as a Hospice nurse, I have seen patients suffering, but if their healthcare team had told them up front about palliative care or hospice care..their last years, months and days would be far from suffering. Yes, there are diseases that are more painful but hospice and palliative care teams are experts in caring for those specific pain and symptoms. Doing this gives them a quality of life and a chance to live until they die. Yes, it's scary to know you have a limited time on this earth but there are counsellors, chaplains, physicians and nurses that share their experience with them. With each patient cared for I learned something either from the patient or family and I promised I would carry that over to care for the next patient and family. I am retired and am not affiliated with any organization but the one thing I heard almost everyday was "I wish we had been referred to Hospice and palliative care sooner." Let individuals try Hospice first and then if they feel that this is not the decision for them, then discuss this option. Remember, death is a part of life.

The pain you suffer from losing a loved one is terrible. It truly is. The pain the patient suffers is far worse. It's not only selfish to force them into continued suffering, but it will weigh on their loved ones financially as well. The least selfish thing anyone can do is accept their time when it comes.

Yes, I believe they should. Just because they are terminally I'll does not mean that they are any different from the rest of us.
