You need to just tax the 1% in Detroit to pay for the needs of the 99%, then everything will be cool.

What could possibly boost the economy for Detroit would be to entice, encourage and give incentives to former citizens willing to return. I know I would certainly come back if I was offered a job and a decent place to stay. Other places are doing it. Why not my home? I have been out here watching the hideous corruption stories and desired for something positive. Nothing beats a try folks.

And to make sure the idea worked, make it mandatory that 25% of all government workers pay automatically go into the lottery.

Just when you think politicians couldn't get any dumber, some genius comes up with the idea that a lottery can save Detroit Michigan. Lottery? Detroit? Instead of buying crack with their welfare checks the citizens of Detroit will blow it all on lottery tickets. How much longer will citizens of Detroit allow themselves to be exploited by their corrupt political leaders? Certain types of people don't ever wise up because it is easier to believe lies that make you feel good instead of facts that make you a better person. Adios chumps.

You know State lawmakers are really dumb. Detroit is sitting on large areas of blighted urban city scape, the same type of scenery Hollywood loves to use to depict sci-fi, futuristic, war torn Gothic and zombie films locations. Instead of bulldozing it why don't they offer to fence off sections that do not have necessary thru ways and get Hollywood studios to set up management offices and lots in Detroit for on-location filming? I mean what director would say no to firing tank rounds and machine guns into buildings for a battle scene with real buildings they do not have to pay to create? What about all the possible sets you can create inside all the different style of now useless or unused homes, offices, abandon theaters etc.? Oh yeah and don't give them the area for free allow them to lease it at long term favorable rates and with guarantees of a minimum of 15% local hiring on film sets for jobs other than actors and 15% of all business contracts associated with each picture to be made with Michigan based companies.

Seeing that a substantial number of Detroit residents live on some sort of assistance, there is lots of free money to go around. This is just like sending our tax money to this hell hole. Detroit has been dragging the state and particularly S.E Michigan down that hell hole for 40 years, we keep throwing money at it and the situation stays the same. The political machine keeps stealing the money, as does the employees. The real losers are the citizens of the city, however if Kilpatrick ran for mayor he'd be elected. That says a lot about the environment in the city all around.

That new Chrysler slogan, "Imported from Detroit," starts to make some sardonic sense. Detroit really does resemble a third-world country all unto itself. Such is the nature of a true liberal utopia.

That's the problem with the welfare state (city) sooner or later you run out of other peoples money... Why don't they raise taxes? Did they already tax eveyone out of their homes and businesses? Imagine that!

    A Lottery for Detroit?
    A Freaking Lottery?
    Run by the City? Yikes!
Talk about a chance to cook the books!
I wouldn't bet on those drawings being broadcast Live.
I can see it now, every winner will have a last name of Kilpatrick, Conyers, Young, Miller, Ferguson, Mercado, and on and on.
ROTFLMAO, Laughing so hard I'm crying
Oh Lord help me, I can't stop the tears!
    Seriously:
GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, AND LET ME KNOW HOW THAT WORKS OUT FOR YOU. he-he-heh

What a bad idea (city lottery). Promote a completely rigged and unfair gambling game where the city will siphon off around 25% of the gross (could even be worst). Everyone a loser! That's the Detroit way!

Good luck finding a Detroiter with enough extra income to buy a ticket.

  • Mike - 12 years ago

Nope...glad I got out in the 80s. Place is DOA and another scam is not going to do anything but give the morons that run the city more money to waste. Fools

Like all democratically-run areas, YOU HAVE A SPENDING AND ENTITLEMENT PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What makes people believe because a company offered them an opportunity to work for them, that when they quit, retire, or if the company closes that they DESERVE to be paid for the rest of their life by them? You produce NOTHING. You generate NOTHING. You chose to work for the company. Why couldn't you provide for yourself? PATHETIC. Always want something for nothing.

Casinos failed, downtown is and empty shell of vacant buildings and plenty of free parking. Detroit needs to burn itself down for the insurance money. Save for Lafayette's, I love them chili dogs!

I actually agree with Craig, if you were going to try something crazy with the quagmire that is Detroit, it seems like this is the time. The government owns tens of thousands of properties that are flatly not sellable at more than 10% their book value - Figure out a way to help it actually make sense to live in Detroit... Because right now it does not, and one more tax on stupid/poor/desperate people (this time, it's local - is that really better?)

Also, Michigan funding sources shows that as recently as 2006 (before the crash) the entire school aid budget for the state of michigan was 15 billion, with just .5 billion coming from the state lottery. This article states that the lottery brings in 45 billion, and 15 billion of that goes to schools - How is it possible that is not a significant amount of money? Does so little educational funding actually make it to the local level?

Good luck if you live in Michigan.

    I agree with Craig.

    The Casino's didn't help much.

Lottery off the housing! Get people back into Detroit.

  • Craig - 12 years ago

If the millions of dollars per year from the casino's doesn't help, how will a couple of hundred thousand dollars? With the tax base being gone the city needs to come up with more creative ways of raising money than taking it from lower income level people - harboring the hope that they can win the lottery and solve all of their problems.

A better lottery would be to give people one of the 1000's of abondoned homes and give them a tax credit to rehabilitate the home. Whether the person that fixes the home keeps it or sells it should not be an issue - so long as the home is back on the tax books, and revitalizing many blighted but still beautiful areas of the city.
