Mono no mo'? Is it only about that? Why do so few people post any critical thoughts about the applications themselves. Both have an active community around them, Rhythmbox being pushed by its default status over 14 releases of Ubuntu. I do see the stability issues in Banshee in the past, but they are fading away, as long as you are not using Community Extensions which can be dangerous. On the other hand, bugs get fixed so quickly and in such great numbers, using and supporting Banshee can bring so much benefit and ultimately lead to a complete well performing Media Player. And that's what it will be and do well: be a Media Player.
Two years ago I chose Banshee over Ubuntu, as I have seen others do, for me because of performance on a slower machine, believe it or not. If the developers are active Rhythmbox has all chances to fight back and regain it's position.

Ubuntu should provide users an easier way to get this mono cancer.
Whats going on with MONO!! Is mono dangerous,????
If(ans=yes) then
why ubuntu includes it by default. As its one of the BEST distro it should be safe.
else
why people hate it. If the community find it as a bad thing, join hands to bring it down.
The above is my humble opinion as i love linux, and i wish to see Ubuntu 100% Free.
Banshee tries to be too much, video, extensive podcasting, etceteras, while Rhythmbox fits better in the Unix way: do one thing, and do that good. Instead of trying to do many things, all not perfect. Totem an RB are perfect at what they do. Simple, focused and dedicated.

@mlms The reason why people are so anti-Mono is because of two things: the fact that C# is patented, which means that all C# implementations (even the FSF's DotGNU, which is why it's not longer actively developed) are unsafe, and this is only increased by the fact that Microsoft's so-called promise doesn't cover some parts of C#, including what some of Banshee uses. The second reason is that Mono is a glutton, and even that is enough to deter lots of users. Now, you might be saying "But William, it doesn't matter on a good bit of computers in the market today!" Here's the thing: one of these players is going to be the default, and since Banshee uses Mono, it takes ages to start up on slow computers, and even more to actually use the damn thing. On the contrary, Rythmbox is smooth even on old computers. And judging by the comments:
* A good bit of people (specifally 11) don't want Banshee because of Mono.
* Some people are sugesting other media players to be as the default (I've seen Audacious, Deadbeef, Clementine, and something called Guayadeque. Myself, I'd like to see Rhythmbox or VLC as the default.)
* Two people don't use Banshee because of other reasons (dog-slow, stability issues)
* And only two people use Banshee (one because of poor video support in Rhythmbox, which can be fixed easily, and you, mlms.)
In conclusion, a lot of people want to see Rhythmbox as the default instead of Banshee (it's neck and neck right now), and the majority of the people who support Banshee are just Mono apologists.

i would choose Clementine! ;-)
it's much faster has better options and playlist stays the same until i clear it!
i prefer using deadbeef
In this age of Unity interface it is highly important that media player's UI too don't waste space.

It's not about liking Mono or not rather performance issues: on my (maybe slightly outdated) multimedia pc Rhythmbox runs smoothly while using Banshee is just a pain. It takes several seconds to skip songs, slow start up, slow search. So, I vote for Rhythmbox.

The anti-Mono sentiment here is staggering. I'm worrying that no one actually knows what they're talking about. @Mumbles, how is Mono a money-making opportunity for developers? The source code for both Mono and Banshee is released under the MIT X11 license, which is extremely permissive, even compared with other free software licenses, so I'm not sure how this goes against the "FLOSS ethos." @David Medina: fwiw, Mono will is already shipped on the Ubuntu CD, and will be for as long as Tomboy and GBrainy are around, so no major size impact there. @Arash: Banshee is a GTK+ app, and it uses the native theme -- not sure how it doesn't "look native at all" in your opinion.

F@#k Banshee and mono which is only promoted by developers who see it as a money making opportunity
with little regard for the FLOSS ethos.
Neither Banshee nor Rhythmbox.
I always try to make friends with these programs. Currently I use Guayadeque.

My experience is that when Banshee crashes and it is down and there is nothing you can do to revive it .... Rhythmbox isn't as attractive and hasn't the cool or features, but it rarely crashes. Stability is key for me, but I have Banshee as my second music player/manager.

The Rhythmbox is not beautiful. but it doe not use MONO!
and its is important to don't use it....
Mono? no thanks!
David Medina - 13 years ago
I dont have anithing agains mono, but without mono in the default install other stuff can be included in the disc image, or it can be simply smaller. besides, i think that Rythmbox is ok anyway, and you can always install banshe if thats whats you prefer.

Banshee's advantages:
1. Lot's and lot's of extensions.
Banshee's disadvantages:
1. Uses mono.
2. Needs minor tweaking and bug fixing.
3. Does not look native at all (doesn't use native gtk theme)
Time to balance pros and cons.
Banshee has excellent video support, Rhythmbox has none. There's a plugin for Rhythmbox somewhere, but seems to be abandonware.
Banshee unfortunately uses Mono, Rhythmbox is pure C++ (as far as I know).
Banshee has no genre selector, Rhythmbox does. But that will change in a near future.
Banshee has no Jamendo support, Rhythmbox does.
My conclusion: if video support is integrated in Rhythmbox, I'd totally vote for it. In the meanwhile I'd stick with Banshee.

Exaile all the way, perfect balance!
I like rhythmbox because it's gpl. GPL is better to protect freedom and is better for community.
Rhythmbox is maintained by a community instead of Banshee which is developed by novell.
Rhthmbox have a lot of years of integration with ubuntu. It's not better to change again.
Is rhythmbox is replaced , pro-mono people will try to insert pinta on ubuntu.
Mono? No, thanks.

Also agree with mangouste06. Don't like mono...
I agree with mangouste06.
Banshee = mono
and mono = nonononononononononononononononononononononononononononono !!!!
Is it clear enough? Even if the ubuntu technical commity doesn't see any problem using it.
