The public has the right to know about any public employee's communications whether past or present. However, the media should not report on communications in an effort to smear a person for no good reason. If something nefarious comes up, I would want to know as a taxpaying citizen. I support Sarah Palin and did not think they would find anything nefarious. It just made the smearers look stupid.
