Downtown dog debate: Should Santa Cruz allow dogs downtown?

My wife and I go downtown often with our dog, yeah we read the signs "No Dogs" but we have never been stopped by the police or anybody for that matter. We sit at a cafe drink and eat, the dog gets attention from everyone that walks by. Never had a problem. The bad smell that is by us is from the homeless person passed out on the street bench. We dine at animal friendly restaurants most of the time and would go downtown more often to eat if dogs were allowed. Lift the ban and do more about the real nuisance on Pacific Ave

Yeah, I do not trust pitbulls either as we had 3 unprovoked attacks towards my puppy. I wish Santa Cruz would outlaw pitbulls, they have in other US cities. Come on, they were bred to FIGHT other dogs!

Normally, I would have had no problem with dogs downtown---unfortunately, my dog (a medium sized terrier) has been brutally attacked TWICE within the last 2 years. The first time very nearly killed her and the second time the owner had the audacity to blame us! (His dog was roaming off leash while we walked ours down a city street). Oh! and if you're wondering, both times the other dogs were, yes you guessed it! the commonly renowned pit bull....ahhhh, what a lovely beast. I'd feel safer passing a mountain lion.

So, my vote is a big fat NO because I don't trust that people will take proper responsibility for their animals

This "POLL" does not mean a damn thing as you can vote many times for your side of the argument. This is a stupid waste of idiocy.

Most dogs are fine, but the dogs owned by the homeless drug addict are dangerous. They ruin it for everyone.

If im having lunch and a dog who is hungry comes by and looks at my meal, poof gone! Welcome to the real world. That dog does not give a hoot about you. Never will and will never happen. Besides stepping in his s h it when I leave!

I work downtown and seeing all the darling well-behaved pups trotting along beside their owners can really brighten my day!

The problem is not the dogs - the problem is the homeless people that are allowed to hang around downtown and act like jerks. I moved from Austin, TX and there were hundreds more homeless people there. The difference is that they are not aggressive like they are in Santa Cruz. Clean that up and you will get much more business to Santa Cruz. Oh yeah - and maybe you could worry about the drugs being sold on the railroad tracks instead of dogs in the woods or downtown. Clean up the drugs and you will clear out the people.

I can vote here over and over...this will NOT be a fair reflection of the community's feelings/opinions of having dogs downtown or not.

This is like American Idol, you can vote over and over, and it will come down to who will sit at a computer and vote for hours on end to out weigh the other side. LOL!

    Another great Sentinel Idea!

I am far less concerned about having dogs downtown than I am about many of the humans that frequent the area.

I take my Service Dog in town almost everyday she is trained, and well behaved. On her harness are the words Service Dog, and I carry paper's from my Doctor explaining how she helps me and the benefits I receive from her. I have been stop by officer's and when I explained to them that she is my service dog they were very Polite and ask me to have a great day. But I do have problems with unfit dog owners who take dogs that are aggressive to other dogs, and don't pick up their poop! I make sure Boo Boo has Pooped before we walk down Pacific and it would embarrass me if I didn't have a bag to pick it up! But I think ALL GOOD DOG OWNER'S should be able to bring their dog to Pacific IF they are RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER'S! With All Shots TAGS
