Donut is absolutely correct. These pastries are not all necessarily made of dough, and the name refers to a type of pastry, not its origin.
One that argues it is a "Doughnut" should henceforth be required to refer to some as doughnuts and others as batternuts.
"Doughnut" is the grammatically correct spelling of the word.

I say Doughtnut. Because Doughtnuts are made out of DOUGH not DO.
