Was the Albert Pujols signing a good deal for the Angels?

As a Cardinal fan, I truly think that they had no intentions on re signing him. If so they would have done it two seasons ago. Do I blame Pujols. No, I know you would have done the same thing. Its hard to pass up 254 milloion dollars. I blame STL for being stubborn and thinking he was going to stay. Well it back fired. Cardinals need to realize that baseball is a business. I don't blame Pujols one bit for leaving. Congrats Angels.....Do me a favor and beat those damn Yankees......

I am a die hard Cards fan and live in MO.......I almost feel like I have been cheated on by my wife......I am not upset with Pujols at all and I wish him and the Angels well......You basically are getting Babe Ruth.....yes I said it......A player like this comes along once a lifetime......I am extremely disappointed in our ownership as this should have never been a relevant topic of conversation. He is one hell of a player and he can carry you guys to a championship.....he did that for us in 2006 and 2011. Good luck Phat Albert!!!!

I'm a Cards fan and sorry to see him go. Great player and, perhaps more importantly, great guy. I think it's a spectacular move by Anaheim if they have the contract front loaded. The first 5 years at 35 million and the last 5 at 15 makes perfect sense. I dare say that by 2017 15 mil a year for a very good player will be the norm. I'm not sure why the idiots in St Louis couldn't have locked him up a couple of seasons ago but that's a different rant. I feel sorry for Houston - they still get to face Albert on a regular basis!!

Kreg A., you are my freaking hero. The Anaheim Angels look all shiny right now with their new Pujols. I'm going to laugh when they miss the postseason and the Dodgers win it all in 2013!!! GO BLUE

Arod has been a joke after he signed that 275 million dollar contract with the rangers and the best thing that ever happened to the Rangers was the day he left town. That is a huge weight for any player to carry around anything bad that happens to the angels from now on will be blamed on the contract or albert. Huge mistake by the angels just wait and see and for cj wilson im a rangers fan and im glad to see him go.

As a Cards fan, I'm OK with Albert taking the 10 year deal elsewhere. For the wear his body has already undertaken (elbow issues, foot issues, wrist problems, leg problems), he'll never last the contract. The Angels can afford to eat the extra years when Albert is a shadow of himself, the Cards can't.

If he produces AND the Angels win over the next five years, it will be worth it to them.

If he turns into what Alex Rodriguez has become - a pretty good slugger, but not much else, making WAAAY too much, the Angels will be stuck with a lot of money and no way out of it. And ARod's current deal was signed at age 32...which is what Albert will be to start the season.

I wish him well. And I'm sure it will be a good deal for the Angels for awhile, but I see this ending badly.

A lot of sour grape comments from Card and Ranger fans. The Card fans wouldn't saying the deal for LA is bad, but it be ok if the Cards signed him, then all is good. Sure Freese is a good player and will become better, but he's no Pujols, but then again, who is?

For Ranger fans Re: ARod. Sure his contract with the Rangers was ludicrous at the time. But they had no pitching, zip, zero, nada and one guy can't do it all. The Angels on the other hand, have Weaver, Haren, Santana, and now C.J. Wilson and others. With the hitting of Pujols and up and coming guys like Trumbo and Trout along with Hunter and so on, the ERA will be still where is it among the best in the AL. The HR and RBI's will pickup and the Angels may have two or three 20 game winners.

The other problem with the Rangers is they are a small market team and had a hard time drawing fans along with limited pitching.

This poll is nonsensical, as BOTH options require YES answers and neither option gets to the answer of the core question: Was the Albert Pujols signing a good deal for the Angels?
The answer to the question is YES rather than ABSOLUTELY, but for reasons not illuminated in either answer option.

The angels need a catalyst and Albert is just that. On the other hand, it wasn't just the Cardinals that opened their wallets to Albert these past 11 years. It was especially the fans. He is a exceptional player. Can he do for the Angels what Babe did for NY Yankees? If not then Albert left a very caring city with the possibility of a unique legacy in favor of his agents greed. Yes, I said agent. Greed seems to drive people to sway others when doing the right thing at the right time considers others. The difference the Cardinals offered was peanuts. I am sorry St. Louis and Albert are both at a loss. But as always, I wish Albert and his family well and good health. Albert is a very good man.

Signing Albert Pujols will pay for itself over and over. New Fans, tee shirts, jerseys, TV contract and so on. Great Job Mr. Moreno and thankyou

  • Floyd W. Brown - 12 years ago

Genious move by Moreno. One has to pay the most to get the best of anything. Moreno has just done this. Increased ticket revenues, sell more concessions, more parking revenue s, etc. I wonder what percentage increase of season ticket holders will there be.

Moreno has set the table for the team. Will the Angels eat off it?

Pujols will be a fantastic addition as will Wilson however 10 years with a no trade clause is not a smart deal for the Angels. Given Pujol's level of talent and outstanding winning attitude, he will be a major asset for 5 years but after that we fans will be moaning and groaning about the team not going out and getting better players - remember all fans 'devotion' last only as long as the team is winning and we turn on players quickly! Still, living for today, the immediate future looks bright.

I am no fan of the Angels, so I hate to see them get stronger even if for a only a few years. That said, as a die hard Texas Rangers fan I think this deal works out better for the Rangers than it does for Anaheim (I will never refer to them as Los Angeles). That is too much payroll tied up with one player and it only hurts the overall operations of the team. I saw this up close with Alex Rodriguez, who put up MVP numbers in Texas that gave us nothing but last place finishes. All you have to do is look to the north, despite having the best hitter in baseball, the Giants could not improve until they were able to get rid of Barry Bonds. The Angels may very well find themselves in a similar predicament very soon. The AL will be able to easily pitch around him, it's not like you have Mike Napoli lurking on deck.

you guys know he has hella injuries right?? u angel fans are getting a really good player.. congrats to you guys... but we never needed pujols anyway.. we still have molina, FREEZE and the rest of the players...

BTW... 250 mil is way to much for a player.. there are starving children and homeless people all over LA... and you retards spend 250 mil on ONE PLAYER... you guys are a bunch of materialistic people... come to illinois and work in a factory like the rest of US HARD WORKING AMERICANS.... that 250 mil shouldve been spent on something else... like the homeless people... or given to charity... low income families etc...

Los Angeles is now Angels territory! I can't wait to see what Pujols brings to the Angels -- on and off the field! With Torii Hunter, Bobby Abreu, Jered Weaver and all the young stars that are on the Angels (Bourjos, Trumbo, Trout), this is team is a force to be reckoned with! To top it off, the Angels also added C.J. Wilson! Pujols may be too old in ten years but imagine how many quality players he will draw to the Angels over that time period! Can't wait for the season to start! GO ANGELS!

  • Joette - 12 years ago

You Angels fans have no idea what you're getting .. Albert will astound you with his work ethic and commitment to winning and it will drastically affect the rest of the team just as it did the Cardinals. Congratulations .. I hope you appreciate what you've got!

  • Peter - 12 years ago

This is as much about winning ALL of Southern California as it is winning the AL and World Series. It is a huge investment, but I like the ATTITUDE of wanting to win it all and not just being "competitive." Go Angels!

  • Pete - 12 years ago

As a Dodger fan all my life and living in Orange County I will now have a good reason to go see the Angels...I think it was a good move by the Angels...this player will have a good 8 or 9 years ahead of him and by the time his contract ends there'll be a bunch of players making much more than he'll be making...nice move Moreno...
