The fact is that in a city where everything possible is done to discourage people from owning cars, pets have to go places too and the only way to get there if they belong to a non-car-owing person is on Muni (even car-sharing services ban them). Without a car, if I couldn't take my cat on Muni in her carrier, I guess the only way to get her to the vet would be in a pricey cab (if I could get one). That, of course, would be thrown into the hopper for my regular reappraisal of whether to get a car.
