Did NFL Magazine get it right by naming Peyton Manning the 2011 MVP?

@Superdave4good and insider7...peyton was offered more money than what he is paid and turned it down telling them to pay him less and donate the rest to charity. When they said they cant do that he told them to use it on other players instead. He clearly is the mvp, he accounts for at least 10 wins per season. The entire team is built to fit his needs and cannot succeed without his presence. You can argue all you want about how important quarterbacks are to every team, but schaub goes out then leinart goes out and the texans still managed to win the division and a playoff game. Rodgers gets rested and Flynn has a bigger game than rodgers or favre ever did. Campbell gets hurt and the raiders are just as good as last year. Couple years ago brady gets hurt and the pats still go 11-5. Peyton is the Colts. Thats not true of any other qb in the NFL

Good lord, where is T.J. Simers when you need him? Hey, this is a game, alright? The MVPs are getting their butts shot overseas, so if the new mag wants to score some readership ratings with an outrageous contention, more power to 'em. It at least lightens up the No Fun League's approach to the fans. Remember them, Mr. Freeney? And if Peyton's absence has actually been that significant, it does somewhat lesson Mr. Freeney's performance this year, yes?

Ok ok, we all know that Ben has had his issues off the field; but on the field he has been nothing less than a tough leader. The man plays hurt and he has big numbers, but he is never considered for anything other than a police line up. The zebra's always try to put the game out of reach every time Pittsburgh plays, but Ben finds away to get through the bad calls. The man is tougher than Rodgers, Brady, Brees and Manning put together. Not one of the previous QB's mention could do what Ben did on Thursday Night. I am sure there is a few haters out there that will come back and say something about his actions off the field, no question it is abysmal, however on the field he is a leader, he is tough and he has proven his value has a player. Just saying!

I vote for Troy Aikman....he was lights during the playoffs and if he was still here, the Seattle and New York playoff games would have ended differently...

The Colts sucking w/o Peyton does not make him an MVP. What it shows is that he is payed too large a % of their cap space & either they can't afford to put additional quality players on the team or have just done a terrible job w their roster choices. An MVP is someone who makes the most valuable positive difference playing. Peyton as well as other players taking up such a large % of cap space are selfish, self-serving negatives to their team. Peyton should pay them back his signing bonus for this year's portion.

even tho i believe the award should only go to those who played the season, i mean, c'mon, it's AMAZING how bad the colts are without him. I always have said Peyton accounts for around 7 wins for his team, at least, and apparently i was a bit off. there are a TON of points to make about this team, and the fact is, you CANT ignore your backup in this NFL nor build your team and rely solely on one player, which that apparently (definitely?) have. so i voted 'yes' in this poll, because there are strong points to be made, but i ultimately believe the MVP must be a player who actually played a game in the season.

I vote Johnny Unitas as MVP for 2011... makes as much sense as Peyton.

  • J - 12 years ago

That's the biggest load of nonsense. You cannot be an MVP without playing a single snap. Hence the Player being part of MVP.

  • HappyKamper - 12 years ago

It is a HUGE stretch to think that Peyton is SO valuable to his team that his absence on Offense drastically impacts the playing abililty of every member of his team? What, does he also play defense? The reason that the Colts are not winning is because the TEAM didn't have competent back-up. As I understand the title MVP; isn't it Most Valuable PLAYER - (not most valuable peyton)

You guys make a great point, correct he hasnt played, he would only get an award called the MV of his team but leave out the P because its not fair to Brees and Brady and Rogers...all these guys that are playing, putting up great seasons, great numbers and putting their everyday work, sweat and tears everyday. No Manning shouldnt even be considered, the mere idea is an insult to the rest of the guys who are playing.

Following this absolutely absurd a-guy-who's-not-playing-is-having-the-best-year logic, let's also consider Jay Cutler (the Bears are 0-2 since he's been out) or even the boy named Suh (Lions have lost every game so far while he's out on suspension). This is just a blatant attempt by the NFL to generate interest in their stupid new magazine. They'll drive the game into the ground with their Byzantine rules, inconsistent fines and PT Barnum hucksterism.

Players are usually considered MVP candidates based on their positive contributions, on the field, during the season. Peyton Manning's positive contribution, ON THE FIELD, this season, has been NIL.

No question that he's arguably the MNP - "Most necessary player". It's highly unlikely that the absence of any other single player, on any NFL team, would set that team back as far as the Colts.

But League MVP for 2011 - absolutely not.

  • T - 12 years ago

If the Colts were responsible to have a competent backup this wouldn't even be an argument. With no Aaron Rodgers the Packers would still be in the playoffs. Because the Packers backup could be a starter on almost any other team in the league.

AARON RODGERS s/b the MVP (most valuable player) 10/0 that's says something and i am a PATRIOTS' FAN

  • Eaglefan1 - 12 years ago

It's an MVP award. P stands for player. Peyton isn't playing. It REALLY is that simple.

  • Insider7 - 12 years ago

Simply absurd. "Lee Harvey" Manning pushed very hard to get a huge new contract worth more than $18 Million per year even though he knew that he had a serious ongoing issue with his neck (the seriousness of which he obviously concealed from his team). After signing the contract, he goes out and gets a spinal fusion done, effectively ending his year and maybe his career. He grabs the money and robbed his team of an opportunity to use that money to sign other players/free agents. And he wanted this new contract because is was jealous of Tom Brady who was the highest paid player in the NFL at that time.

You call this valuable? Most people call this selfish, spiteful and fraudulent.

  • Wow people - 12 years ago

wow cmon people..aaron rodgers is having a phenomenal season and you honestly believe that a player should win this award that is on I.R.??? Just because the rest of his team sucks, doesn't mean hes an mvp. Every starting qb is valuable to their respective franchise..so losing one would be devastating for any team. A-rod is clearly having his best season so far, and you would screw him because of one teams misfortunes? You think the packers would be doing great without aaron rodgers? At that do ya think he would get mvp if that were the case??? Probly not...it's only cuz manning is the golden child of the nfl thats hes even considered. Don't screw over one player cuz anothers team sucks!!

  • chad - 12 years ago

Then Barry Sanders should have been the MVP for the next 10 years after he walked away, or maybe Dan Marino from the time he retired still to this day. He is a good player and they miss him, but that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard, a player out of the game is the MVP.

  • Mike Vick - 12 years ago

Rot in hell you douchebag Florio, I hope your faggot kid dies in a tire fire.

  • lambeauleap36 - 12 years ago

Are we picking the mvp of the NFL or just one franchise? If It's for the most missed by a franchise, put Reggie white on the list of candidates.

  • hjv - 12 years ago

Just what does the"p" stand for in mvp?! Just sayen

  • Luis Castilli - 12 years ago

Can you provide a Hell Yeah option? Two of the three options are negative.
