A LOT of you guys are mis-understanding. they just want to know what your doing. For example, on XBox and PlayStation when you look at a friend it will say, "Cole is playing MW3 infected on Dome" So it would be like "Cole is playing single player on his windows 7 computer, he has been playing for 30 min" THAT'S BASICALLY IT! It's not going to be like, here is Cole' s address and bank account.

  • Joseph - 14 years ago

Tracking my internet usage, no. However, this is minecraft. What is in there that needs to be private? How could any of this information be used maliciously? As long as it doesn't affect performance, I can't see why anyone would be against it (unless all they do is build giant penises or something :) Anyone want to enlighten me on what you would want to keep private in minecraft?

  • rockplus - 14 years ago

@Jak what a n00b, you cant track piratees because the play on pirate servers!
    LOL EPIC FAIL

  • Jak - 14 years ago

All you pirates sound scared! Ha.
Apple are the guys you want to be wary of. Mojang have always been extremely honest and straight with us. If they want to record anonymous data about how I play their creation, and display that information publically for us, so that they can make this great game perfect... that is fine by me.
Mojang are real people, not an evil, greedy, large puplication organization (EA, Activision - I'm looking at you). Just my two cent.

  • fearsyth - 14 years ago

    1. Make it optional.
    2. Keep it off by default.
    3. Make it very obvious what you are tracking.
    4. Don't spam requests to opt in. Ask once in a pop up. If user selects no, do not pop up anymore.
    5. Additional pop ups for those opting in if something changes about it. This way they are notified of the changes, and have to opt in again.

  • brodiddy - 14 years ago

It should be optional, not that hard to make it optional. I think it would be best as a checkbox in the launcher somewhere.

  • TL - 14 years ago

Even more obvious would be to add the POSSIBILITY of tracking the data on the Minecraft options screen.

  • Darren - 14 years ago

I dont mind and look at the votes it looks like it will be added. I would though like to see the option to opt out if players wanted to.

  • TechieTypeGuy - 14 years ago

A lot of drama going on in this thread. I would just like to add my two pence and request that it be OPT-IN. By default it would not track anything however on first run, it would prompt you to allow the anonymous data collection. This would be a great solution to appease the majority.

  • Kirra - 14 years ago

Anyone who says this is bad, shut the hell up, this is no invasion of rights in the slightest, it's to help improve an already great game, and this opt-in/out crap is stupid, it's anonymous information, not gathering personal information like Facebook, as far as I'm concerned, anyone disagreeing with this is: A- A child molester who thinks they might get caught B- ignorant 6 year old C- overreacting idiot.

  • Sarah Cooper - 14 years ago

The development team having access to that kind of information would be excellent! I'd be very happy to be part of that.

Imagine how useful it would be if crash info was automatically sent to the team? My game has crashed before, but I have no idea how to go about saying what I did (sometimes I can just be wandering around a cave, I'll move into another chunk and BAM, que crash to a black screen.)

You've won lots of brownie points by asking the community what they think beforehand too. People usually let you sit in their seat on a train if you ask them, or move over so you can sit too!

  • Anonymous - 14 years ago

Make it opt-in, or get fucked.

  • Jay Robftw !!!11! - 14 years ago

It's not a problem to me. It would be better to make a survey to the minecraft-accounts (like someone else said) and make it optionally.

I can tell you now :

I'm playing Minecraft 2 hours a day, playing mostly Multiplayer on both, windows 7 32 - and 64bit. That's all. Neither more, nor less.

  • Praseek - 14 years ago

Notch - with all due respect - do it and I'm gone. I'm ok with implementing this as an option you can turn on or off (for those who want to do it). If it will be permanently turned on then: "I'm sorry. I thought we were ment to be together. It is not your fault, it is mine. It's time to move on."

Ps.: It is never my fault!

  • 123house123 - 14 years ago

lot of you are saying that i haven't stopped playing minecraft for a mouth i have and if i can prove it i will and you are saying that why rage over this if Facebook or yahoo and even Google
i don't use anything that i know is and/or might be tracking me i don't even use Google i use a search engine that dose not track you in anyway and BTW i can read Hater Hater a

  • Lagator - 14 years ago

    I love this game...
But it should not argue about that game...

    : I

  • Lagator - 14 years ago

Discussed do not understand why, but things are not resolved well.
Why is a game Minecraft excellent is his creation and his game ..

  • Moo Man - 14 years ago

I voted yes- but just know that you HAVE to make this opt-in. Non-negotiable.

  • Human Representative - 14 years ago

I apologize for all the drama. The collective intelligence of the species I represent has been notably low recently due to nation wide cases of dehydration and sleep-deprivation.

I belive your innocent little info tracker for the application that you designed would work best as an opt-in service. That way people who feel that their privacy is being invaded can focus their attention on more important things, like facebook games and the most recent hollywood development.

I am rather pleased that you asked permission in a very visible format. Every other company has always tucked away thier data agreements into a corner of the Terms of Service, and many of which are far from anonymous.

  • lulz - 14 years ago

    @xalauc
facebook....oh yea that site that i gave false info to so that it was slightly harder to trace me

  • a fan - 14 years ago

The only objections could be privacy and piracy. Just allow opt-outs. As for pirates, well, let 'em lose!

  • xalauc - 14 years ago

Just to make that clear Notch is NOT asking if they can track the same amount as Facebook, he is asking if they can track the same as any basic website.

  • xalauc - 14 years ago

It never fails to amaze me how little people know, you do know that most website track your progress through them whether you want them to or not.

Lets compare this the simply way.

A normal website (this poll for example - it has google analytics) collects information about you in regards to:
    the pages you visit
how long you spent on this page
    your IP address
which country / city you live in
if you are a return visitor or not
    what browser you are using

    Facebook
    HAS your D.O.B.
HAS your first and last name
    HAS your school history
    HAS your work history
HAS your friends and how they relate as well as how good of a friend you are to them through related date.
    HAS what sites you like
HAS personal conversations with friends through facebook messages
HAS your photographs of your latest holiday, which means the destinations of the places you like.

Notch is ASKING IF Mojang can implement similar if not less tracking that any basic website has (this poll included)

    O.K rant over.

  • Brian - 14 years ago

Personally, Notch, I think if you do do this, don't have it attempt to connect every so often. Have it build up a log that it can send at the end of the game session; This way it just sends a blurb of data at the end rather than risking constant interference with gameplay through computer slowdown (And to the naysayers, there are already some people who have a hard time playing it on minimal settings due to having older computers. I used to be one until I upgraded a year ago.)

  • WhiteReaper - 14 years ago

I find it funny that people are raging over this.
If you really don't want mojang to collect anon. data here's what you do
    1. Figure out what the ip address/hostname is of the server that collects the data
    2. write it down or other wise remember it
    3. Open up your hosts file
    4. Add that hostname/ip address to it
    5. Save
    6. ???
    7. Profit

  • Anonymous - 14 years ago

    heres what would be said.

    >I downloaded the client
    >I run the latest stable version
    >I play on Windows 7 x64 (with JRE XuX
    >I have Zombe's and TMI installed.
    >i play single player survival
    >i do not frequently go above the old 128 block limit. (or x new feature)
    >program crashed because of X function

thats pretty much all that notch would ask for. any problems with that. and notch, do make this optional and if the players internet connection is unresponsive, make the program stop operating.

  • uyhfnfchuyd - 14 years ago

well it does sound cool but what if you get in to private stuff that your not supposed to be in but it still sound cool but i'm still with no.....

  • Hater Hater a - 14 years ago

    123house123 - 2 hours ago
Well, its officially 1 mouth since I have played minecraft all because this poll. good job mojang!

Your such a dumb sh!+. You did'nt stop playing for that. If you did you can't read.
    Good job 321shack321.

  • Hater Hater. - 14 years ago

You know alot of games just say STFU and do it anyways. Notch asked you and is not going to do it with out your condolences, so for the people acting like hes already implemented this, your all paranoid and need to stop watching 12 monkeys and chill out. 12 monkey rules BTW .

  • 123house123 - 14 years ago

Well, its officially 1 mouth since I have played minecraft all because this poll. good job mojang!

  • PhoenixStar117 - 14 years ago

I think this is a GREAT idea!!

TO HATER= This will help Mojang fix bugs and such. It will allow them to know if Minecraft doe's not work on certain types of computers, might be able to see if minecraft crashed because of a mod you installed and be able to make MC more compatible, the list goes on!!!

  • Atrophy - 14 years ago

Yea just put a option in the launcher to toggle real time data on and off that way the people with the foil hats can keep there sanity.

  • user - 14 years ago

    I WANT MY MONEY BACK

  • BlueNinja74 - 14 years ago

To everyone saying this is an invasion of rights(I'm looking at you, nick.) I have one thing to say:IT'S NOT! I cannot see how a simple record of time played and operating system used can be taking away our right to privacy. I'm fine with saying I play Minecraft anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 hours at a time or that I use Windows Vista to play. I won't say any more.

  • Jason - 14 years ago

People really don't get the anonymous part.. There is NO privacy issues with Notch knowing you use Mac, or knowing that you have been playing for 25 minutes.

  • A. Nony Mouse - 14 years ago

it is ok as long as it is opt-in

+it would be nice if you in options can click on something to see an example of what would be sent.

(btw, it is not necessary to connect every ten minutes, it could instead collect the data in memory and send all of it when you exit minecraft.)

  • Dudemanperson - 14 years ago

Looking through the comments, I don't think the people against this read the whole blog post. Either that, or they have absolutely no idea what anonymous means. Nobody is going to be able to see whatever your personal information is or even what stats are attached to you. Also, playing on a lagtop, I understand the concerns of people about it causing performance issues. However, unless someone decides to be an ass and make the file unnecessarily huge, it shouldn't be an issue.

  • Thisisnotmyrealname - 14 years ago

    @nick

This is NOT an invasion of rights. He hasn't even done anything, just asking, so if you think a question is an invasion of rights, your wrong.

I think this is a good idea fow the game, and for those who don't like it, but it proceeds anyways- just play in offline mode. its the same as online, unless you're playing multiplayer, which I doubt they would take information from. There are just too many people on a server so they probably can't take information anyways.

  • Rootleak - 14 years ago

I wish you guys would step it up a little bit and get this information to help with anti-cheats.

I'm a first time server owner and setting it up was a complete nightmare. I'm willing to give you guys all the information you want if you can simply stop the cheating and make anti-griefing easier.

  • Treble Cleft - 14 years ago

Short and simple: Yes. No opt-in or opt-out.
If you don't agree with me, I honestly don't care. If it's that big a damn deal, go ahead, stop playing minecraft, you've already payed for it. (I'd like to see you people TRY not to play minecraft XD)

  • will3032840 - 14 years ago

Also, what I meant to say in previous comment, also put big opt-in / opt out button on login page. :D

  • will3032840 - 14 years ago

    "Charlotte - 6 days ago

Quite often the minecraft servers are down for login and we can't play. This would make that happen more often by putting more load on the servers.

That's my only problem with it so I voted no."
You have got a point there, but what if they made the tracking server a separate server? than it would not affect login at all :D.
Send this idea to notch for me please!
    :D

  • keco185 - 14 years ago

I think you should make it where you can toggle the sending of session info. This way everyone is happy.

  • Steen - 14 years ago

It is in no way invading your right to privacy, since no personal data is sent and you actually agree to a lot more than you think if you read the Privacy Policy and the Terms and Conditions

  • MonkeyWithAnAxe - 14 years ago

    Just as long as:
    1. It doesn't affect game play in any way (lag, network, etc).
    2. We can turn it off (change our minds).
    3. We get the option to see exactly what it is we're uploading before we upload it.

If all the above are met, I'm cool with it. Might help improve the game too.

  • nick - 14 years ago

    Invasion of rights

  • Psychotonikum - 14 years ago

You have to be precise what data will be send. It's no problem for me to give out session times ... or what I am doing in the MC world (if you really want to know where I build my new phallus ... ^^)

BUT .... chatlog would be a very sensitiv and private thing. Same with texts on signs.
Opt-out is a must have for all the people who want to live on in their believe that they can hide from the mass surveillance ...

I really appreciate that you just ask before you do it. I assume I can speak for many players that under this circumstances we are willing to help you collecting data and making Minecraft to one of the top games of this century.

  • DenysPro - 14 years ago

Aoron I tottally understand what your saying you see I had the pirat coppy of minecraft i could play on cracked servers and singleplayer i got my game updated every time the updates would come out,But i wannet more i wanet to be abble to play on every server and wannet my private skin. Now im a happpy owner of a Minecraft Key haha Thank You Noch and I say yes you may view my Data as long as it stays inbetwen me and you :) Thanks and have a wonderfull day.

  • RadicalDustin - 14 years ago

sure i really don't care if notch watches me while i'm maken redstone machines or building a house or even my achievements my achievements also reset after awile so i realy don't care just ass long ass i don't get viruses or my pc is hacked

  • ONLY WITH OPT-IN - 14 years ago

I am against being forced into being tracked.
(No I don't pirate, JFC people, I am just a very private person.)

I understand the value of knowing how people are using your product,
BUT people should not be forced to tell you.

If I can see EXACTLY what is being transmitted,
AND I'm confident that it is not secretly transmitting other info,
AND the opt-in / opt-out options are easily found - as a giant glowing button on the log in screen,
I would be okay with this.

  • Aoron - 14 years ago

i say do it... as for the opt in/out thing, it would be nice but i could care less. also those who pirate dont really have to worry about anything since its only seeing who is online and for how long. i dont think notch minds at all anyways that people pirate. he knows that every game has them and a lot of people who do pirate end up buying the game at some point. i could be wrong though. Notch pls tell us what u think about those who pirate minecraft... its hard to tell if u dislike them or not...

  • sazzlysarah - 14 years ago

Yes. With an Opt-In option. Users should choose to Opt-In, instead of needing to Opt-Out if they don't want their data shared.

  • Looking at the replies - 14 years ago

Seeing the types of arguments given by those who say yes and don't want an opt out option ... Do you really want to be guided by the idiot masses.

  • Shadowhumper - 14 years ago

I would trust Notch with my ass [♥], but if they're taking data from my minecraft, could it be possible that it might cause performance issues? I ask such a stupid question only because my Minecraft lags at 15-20fps at the lowest setting. T_T

  • Lucas - 14 years ago

Go for it mr. Persson! =D

  • erik - 14 years ago

That's my only problem with it so I voted no.

  • Alex - 14 years ago

I think tracking would be better with... herobrine because he could follow servers and that stuff!

  • sam - 14 years ago

I cant see a problem with it as long as it does not cause lag or crashing.

  • leon - 14 years ago

u uuuuuuuuuuuu should w\AY waywaywayway add herobrine again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he was epic

  • mclmatty - 14 years ago

Yea sure, add tracking but if there is a strong enough disagree with it then still go a head but create an opt out button. I would LOVE to see this data as its pretty interesting. Maybe display it on http://www.minecraft.net/stats or something :)

  • Lololoroloololol - 14 years ago

I don't like this, people that use pirated edition woould be afraid to do so and maybe, they wouldn't use it anymore.
As many, I think, I bought the game after playing with the pirated edition.

  • Shaidon - 14 years ago

Our life is already being watched by others, so why not?
Nup, I'm not some "crazy" conspirationist, I'm just not deluded as you.

  • Shourin - 14 years ago

    Only with op-out.
I don't like this. It sounds too invasive. You can get the same info with a survey built into the minecraft user accounts. This way you get the info you want w/o people feeling invaded.

  • zethreal - 14 years ago

I've seen a few people mention that it should be 'opt-out'. While I would definitely be OK with you tracking my data, I think it should be 'opt-in' or even have a list of what data you would like to obtain & have each item independently set.

  • Richard - 14 years ago

I think it's fine. But for those concerned with privacy, there should be an opt out in your profile details. I've found most people are more than willing to share their information if asked politely (ie: twitter, facebook) so the same willingness should be harnessed in the game by being able to opt out if we want. That way it gives US a feeling of control.

  • Savador - 14 years ago

you should be able to see what we build (if chosen to let to) of to see how they react to things

  • Warlaan - 14 years ago

    2. People who use limited bandwidth (even though they wouldn't notice it.)

How about people with 0 bandwith? It's bad enough that there is no proper offline mode.
With a non-optional logging feature it might not even be possible to play offline with a workaround.
And no, I am not a pirate, I just happen to live in the countryside where there was no decent internet up to a few month ago.

  • kyle - 14 years ago

who is herobrine is he real leave me a email message

  • First knight - 14 years ago

Most of the people complaining are most likely pirates,
But even if this was added, it would be easy to by-pass for a pirate anyway, so i don't know why you're crying.

But yes it should be a tick box as you login, because some people may worry about:
    1. the Holy notch spying on there porn sites they visit and such.
    2. People who use limited bandwidth (even though they wouldn't notice it.)

I say: I totally agree! Pirates are everywhere!

  • Marx - 14 years ago

If theres an option to opt out of this, I'm all for it. If there isn't, I'm not comfortable with this and I do not approve.

  • Alex Kopen - 14 years ago

I don't see why this would be a problem. A lot of games already do this automatically. For those people who like to get hyped up about stuff like this, because it makes them feel better or something, just created an option to turn this feature off in the settings.

  • xilyflob - 14 years ago

I think that its a fine idea, though i think that with most things like this it should come with an opt-out, not necessarily for privacy, but perhaps for performance. Not everyone has these amazing computers that some have, or the server that they enjoy playing on may not be the highest performing one. Yes, i realize that it is a tiny ammount of data being pulled, but if you have 20 people on a server and the data all gets pulled every 10 min, it could cause some lag issues for all. Just a thought.

    Minecraft Addict wrote:

    1. If you believe that the client knows if it was paid for or not, what do you think is the point of having to log in to the server every time you start the game?

    2. Storing the IP in combination with facts about the person behind that IP is illegal in many countries. You don't want to know what our life would be like if that was not the case.

3.Blocking everyone with a given IP... that sounds like fun, given that most internet providers give you a new IP everytime you log in. So blocking several IPs would be like license roulette.

  • derpy - 14 years ago

it would make the game lag even more for worse PC owners... no thanks :/

  • Joe - 14 years ago

I think you should make it an opt-in thing so people can decide whether or not they would like to send you data. (I would personally opt-in)

  • Randy - 14 years ago

If you read my other comment you will see why the spellcheck for IPads sucks.

  • Randy - 14 years ago

I have a five year old computer with finite bandwith and anti virus software that always uses more than 170,000 kilobytes of data but minecraft still runs fine on it with render distance set to far and fancy graphics and smooth lighting tuned on so stop bitching about how you think that 1 kilobite of data being transferred every ten minutes will slow-down your computer.

  • John - 14 years ago

Don't even make it opt out ( for all the people saying it should be opt *in* - you're crazy. Nobody would bother and this would not be useful for Mojang).

Anyone whining needs to wake up. Minecraft already *could* collect any data they feel like and you wouldn't know. The fact that you trust them not to be sneaking personal data *now* means that you should trust them not to take personal data they didn't tell you about *later*.

I really wish more people understood how computers work.

  • chucky4real - 14 years ago

I think that the creators have managed to do an awsome job of creating agame that almost anybody can enjoy and make there own. The concept of the game, that you can play and personalise it the way YOU want to play is a the heart of why the game is so succesful and every update seems to hit the nail on the head as far as giving the minecraft community the improvements they want without any feedback to the programer other than public forum (which can be hit-and-miss at best due to the fact that usually, it's the loudest persons response that influences content of the update rather than the communitys opinion as a whole). The point of what i'm saying is despite the flaws in there feedback system they (the programmers) have delivered on update pretty-well perfectly, so i'm excited to see/experience the future of the game when they are actually able to analise player likes, dislikes and habits on a broader (and non-biased) format such as anonymous data tracking. This is big brother, but FOR the the people. :D

I cannot come up with a compelling reason for why you shouldn't be allowed to track anonymous usage.

You could also easily make it an opt-in if there are enough conspiracy theorists who are against it (see: Nathan614).
