If machines can be made sentient enough to think for themselves to the degree that they could conceive to deceive a human, should they not be granted rights as intelligent, rational beings? It would be good to explain to them why WE try not to lie, but I think it should ultimately be their decision as free agents to decide. And as free agents, they should be subject to the same laws that govern human conduct.
I have written on this topic in the past. The big issue will come when computers will be able to tell if we (humans) are lying to them. This is something that is already possible with different methods. Once computers/robots can lie to us and we can't lie to them without detection will be the biggest problem.
