Adopt---don't shop! The DCSPCA has lots of dogs and cats waiting for their forever home.

Does anyone realize that 10,000 healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are put to sleep EVERY DAY ??!! Adopt a shelter pet and safe a life. Puppy mills are horrific and should be shut down. Stay away from pet stores !

We looked for a small breed dog at the SPCA, unfortunately at that time they only had Pit Bulls and large dogs.

We then took a ride to Danbury, CT. and visited "PUPPY LOVE Pet Store". In the future I would ONLY buy from this store. The animals were healthy, clean and kept in extremely large cages, max in the cage was three puppies and they were from the same litter. They had just moved to this store (now about 4 yrs ago) so they would have a fenced in area where the dogs could run outside. Before we purchased our pup, we were shown they area where they were bathed and groomed, we also were given a chance to play with her privately.

After purchase, we were given the the name and address of our Breeder and a post card to send the breeder with ay comments or areas of concern we might have.

Truthfully, since we purchased her, we have only been back once, so I am not sure if and when the out door area was finished, I just know they were working on one.

The owners run the store and are there almost all the time and they are not a chain but a privately owned shop. We were given the standard contract and told to take her to a Vet with 24 to 48 hrs. They had a Vet down the road, but we chose to bring her back home and have her checked by our Vet.

Previously I have purchased from breeders but found "Puppy Love" to be as high quality and actually cleaner than one of the breeders I purchased from. Puppy Love was set up to have a specific employee that just made sure the cages were clean and the animals fed. That is all this person did all day, clean cages and give the pups clean water & food.

Puppy Love gets ***** stars from us.

Emma, the puppies in pet stores all come from puppy mills. They're not "breeders' rejects". Real breeders -- reputable, reliable breeders -- know MOST of their puppies won't be show quality. The ones that aren't are sold as pets -- BY THE BREEDER, never through a pet store. No good breeder would EVER send their puppies to a pet store!

My daughter purchased (now lives with me) our Lola ----apparent "pure breed" from Puppies and Kittens in Wappingers. Disgusted on what we later learned. Within a week we were at the ER Animal Hospital in Wappingers. Lola had a horrible case of pneumonia. As in medical terms her lungs were totally whited out. She was so close to death. A coworker of mine said "don't bring her back to the store for an exchange (I don't know how anyone could do that with a pup you fall in love with). She said these stores have been caught discarding these deathly sick pups in the dumpsters. Thats sick. We worked like crazy with Lola to get her better...putting her in a steamy room then heavily banging on her little chest to help clear her lungs.
When we initially brought her to the vet they found stitches in the crease of her back leg. Neither the vet or the Humane Officers (who came to see Lola when we called ASPCA) could figure out what these would have been from and also noted to us the material used does not even get used anymore. I agreed as I work in the health care field and never see this used for sutures.
When we returned to Puppies and Kittens with the vet bills we spoke to a young girl behind the desk. I was absolutely appauled that she knew exactly what papers to pull from her forms to fill out. She showed no emotions what so ever. We were told to bring her to "his" vet in Mahopac to continue her treatment. While in the waiting room we heard the vet say to someone "why does he keep sending people to me ?" There was another pup that was in the waiting room with the same thing and yes the same breeder papers American Kennels.
Lola is now doing well but has problems with her front legs from time to time where her wrists bend outward.
We have learned a lesson and try to educate others. People need to realize that from the breeder down to the stores are responsible for this cruelty.
I try to have people understand that if you buy from them it only promotes this and I understand how bad you feel seeing these pups and you want to rescue them. 4,000 dollars plus later is not saving them it is putting you in a hole and having them breed one more to fill your pups place. Don't do this to yourself your children or these living breathing animals. Don't even step in the stores as they are unseeingly disease ridden.
    Thank you for your time..

Many of the animals ending up at pet stores are breeders' rejects. They are the littermates that don't look like they'll be show quality.

Every pet I've ever lived with, dog or cat, has been a rescue. There are so many that need homes...save them and prevent the suffering of animals used only as potential breeders. And that goes for show animals--my mother decades ago showed her dog and I met some of the people of that world. Their goal is to breed and sell so the dogs so from what I saw--they live in a home, yes, are called 'pookie' and 'darling', yes, but they live much of their lives in a cage because the female(s) are in heat or are being shipped by plane to breed and the male(s) in the house must be in a cage to be away from the female. It all looks good on TV but as usual there's another side to that world.

My dog was not sick but was determined not to be a pure breed which is what I was told I was sold. DNA said "predominantly" the breed I was sold. Just went to court over it. A friend bought a puppy the same time I did from the same store. She is an elderly lady. The dog died within a week from parvo, pneumonia, inflammation of the intestines. She had to fight to get vet bills paid and her money back. The store blocked her phone number so she had to use her granddaughter's phone to call the store. She had to call the local police to go to the store with her to deliver the vet's records. It was horrible. My second dog was adopted from a local SPCA. We couldn't be happier with him.
