I coach in the NCAA and had a daughter go through all the college NCAA stuff one year ago. The NCAA has no means whatsoever of policing anything. Schools are not allowed to investigate anything with students until after the NCAA has cleared them. And then the NCAA will come back and punish the school because they did not do their homework on the kid's family which the NCAA has said is illegal for the schools to do. So schools must be given permission from the NCAA to get a kid. The NCAA gives permission for the kid to go to school. And then the NCAA can punish the school for things that happened before the NCAA cleared the student initially. The NCAA has no one to answer to and until someone with enough backbone and money to fight the "good ol boys" it will continue to be business as usual. And my daughter probably knew about 10% of the schools I talked with for her. The NCAA rules should be illegal to apply to anyone under the age of 18 ever. The NCAA does not know their own rules -- how can a high school student possibly know them???

If he was white he'd already have been crucified by the NCAA. But since he and his old man have the NAACP, and Obama working for them, how can he loose?

  • buthole - 13 years ago

  • buthole - 13 years ago

for all you ppl who think he didnt know your stupid because he knew theres no way 'his dad could get money without him knowing. He's just Reggie#2

If you read the requirements of Heisman candidacy you will see the word "integrity" coupled with the athlete's performance on the field. It depends what your definition of "integrity" is. If he violated a voter's definition of "integrity", then he fails to meet one of a few requirements.

I am so sick and tired of these media idoits who try to make a name for themselves with the onstant garbage they bring up about a young man who led his team, the Auburn Tigers, to the SEC Championship and the BCS title game. The young man is NOT RESPONSIBILE for what his father did. But the constant comments like last night but that incomtetent Chris Fowler on the Heisman show was total irresponsible on Fowler's part and the ESPN Director for allowing it to happen. That had NOTHING TO DO with the Heisman show. Fowler did nothing but try to embarrass a young man who has is the best college football player in America. He won the O'Brien and Maxwell Awards on Thursday and the Heisman on Saturday. As far as I am concerned ESPN sucks and have no business trying to be the authority on Sports. Auburn Unitveristy would not tolerate any wrong doing by any player and when the Auburn, the SEC and the NCAA all cleared CAM of any wrong doing then the stupid MEDIA idiots need to shut their damn mouth or get the heck off the airways.

I'm so sick of hearing about the race thing when it comes to a black person being involved in something bad!! Yeah there is still rascism and its on behalf of black people that are extremely rascist!!! It is so hard to be white now days we are the minority and we have everyone against us. I'm 100% sure if this was a white guy it would be a whole different story and believe that!!!! Give the heisman to lamichael james!!! Oregon has got the game in the bag anyways.

    Remember SMU

  • Anita - 13 years ago

Why write this article? Why not just give him credit where credit is due? Cam was officially cleared of the investigation...and while I'm at it...he did one heck of a job this season...he's a "black quarterback" that lead his team to victory...

There is such a thing you know....YOU GO CAM!! YOU GO!

He's an exceptional player, very good. i think he knows, being a family definitely they have talked about it.

  • Big T - 13 years ago

Let's see now. This guy got busted at Florida twice, for stealing, for cheating, then he goes to Blinn to be coached by a Francione(big wink); and then ends up at Auburn after being shopped through the SEC again by his Dad. Now he gets the Heismann on the merits, and nobody believes anything other than he's a stand up, honest, worthy of the trophy kind of guy! Wow, he really does represent all that's "sports" today.

  • jay - 13 years ago

Would you just leave him alone if Cam had known do you think he would be at mississippi state and not Auburn his dad was behind it and he never told his son your just mad because he is really really good at what he does we never questioned The Florida Gators QB tim we never questioned Alabamas QB we never Questioned any of the Great players what Auburn can't have a Great team WTF is wrong with you haters are only Alabama and Florida aloud to have great sessions from 08 to 10 F*** no its not far that when Cam is leading a really gifted team.my teeam didn't do all that great and I'm not mad the only ression yout making it a big deal is because your teams did bad or alright ether way doesn't matter your just trying to make a big deal over nothing. So just move on leave Cam alone

  • Chris - 13 years ago

So he'll lose the Heisman but go to the NFL and make millions. Works for me. And all you people who dislike it can kiss Reggie Bush's superbowl ring.

Cam Newton was involved in the theft of a fellow students laptop. He tried to hide that involvement by throwing it out of the window when Police Officers knocked on his door. If his story of making a dumb mistake was a lie. He proved it when he THREW it out the window. He knew the laptop was stolen. He didn't throw his sneakers, books, TV, stereo or cellphone out of his window. Just the laptop that he knew was stolen went out the window. His mistake was getting caught. The number of traffic tickets he collected while at Florida prove that he absolutely cannot operate a car according to traffic laws or proves his belief that laws and rules don"t apply to him because he is a Heisman caliber athlete. Cheating speaks for itself. Education means nothing to future paychecks from football. Humility, please, watch his personal celebrations after TDs and Games. Does he celebrate his teams victory or is he basking in his glory. Please watch replays and decide. Actions speak Louder than words.

The only way Cam didn't know about the money is if he was living on Mars and if he was living on Mars - how could he be playing football for anyone? The Heisman has become another of the NCAA's and BCS's tools to make money - lots of money. He'll probably lose his award next year and, this year, then will be devoid of any winner. AGAIN!
He is an awfully good football player, but this award is about more than ability - it is also about sportsmanship, integrety, honesty, and a number of other things.
The other thing I can't believe is this - There were 3 other football players "considered" for the award and all were from the west. That has to be a first - usually the east has or is given everything - surprise, surprise.
The last thing I have to say about the BCS is this - tell me again why Connecticut is so much better than Boise State, TCU, Nevada, or any of the teams that "just don't play anyone". Oh, I forgot - they belong to an "elite" conference & that makes up for their rating. The BCS themselves haven't ranked them at all this year, but they will be in a BCS bowl and someone from the top 10 - also rated by the BCS - will be going elsewhere. Ridiculous!!

  • Shad - 13 years ago

Yes he will keep it the NCAA is not going to admit to screwing up again. What grown man doesnt know his own fatjer is auctioning him off for thousands of dollars.

  • BobW - 13 years ago

From the Heisman Trust website: The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.

Integrity? CN was arrested for possessing a stolen laptop computer (the idiotic throw it out the window incident) and was facing disciplinary action over academic cheating when he left Florida. Regardless of the father's obvious lack of character, CN's a jerk and the Heisman is a joke.

  • Drew - 13 years ago

I beleive it more likely he will be forced to sell it to pay for legal defense fund.

  • drew - 13 years ago

    Heisman Trophy Mission Statement:

"The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity."

STFU about racial bias already. The word "integrity" is key and if you don't understand what that means then fkn look it up.

  • Tom - 13 years ago

The BCS and NCAA both got what they wanted, a national championship game between Auburn and Oregon. In the end, the dollars were the deciding factor for the NCAA, the BCS and Cam's father. Awarding the Heisman to a football player who both stole and cheated during his freshman year but yet claims to know nothing about his father's role in a pay for play scheme is a disgrace. My son's little league trophy says more about charachter that this award.

As long as a lynch mob mentality continues from the so-called sports journalists who have used innuendo, rumor, half-truth, and plain lying to report, this will stay alive even though there is no evidence supporting any of it. You fools have missed the real story - the conniving behind the scenes by Auburn's rivals to creat this.

  • Fox - 13 years ago

Great player - yes. Had no knowledge of what daddy was doing? Doubtful. Anybody who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. The NCAA simply didn't want to take on the old guard, the money makers, the good ole boys, the SEC. This case is no different than Reggie Bush. In allowing this to go on, the NCAA is saying that it's ok for your parents to shop you around as long as you don't know about it? It completely contradicts the Bush decision. The only logical explanation is that the NCAA is afraid of the SEC. The NCAA is simply delaying the inevitable, in 5 years, they'll rule Newton ineligible, and we'll be robbed of a true champion for 2010 since Auburn will have to forfeit all victories. But as long as they keep making money.......

  • Donte' - 13 years ago

This entire situation dealing Newton has been an ongoing media frenzy for too long and it seems to me that we as united as we say that we are, have molded somehow around Mr. Bush's Heisman contrevoursy for long enough! I believe that we should research more and have enough evidence before someone' reputation is dragged into the streets to be ran over and those who are reporting such allegations should be held accountable for their resources but only if their intentions are wrongfully injustice to defame one's position to only be the first to report this first to be heard for a promotion for the big scoop!!!

  • pat - 13 years ago

    will he.... yes

    should he be.... no

two incidences in 1 year has to prompt the ncaa to reconsider its rules on d1 college athletes. so many people are making huge money off these kids, its a shame the ncaa doesn't stick up for the athletes its out there to serve.

  • John - 13 years ago

Cam doesn't care any more than Reggie did about a shiny trophy. They are nothing more than meal tickets for parents that sold them on an auction block like a slave to the highest bidder. Cam and Reggie never missed a game for breaking the rules and still get their large NFL contracts. The NCAA has the moral problem since they continue to make exceptions for entry into colleges for street thugs to make money off the thugs playing the game. The NFL has already turned into a prison league so maybe we should take the schools out of it and call the ncaa football a junior prison league.

  • spankme - 13 years ago

WAKE UP PEOPLE! He didn't know what his father was up to. Please. College football is so dirty it makes those idiots in the NBA look like choir boys. Keep sticking your heads in the sand and let the charade continue.

  • Kevin Langston - 13 years ago

He was picked for his performance, Play NOT Pay! The honor stays his as earned.

  • Mark Eells - 13 years ago

The Heisman is awarded for excellence on the football field. Still there is the stipulation that the player must be eligible. The NCAA is given the duty of determining eligibility. If, by the NCAA's rules, Cam Newton is later found ineligible, then retroactively he is no longer in consideration for the award. And, like Bush he will be asked to return it.
I think the most telling aspect of his character has been his unwillingness to condemn his father's actions. A simple, "I love my father, but what he did was wrong," would be enough.

  • james - 13 years ago

I can't see how Cam Newton didn't kno wat his father was doin with this pay for play scheme.. but I think if he does keep it then the NCAA is a fool!... but on tha other hand Cam Newton is a talented and very good quarter back... Good luck to him and his family!

  • WJK - 13 years ago

Where there is smoke... He should have been declared ineligible when the story broke. For the NCAA to make such a quick decision about him playing reeked of having the #1 team in the nation striped of their wins before the BCS. It is OK if you do it 5 or 10 years later nobody really gets that worked up... heavens sake we might loose sponsorship money.

Face it college football is taxpayer subsidized big business. As taxpayers, we foot the entire cost of the NFL minor leagues. It is long past time that we cut basketball and football out of the NCAA. If the teams can survive financially on their own fine, otherwise can them.

ALL student players in the current system should be compensated at the rate of a part time job they could be holding while going to school. If you take the "Student" designation, you just signed up for a four year hitch. No jumping to the pro leagues at the expense of the schools.

Hey, point of fact, they never stripped Bush of his Heisman. He gave it back voluntarily.

C'mon cut the kid a break, despite the actions of his father, whether or not he knew about the money, HE DIDN'T TAKE IT.

Give the kid some credit for walking away from it. It's pretty clear the NCAA didn't act against KNUTon personally as a means of rewarding the kid for turning his back on the dough.

He's an outstanding athlete, the question becomes, where will he fit in the NFL? QB, wideout, running back? He can play them all and he'll dominate.

  • Alex - 13 years ago

Evidence against Reggie was readily available...WHERE IS THE NEWTON MONEY TRAIL? Are you honestly suggesting that a man who can't keep his church open outfoxed the SEC and NCAA, staff and lawyers? Wake up sheeple.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the FBI folks....

  • Randy - 13 years ago

I think Auburn will be sanctioned very heavily for many years. But it may take years to come to pass. It appears that Auburn has committed criminal activity for a long time. That's why the FBI is involved.

  • Tyler - 13 years ago

Can you prove that he knew what his father was doing? Can you hold a kid responsible for what his mother or father does?

  • A. MacGregor - 13 years ago

It's not so much about the Heisman committee continually awarding their trophy to the kids of underhanded opportunist parents, but this whole NCAA student/athlete thing is such a huge charade. Let's face it, these are just dumb athletes who have no interest in getting an education. They simply hang around their Taj Mahal like athletic facilities, play video games, watch ESPN, lift weights, and go to prcatice. Plenty of tutors are around to write papers and take tests for these idiots. Can't we dispense with all of this crap about them being student athletes. I don't care if they are mercenaries who are simply hired to play sports, but let's be honest and quit calling them students. That is an insult to the students who are serious about their education.

  • dharr - 13 years ago

If Newton's father was acting as his agent, then he should be stripped of the trophy. But if his father was acting on his own, even if Newton knew of it, what could he do? He should not be found guilty unless there is proof that he was complicit in the attempt to extort money.

  • Robby - 13 years ago

He seems deserving of the award, without doubt. He also deserves to be accurately quoted in his remarks to the press after being given the award. In the news brief leading this reply column he is quoted as saying "I want to give special thanks to my teammates. Without those guys I wouldn't be here right now getting the recognition". While he may have said that, he said on the television news that he thanked God for his being able to get this recognition. Wonder why the writer didn't quote Newton fully, or accurately, whichever. Newton's thanks to ALL the above makes him an even bigger winner because he knows the whole story! Reporters are supposed to report the whole story.

  • Mitch - 13 years ago

Does the NCAA really believe that SCAM Newton is telling the truth? With academic fraud and felony theft in his wake at Florida does anyone think Newton would be bound by honor to tell the truth? Like Reggie Bush, use the college game as a stepping stone to a million dollar payday and when the cheating is exposed later, well, he's already been paid.

  • Jimmie - 13 years ago

The Heissman is given based on your performance as an Athlete. It is not based on the background or the unscrupulous behavior of your family members or relatives. If that were the case, many athletes, performers, singers, dancers, even Nobel Laureates would forfeit their awards or have them taken away. This c=guy did not commit murder. And honestly, Michael Phelps, the FIVE gold medalist from the Summer Olympics committed a felony of possession of an illegal substance and had his photo taken while doing it and no one seems to mention the fact that he should give his medals away. I guess his picture of him stoned on a box of Wheaties is OK but Neuton Sr committed an UNFORGIVABLE sin that his son was not even involved in and we should crucify him. Can you say "Hypocrisy" or "Racial Bias". Yeah. Just call it what it is!!!!

iT'S AMAZING THAT THE PEOPLE WHO OFFER THE MONEY ARE NEVER MENTIONED... SAME OLE DEAL WHERE HE WHO SUPPLIED GUNS AND AMMO ARE NEVER RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WAR.. Its like asking a freezing person to hold out, don't put on that coat,,, just wait until you make it big; never mind that only one in five million of you might just make it... I believe these colleges are making so much money off of these kids it is SINFUL...
These kids put in hours upon hours netting these BILLIONS OF DOLLARS YET at the hint of recieving and improper meal ( you are declared the Devils offspring) Hello!!! I hear Pro athletes talk of being broke after 5-8 years.. go figure.. These kids at the very least should be compensated for their sacrafices beyond the cost of a college education to pay for all the injuries sustained without of beyond the insurance or lack their of.... Why are the payers never punished.. Oh oh yeah Vegas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cameron Newton is one of a kind and he is not responsible for the sins of his father. Of course he will keep the Heisman he so outstandingly won in spite of the scewball views of the 106 who did not even include his name. War Eagle!
