    The backstory is a killer, an anchor pulling the story right to the bottom. Eliminate paragraphs 2 and 3, at least push them back 10 or 20 pages.

    You gave away too much. by filling in the backstory, you left up swith no tension, no questions. Teh details of why he's guiding the U-Boat should be spread over several chapters.
