Just adding my vote to the N900. The Samsung/Android is a fine choice for someone just looking for an iPhone-type toy. But the N900 offers so much more as a "Smart"phone.

Love the SGS because:
* It is powerful
* It runs Android.
* The device is sleek and sexy
* Andrioid can be installed from the Community build also.
* The phone is not fuckin' locked like the Motorola Droid.
I cannot see anything missing in it that I should be expecting.

And fyi n900 is far more nicer to tinker with and screen is just fine too. This funny looking phone does it all. I hope the next gen communicator is similar but even so I won't be changing for some time. :)
i have used both of them , samsung is good going. but i detect that it's all features r for entertainment only. now a days it is necessary to have both entertaining and helpfull device. on this segment lots of people of our city who r using sam galaxy and tested n900 also, now repenting why they did not buy n900. so my vote is always for nokia n900.

Maemo os is revolutionary and the tablet form factor with keyboard is 99% perfect. I almost bought the galaxy s.. but that was before I checked out n900. I went for n900. It´s more multifaceted and programmable. N900 wins hands down!

The Nokia N900 is special, with its imminently modifiable operating system and the ability to just run Debian packages, but the Galaxy S is just an ordinary Android phone whose claim to fame is that it's very thin and has bluetooth (so does N900).

I have both, and have been using them intensively for months.
1) N900 running Android (hypothetical) vs Galaxy S
I call it a tie. Galaxy S has some better hardware (most notably the display) it is still lacking in other areas (mainly poor gps, poor WIFI/3G auto switch, no flash, no keyboard, mono speakers, no FM transmiter)
2) N900 vs Galaxy S running maemo (hypothetical)
Tie, same reasons.
3) N900 vs Galaxy S
I wish the N900 had better navigation software, better/bigger display, and faster CPU. But androy is making the Galaxy S a nice toy, while maemo is making the N900 an extraordinary communication tool and portable computer.
So in the end the biggest difference is the platform and some key software, and as a whole the N900 kicks the shit out of the Galaxy S.

My N900 is clocked at 1.15GHz, runs a SSH server, web server and SMB server. Oh, it also boots ito Android (FroYo) and runs full Linix programs in Debian. The Galaxy S is a great phone, but it's no N900.
