so great.

Wow, for apple to try and bring other phones down with it, that's pretty low. I don't think people would care as much if apple didn't spend the last few months with their chests puffed up saying their phone is the greatest thing ever. When you boast, you are setting yourself up for a ****storm when things go sideways.

    Posted from my death-gripped blackberry.

Why should anyone need a $30 case to make a $200 phone work the way its supposed to. Thats like buying a car and being told it will only run correctly if you have the right windshield wipers on it.

  • dylan - 16 years ago

Dan B- key example of an apple apologist. Apple makes the best products? Validate this claim for me.

I think apple by far makes the best laptops and desktops. But please explain to me how the following apple products, that are actually pretty poorly made and designed, are the best compared to their counterparts:

    Time capsule
    Apple tv
    Iwork
    Iphoto
    Airport routers
    Previous generation of bluetooth mouses
    Mobileme

    I could go on

  • dylan - 16 years ago

I registered just to comment. Listen to you lemmings! Unbelieveable. Some phones have this issues, but to think all phones have decreased reception when you hold it is plain stupid. They provide 3 examples, in a totally biased setting, and because apple says so, you believe it!

Sure, every phone has design flaws, but the fact that you guys are ok with a flaw that affects the main function of the phone is insanity.

Plus, why would you want the iphone after seeing the evo or droid, or even what will come out in the next few months, why go with the lower spec iphone? Someone explain how the specs of the iphone 4 even compare with the evo.

  • Dan B - 16 years ago

From my perspective, the antenna issue doesn't change the fact that the phone exceeds my expectations in many ways.  The quality, speed and features satisfy my needs.  The iPhone is highly integrated in my life.  Signal issues only impact a small percentage of the entire experience.

I am tired of the FUD and Apple bashing.  It would be nice if we could move on but I feel that the powers that be ( 1. Companies that compete with Apple, 2. Tech press that make ad $ on clicks...conflict & FUD = page views, followers & listeners) will milk this until next year when a new phone comes out.

Apple, keep doing what you are doing.  You did make a mistake with the antenna but I am ok with that.  You make the best products for me and I will continue to be a customer.  You look out for my interests more than any other company.

    Thanks Apple.

  • hazekamp - 16 years ago

Listen to you people. You have your head so far up Steve job's add you'd need Verizon to make a phone call. This is completely unacceptable from an engineering standpoint. If it were any other company, you would all be demanding new phones. A free case... are u kidding me?

  • aesc - 16 years ago

    Apple sells defective phones.
If the phone is defective the price should be lower.
If they give away the $1 bumper to cover the flaw and you agree with it, you bought an overprized defective product and don't want to face the truth.
If Apple is the half of what they say they represent they should have recall all the phones at once.
Now is it ok for Apple to sell defective products and get away with it just because they are Apple ?

  • Christopher Tilley - 16 years ago

The phone has a design flaw. The free bumper will resolve the issue but the phone still has a design flaw.

Will this impact sales, no. Does it tarnish Apple's reputation for building superior products, yes.

Did Apple handle this well, no. Will people start seeing through the Apple hype machine, maybe.

Will I buy an iPhone4, no.

  • nas - 16 years ago

lol comparing Nokia phones with iPhone, if that's your bar then of course you're happy with a free case.

  • Jacob - 16 years ago

Apple and Steve Jobs are arrogant and condescending. All phones do this, not as bad as this one though. When speaking of dropped calls he left out details and numbers that paint a true picture. Don't get me wrong, I love the phone, but if there's an issue deal with it, acknowledge, and find a fix. Don't state you wish more bumpers were sold b/c there wouldn't be so many complaints, especially when you're whole thing is how things look cosmetically. If looks weren't as important than common antenna knowledge says placing an antenna against another metal object will effect it.
    Again,... Arrogant and condescending.

  • Jeff Ballweg - 16 years ago

it's an issue only because we hold such high standards for apple products. Sure, the antenna thing is a real issue, albeit with a reasonableand cheap workaround. The EVO has a ridiculously short battery life, but hey, you can get a spare battery or an extra charge such is the case with many devices - a recall isn't really in order, but feel free to be disappointed that your purchase isn't as great as it looked on paper.

  • Brian - 16 years ago

The phone is broken. Apple just doesn't want to admit it. None of the other phones on the market have as much of a problem with attenuation as the iphone 4. period. If they did, then this wouldn't have blown up as much as it has. Face it, Apple has built their business on you spend more money for a quality product and when the product doesn't have that quality it will and has bit them in the ass. Tough..you want to play at the top of the heap, you invite all the extra scrutiny. Basically all apple has done is give you a free case. So that instead of saying "Don't hold it this way", they just say, put it in this case so we don't have to worry about you holding it the wrong way.

  • darthtiggger - 16 years ago

I love the way Apple fan boys give Steve Jobs a free ride on everything. The phone is defective. Repair it. Also love the options on this survey. Most disfavorable option is to fix it. No option that Apple blew it. Keep drinking that kool-aid Kevin.

  • Kevin Stephenson - 16 years ago

Its a phone...If it drops phone calls it is broken and does not deserve customers trowing money at them. All phones can drop some, but I have had phones with no bars keep a call working. This thing drops calls with bars. It can't handle degraded signal.

    Switching to Droid X

  • yomama - 16 years ago

Also, the older iphones dropped calls like crazy and Apple blamed AT&T. Now that the iphone4 "fixed" this problem are they admitting it was the phone and not AT&T?

  • yomama - 16 years ago

Apples marketing aims at putting down everyone else; pointing out their imperfections while touting that their products are "magical" despite various product defects. They also like to keep this type of information on the down low by excluding consumers from commenting or reviewing online store products, unlike everyone else.

I'm pretty sure the phone is useable, but just like the rest of its products it's nowhere near "magical" or whatever spin Jobs puts on it. It's a phone, its main function should be making phone calls. Where's the app for that?

  • Dee - 16 years ago

I Agree that the "device" os a great portable computer with great apps, camera, etc... but it obviously doesn't function well as a "Phone". Hopefully apple can make it function well in that department, but a combination of a better antenna, software and spreading the phone across various carries. The problem is the android has become a very equitable match with better call quality and on better networks.

  • David - 16 years ago

3 options didn't seem like enough. I would have liked:

D: I love the phone already PLUS a free case? Wow. You guys rock.

  • QUICK FIX - 16 years ago

    Quick Fix: BUY AN ANDROID

  • Pronoun - 16 years ago

If you are unhappy with the phone return it. They are waving the restocking fee, so you can get any of the other phones that have no reception issues. It won't cost you anything, so stop complaining.

I waited to see how it was before I upgraded and just didn't buy one.

Oh yeah, Apple you didn't handle this that great, 22 days of silence.

  • Tom - 16 years ago

Apple sells products that are heavily based on style and the design aspects. The iPhone 4 was a break from the original design, but the requirement to enclose it with a case to make it function destroys that design. I don't think Apple should advertise how thin this phone is now because it isn't a phone without it's thicker case. They should fix the phone and give the customers the awesome phone they thought they were buying.

If the phone is great with all it's features (minus a cell signal) then isn't it just an iPod touch? You could saved the money on the monthly bill.

  • yhhh - 16 years ago

    The phone is BROKEN

  • kumasan1969 - 16 years ago

I can't believe that people are now stupid enough to make this an issue. iPhone 4 is a radio. Who would complain if it was a FM radio and reception goes doqn by touching the stupid antenna!!!

  • Rick - 16 years ago

I love the phone but the problem seems worse and easier to trigger than the Windows Mobile, Blackberry, and earlier iPhones. I had to buy a MicroCell to make it work in my house but the 3GS and Blackberry were fine.

  • Dave - 16 years ago

Love Apple, but I think its a band-aid solution. Come September you know there will be a iPhone4b with a clear coating around the antenna to fix this problem. I probably suggest if you dont like using a bumper or case you return your iPhone and wait a couple more months for the revised one. Who knows, maybe Steve and his engineers were using a prototype, and thats why they didnt use bumpers. Also, just food for thought, we all thought Gray Powell prototype phone was disguised by that bumper, maybe he was testing the bumper more than the phone

  • Capito - 16 years ago

Seriously? Apple didn't have a trouble *not* including this error before, and suddenly all of the fan boys are okay with it now?

Not to mention that this *isn't* a problem on all phones (very slight signal loss is much different than what happens on many iPhones).

    What the hell?!?

  • Kevin Flahaut - 16 years ago

I totally agree with Carl.. this iPhone is a magnificent piece of work. I've had absolutely no issues with it and this has been totally blown out of proportion. I couldn't reproduce the issue, but got a nice case purely for protection so it's really a non-issue either way.

The only downside is that AT&T still sucks, but that's not the phone's fault. If Apple decided to throw people a bone by giving away a case, then go for it if you feel you need to. Personally, even if I didn't have a case I wouldn't get the free one because I don't want to be a part of the herd of whiners.

  • Geoff - 16 years ago

    Missing another choice:

I was going to by an iPhone, now I'm not.

Hello Droid X, my name is Geoff - I hear your network doesn't suck...

  • Joe - 16 years ago

While Apple is correct that some signal loss exists on all phones. Ones where you can touch the antenna like I had in the 80s and again with the iPhone 4 in 2010 the impact is 20X larger. The fact is they are not admitting it was a mistake to allow people to touch the antenna and everyone knows it is. I am sure the case fixes the issue but c'mon admit it is a design issue and it impacts more then 0.5% of users.

After the press conference consumer reports said it is still not recommending the phone. For any other manufacture of a device having consumer reports say DO NOT BUY would KILL the product. And any other company would admit it is an issue and fix it.

  • Steve Jobs - 16 years ago

    Seriously? "All phones do this"???

  • AlnAndr - 16 years ago

You all need to stop choking your phones, no matter if it's an iPhone 4, an HTC EVO 4G, or a Jitterbug. They do need to breathe you know.

  • mike - 16 years ago

I just want the proximity sensor issue fixed.. I'm tired of putting people on mute or FACETIME during a call .... ugh

  • Al Bsharah - 16 years ago

Used to work in the auto-industry doing RF (Radio Frequency) work for Jeep/Chrysler. The reality is, RF is a fickle technology. So many things can influence signal quality and it's not a tangible object that you can easily observe.

I'm not surprised at all that Apple found other phones (including the 3G and 3GS, not just other manufacturers) to perform almost identically when held a certain way. It's the nature of RF.

Those of us that used to get radio (or even TV) via an antenna know this. *laughs* Walking by the TV and/or radio could sometimes cause it to get better or worse, depending. Touching the "rabbit ear" antenna on your TV could make it worse or better. This isn't much different, other than we've evolved a bit since then.

Despite there being no issue beyond what any other phone has, Apple chose to "make their customers happy" by offering a solution. Kudos to them for superior customer service in an age where customer service is in many cases non-existant.

    Cheers,
    AL

  • JimK - 16 years ago

Funny, if all phones do this, why can't I replicate the problem on my Droid? Subset of question A: why do Apple products make reasonably tech-savvy people into idiot apologists who make claims like "All phones do this?"

  • Kevin - 16 years ago

The iPhone isn't broken. Jobs has got to be kidding! The phone is flawed.

  • Mike - 16 years ago

While it may be true that all phones do this, being able to simply touch the black separator area and "bridge the gap" between the two pieces of steel--which attenuates the signal to nearly nothing--means that there's a serious flaw in the design. It's one thing to attenuate the signal down to nothing if you cup the entire phone in your hand--most phones antennas are housed inside the phone anyway. That's easy, and it makes sense that if you cover up the antenna, you'll get some signal attenuation. It's quite another thing, however, to be able to attenuate signal strength, or simply kill the signal all together, with just a well-placed fingertip.

Software fix or hardware recall, something has to be done about this. I'm not sure free bumpers are enough, since some people (like me) don't want to use a bumper on a device that looks this sexy. We just want the essence of the device. And we want it to work.

What Apple is doing is the right thing, but it is by no means a "fix." I'd call it a "workaround" at best. It's not good enough, and Apple knows this.

  • Djdiddles - 16 years ago

I don't care about the stupid #'s steve jobs puts up. It's just a smoke screen and they aren't even going to address the real issue of "THE PHONE IS BROKEN". Wooo hooo you can return your phone and then what? ATT has some of the crappiest phones of any provider except t-mobile. The Iphone is the only thing that is worth staying on that network.

All phones have antenna problems my ass. If I death grip my Evo, I might loose a bar, If i place my finger on the iphone, i loose a call... hmmm... lets think for a second. Apples to Oranges anybody.

The phone is broken and Apple is just screwing the customer and ppl shouldn't stand for it.

  • emm - 16 years ago

Its a phone first, everything else is secondary.
The phone has a fault, end of story..

  • Jeff - 16 years ago

After watching today's press conference, I am shocked that this is even news. It's a phone...when you choke it the reception drops...and?

  • Corey - 16 years ago

If they knew about the issue, that is irritating. I find it hard to believe a phone can be in development for several years, and nobody knew about it. If they knew about it, they shouldn't have released it and should refund any and all phones that were purchased.

Having said that, if it is something they never noticed (which I find hard to believe), I feel that a free case is sufficient.

  • CheezWiz - 16 years ago

Humm... I have tried very hard and I am unable to find a place on my Touch Pro and Incredible that I can touch and cause the signal to drop to zero.. I think I could even stick them up may ass while on a call and still not drop a BT call...

  • Marc Chapman - 16 years ago

You forgot an option. "Can this just please go away? I don't want to hear about it anymore. This is an issue between those who bought the phone, and those who sold them the phone. The rest of us don't care."

  • Alex M. (Viper007Bond) - 16 years ago

I agree with Carl. The antenna issue sucks, but it doesn't ruin the phone.

  • WARisPEACE - 16 years ago

Building a phone with a weak spot at all is a fundamental flaw. I want my phone to be invincible!

  • AlnAndr - 16 years ago

Everyone SHOULD be voting "A free case is good enough, all phones do this" because it's common sense that all phones lose signal at their weak spots. They aren't perfect. I'm glad Apple even stood up to admit it and even compare it with other phones. Not like Nokia who claims with exaggeration that their phones are perfect.

  • Carl Hancock - 16 years ago

All I know is I own an iPhone 4 and the pros far outweigh the cons for me. Antenna issue aside, the device is fantastic. Consumer Reports even says so if you look at the non-antenna related rankings.
