Instead of making a poll and asking everyone, then waiting for the answer, pick one and start working on it already.

  • Nikomaruhito - 13 years ago

It should all be server side, so hackers have to be more skilled to hack all that stuff. If health is client side then they can hack that all day long and never die. Rude-ass hackers. Inventory can be modded and controlled by wrappers... wait... could the health be controlled by wrappers, too?

  • Stefan - 13 years ago

As a server admin, fixing the exploits used by MCCHeat is something I would like to see given attention. I allow MCCheat users on my server because to fight it would be an exercise in futility. Please, fix the basics first before getting into the health problems.

  • xarler - 13 years ago

lets just hope server side invo's get fixed..... Maybe notch will.... Pull a BOTH PVP AND Server Side Inventory

  • Varilian - 13 years ago

I voted for health, since it is a higher priority to me, but still a low priority.
Health isn't that important to me, since the characters on my server are mainly building together, and I would probably edit their inventories to give them the -dmg armor, so they can build without dying.

Inventory bugs aren't a problem either, since they can just get whatever blocks they need anyway from me.

The more important things to me would probably be bugs in general. Making items all work properly, making servers in general less glitchy/laggy, etc.

  • Shellite - 13 years ago

I think there is one thing that almost every single person here is forgetting:

    **************************************************************************************
    **************************************************************************************
**** THE GAME IS AN ALPHA BUILD, IT IS NOT THE FINAL PRODUCT, IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE BUGGY. ****
    **************************************************************************************
    **************************************************************************************

If you do not understand what this means, I emplore you to educate yourself before slandering notch or any other developer for that matter. While I think its awesome he released the alpha builds publically, I can certainly see the negative effect it can have on participants who do not at all understand what their actually involved in.

Thumbs up notch, your doing a great job!

    -Shellite

  • guilhem - 13 years ago

I'd REALLY like better performances too, a less laggy game. That's the most imperative stuff this game need IMO.

  • arsenic0 - 13 years ago

SMP Damage no doubt. Exploiting can be resolved at the server level by banning.

  • Luca - 13 years ago

Please, Please, Please get health in! All these hey0 mods (CombatPVE, Mixxit) just feel wrong, and the game just feels cheap without fall damage, lava damage, or drowning damage. My friends and I are actually looking forward to dying so everything won't be as easy :P

  • TechGuard - 13 years ago

No Duping is, much, much, much more important!
Save Health and stuff for beta =]

  • sammygunns - 13 years ago

Im gay and i play minecraft a lot cause it sucks and i dont like it at all..... im still gay and minecraft still sucks.. and everything in the game sucks, it needs better graphics cause they are gay like me.. and notch is so very fat and gay yeah

  • bob jones - 13 years ago

    Everything, fatass

  • fuckyounotch - 13 years ago

why don't you update both at the same time (and actually fix them, not just put out some update that breaks more than it fixes) while including a bunch of cool new shit like the old notch would do? oh wait he's dead rip old notch all hail new notch i hope you're enjoying all of the money we gave you while you sit on twitter all day every day drinking beer coding maybe 2 hours a week fuck you piece of shit

  • notchfuckingsucks - 13 years ago

This poll is dumb. It's like asking "what's more important: breathing or eating?". Both of those are equally important for survival multiplayer to actually be functional beyond "creative plus", just flip a coin or something if you can only see yourself doing one of them.

TBH I just want leaves to quit staying in the fucking air while he works on some new method to deal with stray leaf blocks in between playing Civ V, eating out with his fiance, and occasionally working on his main moneymaking project.

  • Dusty - 13 years ago

It's called survival, so naturally we need damage/health to even call this mode survival.

You think it would be his first priority instead of adding broken items.

  • Tyler - 13 years ago

While server playrs outnumber us server owners, the dupe fixes are more damaging..

Imagine a duper with infinite golden apples, but there's HP too. He's NOT going to die unless the server owner barricades him in TNT and books it.

  • Bryon - 13 years ago

I'd rather you fix this new bug where the blocks keep coming back after you mine them--please :D

  • sinn01 - 13 years ago

Awesome work so far notch, i actually can see the monsters in smp now, fkn awesome man lol, and i can turn hell on with my server, but if i do that i spawn there and cant get out, nor get in if i turn it off, any ideas? anyways!! awesome stuff man, everytime i see a tweet on MC stuff your upto, i get a bounce in ma step i absolutely love the game and you give us so much support and keep us in the loop,. so thank you SOOO much :D

  • Guiantonio - 13 years ago

Lol, for health need to fix the dupe bug, every noob will get a tnt and dupe hundreds and will kill all users using the tnt and some golden apple he dupe too.

  • dicks1jo - 13 years ago

Health and working mobs would be amazing for the community of my server. Items, not so much a big deal. Not too worried about forming a scarcity economy when cooperation is the name of our game, but once we've had our fill of building we want something to kill!

P.S.: The ability to toggle or scale health/armor via server.properties would rock

  • CandleJack - 13 years ago

I want health in SMP i can't wa-

  • Idgarad - 13 years ago

Notch, without SMP you are wasting months of potential play testing time.Without damage there is no way to test mob scaling as a player population rises nor gauge spawning counts, timing, etc as that factors into game play. You need to gather the following metrics or ask people to track it:

The damage per hour of game play a player takes during the day and again in the evening.

This is important because you will need to compare what happens when you have a single player, two players, and so on. If a single player averages 9 damage per hour played but it drops to 2 damage with two player you can quickly identify scaling issues with difficulty. You will need a sizable sample size also of at least 200 users with at least 25% of those (50) covering the 2 concurrent players and at least 25 players covering three players.

Without damage enabled you are effectively cutting off at least half of your functional test cases you would want to review during alpha testing. You needed to focus on game play features and find what works and what doesn't. While inventory duping is an issue it's a defect at this point rather then a feature to be tested... you can do a shakeout prior to Beta, feature freeze and clean up defects during beta.

  • Tom - 13 years ago

Button #3. Debug last bug fix patch.

  • dStank - 13 years ago

This is a really hard decision since, y'know... they're both integral parts of gameplay. I'm thinking inventory first, since I'd rather be able to properly fight monsters.

Also, advice from a corporate software developer: hire a testing guy. Exclusively testing. Testing.

  • edgar - 13 years ago

I only wish for notch to test his builds before forcing super-buggy updates out on everyone.

Boats weren't great before, and now they are completely borked.

this is a great game, but people doing multiplayer have been left out in the cold.

  • ilovenotch - 13 years ago

ihatenotch, you must be some weird guy or a 5yo or somthing, you should respect and admire the guy that he actually brought you guys this game and if the people wouldnt be flaming this much and naggin he wouldnt have had to spend his time on your bullshit and fix it.

  • ihatenotch - 13 years ago

why don't you update both at the same time (and actually fix them, not just put out some update that breaks more than it fixes) while including a bunch of cool new shit like the old notch would do? oh wait he's dead rip old notch all hail new notch i hope you're enjoying all of the money we gave you while you sit on twitter all day every day drinking beer coding maybe 2 hours a week fuck you piece of shit

  • Bill Kress - 13 years ago

Your next hire should be an experienced QA person. It's somewhat telling that you didn't hire one right off.

  • Freqout - 13 years ago

Neither of these is anywhere near as important to me as fixing boats and carts. We play on a fairly large map and now that the latest patch has broken all forms of transport that make it a bit easier to cover a lot of ground and crippled actual mining our server is sitting idle and unused. For me, fixing the new boat and mining bugs and getting carts working properly are the most important things. After that I'd say streamlining the client-server traffic to cut down on redraw delays.

After all of that then I'd say server-side inventory fixes.

I'd put health waaay down the list since all those guys who want epic pvp battles will then bitch about combat balance, weapon and armor limitations and whatnot. Whole new cans of worms will be opened. Much much better to fix critical core game-play bugs first before even thinking about touching this stuff.

  • zero298 - 13 years ago

I don't really care about inventory right now since it's more a less a feature that you can add items through console on the fly right now. However, we have no way of enabling health systems at all.

  • Steven Rice - 13 years ago

I would REALLY like the health to be fixed as multiplayer isn't actually a game without it. And to start an actual multiplayer survival game would be amazing.

  • G M - 13 years ago

What I'd *really* prefer is a fix to make it so that people with Atheros cards can stay connected to the server for more than 60 seconds. Every other improvement to multiplayer is irrelevant to me until then.

  • Kraiten - 13 years ago

If there is an ability to damage other players please have an easy-to-use option to disable it. Thanks in advance and good luck!

  • Ives van Hoorne - 13 years ago

Oh, @notchisgay you just need to stop saying such things, he's coding all day long and answers questions on twitter sometimes. I don't see you making such a great game. Just shut up.

Me and my friends are really hoping that we could play with health, we already are making forts to kill ourselves, lol. And those freaking chickens are really annoying when they stand in your fort and you can't kill them. And please fix lag fast, I just can't mine D:.

I really love your game, Notch.

  • Robot Banana - 13 years ago

Health, of course. We already have mods that fix dupe bugs and stuff, so health is a priority.

  • Deoxys114 - 13 years ago

@aUsCkEs: Then just don't dupe! Lol. If you don't like duping, then don't do it. I don't see what's so hard to understand about that. Is the urge to get free items so incredibly powerful that it overpowers your distaste for duping? If so, I think you need to take a break. Lol.

  • Legojack261 - 13 years ago

Definitely Health fixes. Without that, theres really no Survival aspect in Survival Multiplayer. It's just a "Fancy" Creative mode...

  • Tryst - 13 years ago

I just wish furnaces worked properly. I'm tired of losing entire stacks of items when I put them in one. I'd be playing SMP right now if it didn't have that problem.

  • aUsCkEs - 13 years ago

    @Deoxys114:
It's still duping, and it still doesn't give me a reason to go collect resources. I can collect one of each and dupe thousands of stacks.

  • cliffton - 13 years ago

I just destroyed the same dirt blockl 6 times D: fix this then worry about other stuff

  • Tyler - 13 years ago

The fact that we have to prioritize fixes, pray to notch, and wait patiently is a real shame. Everything would be working by now if the game were open source. The modding community has already improved so much on decompiled, obfuscated code. There are plenty of developers, myself included, who would work on these issues for free.

  • Patacorow - 13 years ago

Definitly more features rather than server-side inventory! :D

  • VictorXjoeY - 13 years ago

Well I would prefer a lagfix before anything like health (getting hurt), attacking monsters / animals so I voted for "no dupe bugs and no item cration exploits".

  • eleven357 - 13 years ago

    I like cannabis.

  • Marc - 13 years ago

Server-side Health will get you 2xtimes the sells you currently have, I know a lot of people who only wait for dmg in SMP to buy the game... And inventory bug is somewhat useful... sometimes hehe

  • frightening statistic - 13 years ago

20% of Minecraft players are Creative Mode 2.0 advocates

  • Skully7780 - 13 years ago

I'm sorry but this was VERY bad timing for this poll. We need a fix for the last fix first! Its all fudged up!

  • Calvissuperman - 13 years ago

there are %20 of voters that chose INVENTORY FIXES OVER HEALTH?!?!?

  • Deoxys114 - 13 years ago

@aUsCkEs: Duping stuff like gunpowder is alraedy possible. You just find a dungeon, and more times than not, there is some gunpowder in there. Honestly, I'd love to see Dmg fixed over invos fixed. If someone dupes an item, then kick them from the server. If someone does it on accident, there's an amazing invention called lava that one can throw it in. Not that big of a deal.

  • saepe - 13 years ago

whats MOST important to me is you doing what you want to do and not give in to the demands of you player base...i don't want you to feel like this is a job, you be having fun first and foremost.

  • Andrew - 13 years ago

It can be done hackishly now but I'd like to see the ability to have an allowed users list instead of just a disallowed users list.

  • aUsCkEs - 13 years ago

I find it extremely pitiful how people voted for health and damage first. What's gonna happen now is, people are gonna be able to get things like gunpowder and THEN dupe it. I believe there is no reason whatsoever for health to be fixed before exploits, but if that's what people's 10-years old mentality tells them what's best, so be it.

  • Cklanck - 13 years ago

I wouldlove if you added like a comunication way on multiplyer with mics! Like skype! :P would be cool! Am i right? :)

  • Anonymous918BA47 - 13 years ago

So many people just say they would rather have server-side inventory fixed first yet in the poll they are getting pwnt. Isn't that great? I've been waiting for actual SMP gameplay since minecraft came out. I rarely have issues regarding lag on my friend's server, so yay! Finally health fix

  • Sam - 13 years ago

I can wait a little longer for killing monsters/players/animals, but I'd really like the cart health to be fixed-- so I'd say that one.

  • Reason - 13 years ago

@reality Yup, that's is the way to go, with a 500k+ minecrafters that have the alpha stage of the game you should only stick to the 2-3 people that got the game since it's buggy as all hell, that's it.. or ont eh off chance that you'd rather have a large group of people that all have different ideas of what to build and a giant map to do it, there is always the odd chance that you might want to fix the foundation before the add-ons, but that's only coming from the voice of reason :3

  • blankko - 13 years ago

Can the server be rewritten in C? Java takes up a lot of ram currently and hosting it on servers with gigs of ram isn't cheap.

  • matija erceg - 13 years ago

Notch: You could also try Google Moderator for asking users to rank features

  • Paulpwns - 13 years ago

In either case, everything looks great! Thanks Notch!!

  • ekcol - 13 years ago

Shouldn't you be refactoring it so that single player is just local multiplayer, and you won't have to keep making choices about what functionality to duplicate next?

  • Badmoonz - 13 years ago

Lag and Socket exceptions fixes would be most important to me. Then after that working health. Although, I only play on private servers with friends.

  • Azzura - 13 years ago

I voted for Sever Side inventory. I am always tempted after playing a game for a while, to go in and tweak settings and inventory. After you can do that, the game loses some fun factor. Plus in a multiplayer situation, you dont want cheating.

  • Managore - 13 years ago

    Hi Notch,

I know you don't like stating completion dates for fear of not meeting them, but do you have a rough idea of how long implementing these things will take? In any case, keep up the great work and laugh at the inevitable whiners.

  • Pragma - 13 years ago

IMO, a lot of SMP servers already have /give support and such, so duplication is kind of a moot concern. Having minecarts that work right, and killable monsters on poorly-configured servers is a much bigger problem where I've been.

  • Lucid - 13 years ago

Health because my friends and I want to play together. We wont allow ppl we don't know on so it doesn't matter.

  • Chenzo - 13 years ago

DAMAGE. Mining without fear is weaksauce.

  • Cull - 13 years ago

I play strictly single-player so far, so apologies for being off-topic in this particular poll but I have to chime in again on the lag thing. I did see Notch's comment that improvement is coming, so I'm strictly constructive here (and patient :).
I usually play offline, but even still it's quite a bit slower post Boo update. Further, I still on occasion get horrible "direction-specific" lag---silky smooth when facing/moving in certain direction(s), terribly laggy in other direction(s). It's right from the get-go upon generating a new map, never improves, and never varies.
I just generated one of the coolest maps I've seen but had that issue and had to delete it :(

  • spanky - 13 years ago

Duping bugs are much more important. Save health for beta.

  • c_dric - 13 years ago

    Health.

I'll be thankful when duping and such will be fixed but ultimately there is no way to prevent people from cheating so fixing health seems more urgent. Cheaters will cheat. I would rather focus on features that make the game more enjoyable for non cheaters.

    Thanks.

  • Decagonapus - 13 years ago

I'd rather have health because I just play with friends, not a bunch of random greifers. My friends are too lazy to exploit bugs so...

  • Andrew - 13 years ago

I'd be more interested to see portals between worlds or the ability to operate multiple worlds/dimensions in the same 1GB of server memory.

  • Devan Street - 13 years ago

Is this really a question? lol

  • Lokik - 13 years ago

Maybe make it when attacking people like a duel function otherwise they might just attack out of nowhere and be annoying? I don't know just a suggestion =)

  • AgentSnazz - 13 years ago

Server Side Health would have a huge impact on how we play the game. The Halloween update just gave us a similar massive addition of features.

While the majority of us may want more features, like health in SMP, as soon as possible, I think you could get away with a more behind-the-scenes update (like inventory fixes, and getting the nether to work in SMP) without upsetting the angry mob that demands (feature) updates.

Like you said, both should come, but what first? Keep us satisfied, but not spoiled.

  • Boro - 13 years ago

I don't want PvP.. Attacking each other is just another avenue for griefing, and that is less than fun.

  • 9th Sage - 13 years ago

Haven't played multiplayer much, but health I suppose. That way people stop complaining about it on every update. @_@ At least the server I've been on, people just spawn themselves items anyway.

  • ArchV - 13 years ago

This answer depends on the mode people want to play. The "Creative Mode" people will want inventory fixed because they don't care about monsters or health. The "Survival Mode" people will want health and monsters and killin'. The question is really yours Notch, what mode are you creating here? It's been toted as SMP. Survival Multiplayer. Your answer should be obvious, and the poll is reflecting that.

  • Salesmunn - 13 years ago

We want to play with friends. Scary you even had to run a poll......

  • Jimpy Crevice - 13 years ago

My vote is also for the lag to be no.1 priority before adding any new features, it's close to unplayable just now. like someone else said earlier on, get a solid foundation first so the game can be played, then add away. i'm sure we're all desperate for health and mobs etc working, but what's the point if we can barely play it?

  • Quinn Connor - 13 years ago

Personally, I like the no health in MP, because it makes it easier to build tall stuff, because you don't have to have a way down.

  • Klojamir - 13 years ago

"Two Thumbs Up" Your top Notch, I'll take whatever you work on 1st.

  • Arachin - 13 years ago

Ooh, I thought it would've been closer than that.

Dupe bugs are a shame, but they can be fixed by having an honest community. The health though... that'll change things...

... although my server mates cannow exact revenge on me for accidentally burning down the world.

  • chemicalderrick - 13 years ago

I think we rather need health. Inventory works fine, and if some dicks want to spoil their very own experience by exploiting, not their problem.
Health will add a lot to the game. The new players will need to take shelter in existent cities, encouraging the growth of them and increasing the need for working economy because of the increased need for resources.

Founding a new city will be much more difficult and that's how it should be in my opinion.

It also keeps griefers away, you NEED the community to survive.

  • Kane Hart - 13 years ago

Notch I wanted to let you know of the Bugs that all came in from the update yesterday and there was a lot.

    1) Right clicking in smp resulted in disconnecting from the servers.
    2) Cart's can't be broken without TNT them
    3) If you logout a mirror image of you stays in the cart or boat and you stay black and it's really glitchy.
    4) Minecarts are probably never going be perfect and a system to always work on but I think just a tad more tweaking in fact try working with Minecarts while your not inside them also.

Things are getting better but getting some of these fixed with I think server side inventory would be one of the best things for SMP at this time. I think a lot of none server admins don't see the importance of performance and server side inventory. Most people say I want to kill monsters. Well you know what Notch? There is already like 2-3 Killing scripts and AI is just another massive performance system you need to work on why not do the small and easy tasks first!

    Thanks for reading this!

    kane

  • Drheadcrab - 13 years ago

I only play on a server with my friend, So dup bugs aren't a big deal to me.

  • Matthew - 13 years ago

get the health going, but i think there should be a server side option to enable or disable health.

  • Jonas - 13 years ago

I would really like to have minecarts work in multiplayer. Being able to make fun cart-rides with buddies would be so awesome!

  • Kane Hart - 13 years ago

I really think server side inventory is more important so we can go more legit faster then later.

  • Sneckster - 13 years ago

I prefer work on the single player, and getting my fps up a bit.... oh and give us ten worlds instead of five so I don't have to wait until Moreworlds updates before I can update MC

  • reality - 13 years ago

    @Joy
Try playing with your friends instead of strangers online.
Your friends aren't cheaters, are they?

  • Joy - 13 years ago

Filbo said it right, it is said this poll also let's people vote who lack a brain.

There is even a working combat plugin for hey0 mod!! However NO plugin can fix the huge inventory issues we have, and how is killing mobs EVER relevant if you can just dupe whatever the first one drops.

Dear lord, this is how Bush got elected isn't it.
