It was sitting at $27.39 on 11/2, around $26.85 when Ballmer dumped 49.3 million shares on the 5th, and closed at $26.27 on Friday the 12th. MSFT has dropped $1.12 in 10 days.
You guys can spin it any way you want, but as far as product launches go, this is a major bellyflop.
I think that in the beginning it wont do so well. But give it maybe a year and it will start to become more prominent.

I dumped my iPhone (of two years) on day 1 of the Windows Phone 7 after trying it out. It's an excellent phone and fantastic user interface. I didn't think it was possible for Microsoft to make a device so smooth and responsive but they did. What a great foundation to build from. I love my new Windows Phone and will never go back. As far as the people throwing out that Android and iPhones are selling 200k and 260k phones per day, that's a complete fabrication. Basic math will tell you this. There's no way they are selling 73 MILLION and 94.9 MILLION phones per year. If you're going to throw out a stat, at least try and make it believable. I appreciate that Microsoft didn't try and copy the iPhone (unlike the Android) and made an effort to release something unique and different to the smartphone market.

I hope some fanboy doesn't come along and hack this poll like they did the wall street journal. I happen to love wp7 my focus is absolutely the best and after owning an evo it is refreshing to be able to use my phone all day even with certain features not there yet with wp7 I still prefer it over android and iphone

@Nid: Not exactly accurate there amigo... Microsoft continues to post record profits as a whole, XBox is profitable on its own. Windows Phone 7 is a terrific product that will do well over time. Microsoft has the time and the resources to build this business alongside their other products. They are doing well in consumer and fantastic in the enterprise. 1.3 billion customers and growing their global position. Hardly a dire situation for shareholders and for those who are paying attention, at a PE of 11, Microsoft is a bargain.

Microsoft has the time and the resources to build this business alongside their other products. They are doing well in consumer and fantastic in the enterprise. 1.3 billion customers and growing their global position. Hardly a dire situation for shareholders and for those who are paying attention, at a PE of 11, Microsoft is a bargain.

One thing I think is often overlooked is availability. In the US Apple is only available from At&t. Androids availability should obviously over take Apple in unit sales very quickly. When the 2-3 year cycle came up for many Sprint/Verizon/Tmobile customers, Android was the. Best choice. I agree that Microsoft will come strong with consumer affinity especially as corporations adopt the platform for enterprise mobile devices. I mean who would have paid for a BlackBerry a few years ago if the mindshare had not been there from corporate usage?
The refresh cycle is the killer. It will only take a small shift in either business practice or functionality for Microsoft to catch up. My view of a small shift is debatable in that I am speaking of a better warranty plan for one of the phones or a subsidized data plan. So if Google were to subsidize data plans for using Android, Apple marketshare would go away overnight. This story has not yet been told...

On Friday, June 27, 2007, the first generation iPhone launched. According to Apple, 270,000 units were sold in the U.S. the first 2 days: http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/earnings/2007-07-25-apple_N.htm . To be fair, it was launched on a Friday, making it much easier for people to make it to the stores. I'll tell you what - I'll bet you $50.00 that the total U.S. sales for all WP7 models for the first WEEK (Monday 11/8 through Sunday 11/14) will be less than half of Apple's 2-day numbers (135,000 units). If they sold 40,000 units the first day, means they only have to average 15,834 units per day for the next 6 days. Sound fair?

I'll bet you that when the official numbers come out, first day domestic sales will be under 45,000.

Microsoft's WP7 is far superior product than iPhone or any crappy Android toys out there. Saying that, let me tell you I have been using iPhone since 2007, upgraded my device 3 times and never had a PC in my life. The first two days of my time spent with WP7-Samsung Focus is the fuel behind this commnet.

Before you start throwing numbers around, like 260,000 iPhones and 200,000 Android phones per day - you should at least know the source, and what they mean. I'm pretty sure these are world-wide. So when you compare them to the day #1 of WP7 sales in the US, on a Monday -- of course 40K doesn't look impressive. What you are forgetting through, is that WP7 was selling overseas a month before the US, and that you can't project a number into the future based on a single data point.

About Zune -- it is a superior product. I've owned 2 iPods before I got a Zune, and I've sold iPod keeping Zune - I like it very much, many fresh ideas in the UI. The Zune software is also miles ahead of iTunes. Why MS didn't win with Zune? I think it's called "pick your own battles" - by the time Zune became competitive, the MP3 player market was mature, and gradually transforming to smart phones. So, there was no point in fighting for the MP3 player market anymore. What you find today, however, is that Zune has made its way to WP7 and Xbox - the two consumer devices, which are here to stay. Maybe the Zune device's market share was small, but that's not the first time in history when a superior product loses in the market. I'm pretty sure you haven't even held one in your hand, and that's telling a lot.

@Dave K, you've pulled the 40K number out of thin air.There is no way that Microsoft will let WP7 go down, they will persist. Also, you are forgetting that a typical renewal cycle for cellphones is 2-3 years. All this means, that within next 2 years, every one of 250000 US adults will have a choice to make, and WP7 will be one of the available options.

There are about 300,000,000 Americans, about 250,000,000 of them are adults.
Google is selling about 200,000 Androids a day, Apple sells about 260,000 per day.
Even after all the hype and that huge ad campaign, only 40,000 WP7 units were moved on Monday.
Steve Ballmer saw this coming. He dumped 49,300,000 shares of Microsoft stock last Friday - not exactly something you do just before you launch something that is supposed to make your stock rise. He said it was for tax purposes. I see it as insider trading. Maybe Martha Stewart will bake him some cookies.
