I think they are slyly paying tribute to Lyndsey Faye's book.

Game of Shadows sounds like a "bored" game in an age of Video games.
I'm sure it may change again. Perhaps they are trying to appeal to those Sherlockians who felt they strayed too far from the cerebral Holmes turning him into an action hero.
I for one enjoyed the movie & always felt Holmes had those abilities that made him an action figure. Stick fighting (Fencing), boxing, marksmen, etc.
In fact I agree with David Stuart Davies who said the one major missed opportunity in the GREAT Rathbone movies is they never gave him a dueling scene. Rathbone was amongst the finest fencing actors in Hollywood.
