I personally think this is a very good idea, though you guys really should make it an opt-in feature to please the raging masses.

  • Jason - 14 years ago

I wouldn't mind the tracking data like that as long as it can be turned off. Also it would have to not be required to run the game. We play Minecraft over LAN only. It's already a pain in the butt for everyone to have to connect to the internet, log in, then get off the internet and connect to the LAN. Then if anyone has a crash or freeze or anything they have to do it all over just to get back into the game. Whatever you do, do not make this game rely even more on the internet in order to play. Please!

  • Dae Tosser - 14 years ago

I voted 'yes.' But why would I care (shrugs.)

If collecting the data can help make the game better and steer the development of possible new content in a populist direction: Great!

If the data is going to be collected for the mere sake of having a displayed statistic on the webpage; 'Numbers of blocks of wood punched by players wordwide in the last 10 minutes...' because that would be awesomely cool, I would suggest respecting the people participating in this poll who are disinclined to acquiesce, and refrain from the scheme.

  • abomb07 - 14 years ago

I do not agree with any of this cuz im a major griefer and i dont want notch to no when i grief

  • thebert2211 - 14 years ago

i agree with skie except i would add a comment botton so we could suggest new content for the game. (yes i know i could go to "get satisfaction" but i always found that site hard to navigate)

  • Jonathon Bost - 14 years ago

If you do this, please make the game free.

  • Niwith - 14 years ago

That would be great if mojang could base the game off what we like.
The only reason it could be bad is if someone did not buy the game, and illegally downloaded it.

  • bjjjg - 14 years ago

I would agree with Skie. Ask the people at patching or installing the game at first time.
Otherwise I think its sounds very Evil for me. like I hear facebook.

Make a option to turn that "shit" (I call it shit :P) off and I will agree.

    Thanks for reading bjjjg

  • Skie - 14 years ago

For the improvement of the game and to keep you all up to date about your own game: Yes.

But I agree with the masses. It should be made known that this option exists and should actually be defaulted to "off" at first. OR it should be a prompt when firing up the game with this patch for the first time. "Do you want to send usage statistics for Minecraft on this computer? Y/N?"

Make it in plain sight; or better yet present it like the update screen. "Do you want to update Minecraft?" "Yes, Update" or "Not now". You have no other options at that screen and it should be the same for this addition. Players can't skip it and not answer it. They HAVE to say "Yes send data" or "No, don't." So no one can complain that "I can't find it!" or "I didn't know!"

A link to the reason why would be helpful, too. For those curious. I think it's an awesome idea and I really appreciate you asking us before going forward with it.

It's an improvement for both single player and multiplayer Minecrafters alike.

  • shadow1w2 - 14 years ago

Only cause you asked so nicely.

"Have a four pixel green block that blinks in the corner when data is uplaoded and a thank you note at save and quit" (explained below)

One idea though might be to have an optional "data is being sent to mojang" icon that pops up to let us know what its doing.
Set it on by default but optionally be turned off.
Just a little tiny thing in the corner that lets the users in the know know whats going on without scaring away casual users.
Big Brother stuff has everyone a little paranoid these days so something obvious but subtle so it doesn't feel forced.

I'm going to suggest a four pixel large green block that blinks in the corner.
Also a thank you note when you save and quit or exit the entire game.... better save and quit since its nice to just exit a game than get a prompt after it.
Say when the boss is looking over your shoulder..... dont need a thank you note there....

Anyway, nice of you to ask, most companies are often rude about and think we owe them information.
So you get plenty of kudos for doing things the honest way.
Thats what we like to see these days :3

  • Ludo0777 - 14 years ago

The people who are complaining are secretly worrying that people will find out they haven't bought the game.

  • Dan - 14 years ago

If it does exactly what you say and does not take considerable amount of resources (bandwith, performance) i`m all for it, with the discouraged option to turn it off of course ;-D.

  • John - 14 years ago

I would love this data to be collected because I'm curious myself and would hope some of it would be publish. Like how many people are playing single player vs multiplayer and how many people have beat the game on hard mode :-)

As long as my shopping habits are not on display, I'd be happy to give any info that helps the team tailor and tweek the game.

  • DevoGnome - 14 years ago

I'd love to help out... it would tailor my addiction... but I agree with Snoux about 300 comments ago... send the data at the end of session or beginning of next session (or at login with mc.net)
single player is fine and pretty smooth, but there are already freezes and lags in SMP, simply because of the connection. we don't need another one every 10 minutes.

Also for those playing SMP, the SERVER should track and send the player data (it could send once a day or any time when the server is idle.

opt-in/opt-out... does it really matter. take all the data you want, but if you start using it for targeted advertising or spam we'll make sure a creeper gets you in the middle of the night!

  • Dan - 14 years ago

In theory, it's a great idea. In practice - no way.

    Why?

    Because I enjoy SINGLE-PLAYER SURVIVAL.

Single-player games is a lost art. Minecraft was a ground-breaking masterpiece, literally and figuratively.

Now I see it spinning off into the wrong direction where so many other games have gone; the world of multiplayer...

When Notch stepped down, I believe Jeb said the next thing he wanted to work on was some public API for making it easier to create multiplayer add-ons or whatnot. I could be wrong, but I thought that's what he said.

As someone who has disdain for games that focus solely on the multiplayer experience, and knowing that this generation of kids only play games they're multiplayer, your statistics are going to be skewed in their favor, and I'm going to be out of a once fantastic single player experience.

Thanks for reading. And RIP Minecraft.

  • Sonicfangamer2 - 14 years ago

    Sounds good.

  • Aya - 14 years ago

One more thing: I didn't actually vote because I don't think it's evil, but I don't think I'd do it often. I think that's where a lot of people are getting hung up on people saying "no, its evil!".

I'm not paranoid. I paid for the game back when it was in Alpha, and I'm only running optifine. I barely play online and when I do its only with a select few people. I play for five minutes to an hour or two every few days, always on peaceful. I honestly wouldn't opt-in all the time to this because I don't think my data is that entertaining. I just don't think I'd opt-in to something like this. Just like how I don't opt-in to news letters and coupon lists.

  • Aya - 14 years ago

I want an option to opt-in or out. Give us a setting option, and I'd be cool with this.

I do think it would be very interesting to have a monthly statistics posting somewhere. Where we can see how long people are on at any given point, how long people play over a monthly period, how many people place on hardcore/peaceful/easy/normal/hard/creative, on servers or off, and such.

  • Bolzoo - 14 years ago

Well, I'm fine with this. About people saying "Nothing is anonymous DERP" they just didn't read your post. It clearly says what type of information you want and if you wanted their log in information you could just take it from the data base.

Sure, this info can't really be useful in any more sense than know what game mode we're playing so make a new poll when you can give us the exact info about what you want to record.

  • Smile - 14 years ago

    @iandioch

    Do I detect some 26bslash6?

  • Person that wants to stop the retards - 14 years ago

People shouldn't even vote no. I even saw some retarded mom saying she wouldn't give Notch "permission" to do this. Paranoid fuck. There are already shitloads of gamecompanies doing this in other online games. Notch doesn't need permission to do this, he could do it if he wanted to. The reason he doesn't, is because he wants to know if it would be ok with the players. Which it is, even for the no-voters. They just don't know it.

  • Jono - 14 years ago

This sounds evil, but I'm cool with that because it's Notch.

  • Mineore - 14 years ago

I suggest it should be a setting in options, so people who want it on can turn it on, those who don't can turn it off. Everybody wins.

  • Martan - 14 years ago

@Rex you can turn the tracking off in the settings. You don't have to participate

  • Rex - 14 years ago

I use Linux and i will block you and your stupid Community ;-)

  • iandioch - 14 years ago

    @Markus
I hope you know, i'm expecting pie charts.

  • Megadud - 14 years ago

I feel like you could record my screen constantly, and even have my username with it. I don't see what you could possibly do evil by knowing my username, and my play style. I might feel a bit embarrassed about play time logging (way too high...) but you should be able to know that as is.

    DEATH TO SOPA!

  • Notch - 14 years ago

There is no such thing as anonymous data.

  • Chris - 14 years ago

who wants Any company traking them, i say this idea is VARY Evil!

  • Ryan - 14 years ago

I love this idea when do u thik it will be put into game??

  • Markus - 14 years ago

    public String Notch;
    public boolean braggingRights;
    public String anonymousData;

    if (Notch.tracks(anonymousData) {
    braggingRights = true;
    }

  • Nicklas - 14 years ago

I think this a great idea to see and adjust the game play of minecraft and can help you develop new ideas and features in the game and i have no problem with my game play being watched and observed for development. In my opinion you shouldn't even have this poll and just apply it to the game. Anyways Notch have a great day and happy gaming, and game development.:)

  • I masturbate to notch - 14 years ago

I don't think you should even have this poll, i think you should just change the website so when you go to the "profile" tab at the top of the web page it has an option allowing you to track (or not to track) and take screen shots every ten minutes and stuff, or you could put an option saying no (obviously only if you bought the game)

  • i masturbate to notch - 14 years ago

I don't think you should even have this poll, i think you should just change the website so when you go to the "profile" tab at the top of the web page it has an option allowing you to track (or not to track) and take screen shots every ten minutes and stuff, or you could put an option saying (obviously only if you bought the game)

  • kyneff - 14 years ago

At least he asked before doing it. lol

  • RFairney - 14 years ago

Game Session Time - Many people reload their game for various reasons, including updating plugins, or clearing memory, How about tracking these gaps or restarts, to see if there are issues?
Could also be interesting to track the gamemode the player is in (Creative, Survival) Difficulty, etc.
Perhaps also linking it to a statistics system could help to identify the favourite block types for building, mining, crafting, aswell as armor types, tool usage, etc.
It would also be interesting to see time graphs, of when the peak times are for various types of things (Request local time perhaps? for "when do people play" ?)

  • gigaherz - 14 years ago

I'm OK with it, but I suppose it would be best to ask on first run, and have an option to toggle it later.

  • me - 14 years ago

    dat sounds great
but when does mod support arrive

  • Anthony Petini - 14 years ago

I 100% completely support anything you put into the game. Look at the integrity in coming to ask the community first. I'll even send my address so you can fly me to Sweden lol. Thanks for everything notch!

  • Christian - 14 years ago

you shuld make it choseable so that you can turn it off if you want to. that way every one will be happy ;D

  • Morgan - 14 years ago

Minecraft can track anything they want! I love minecraft

  • Demon - 14 years ago

    i support this

  • maruko - 14 years ago

I have to say that I voted 'no' because I don't like anyone to track what I'm doing.

This oppinion might change as soon as I know what should be tracked.

  • olios popodakis - 14 years ago

The wish to collect data sounds like the talk of marketing folks. The dev can only have small interest in such data since it is not capable of making the game any better than with the usual communication and tools. Don't become an average company with the average habbits.

  • omnibro22 - 14 years ago

i see no point in this feature

  • Lisa - 14 years ago

I am perfectly fine with this. Minecraft is awesome!

  • Best_Architect - 14 years ago

Does that mean we can't play Minecraft singleplayer without Internet connection? Then NO

  • S - 14 years ago

I'm fine with this, You should even look at what mods we use if possible, but I agree with others, put an opt out option

  • Caljoones - 14 years ago

I'm completely fine with all of this!

  • spoonikle - 14 years ago

I am actually surprised you where not already doing this...

  • Chris - 14 years ago

I think this is a great idea. I really appreciate asking first. So cool of you to do that. Also, add an option to opt-out if you were to do this. I completely understand if people don't wan't to be forced into this.

  • Nubian - 14 years ago

I have grave concerns about this. If an opt-out ability is not added then Minecraft will become just another piece of spyware. I wouldn't care what information it was gathering - if I didn't have the option to say no I would stop playing Minecraft and uninstall it. Doing something like this would be seriously changing the basis on which I agreed to buy Minecraft in the first place.

However, give me the option to switch it off and I'll probably be happy to leave it on.

  • Teriki Tora - 14 years ago

I wouldn't mind some data-tracking at all. For example, if there's a lot of people using multiplayer, it would direct the programmers to work more on the multiplayer side of things (fixing those bugs). Anonymous data? Sure, anything to help the game improve.

  • Flosse - 14 years ago

I absolutely support this. If some big Game Industry does this, mostly without asking (hello @ wow, rift and other similar Games ToS, read them? they take all your data by default), I hate it, but honestly, If notch is as kind enough to ASK us and make a SURVEY and REASON it properly, why not? The amount of trust given to the community is strong in this and I have no problem to pay it back with anyonymous data ;).

  • Mondai - 14 years ago

I wouldn't say it sounds cool, but it sounds non-intrusive and acceptable. :D

  • Joshua Radcliffe - 14 years ago

There are several companies that already do this, except they don't use anonymous status for players. Companies that rum MMO's do this and can track your progress. It's a good idea for players who griev and such, players may even be able to get peace of mind if this passes. However, this comes handy for the developers of Minecraft. They will be able to work on bringing better quality to the game and even more bug fixes. The people who worked on making Minecraft better, should call and get involved with the dev team in not only working on adding things to Minecraft, but also making the programs more stable and safe. Recently, I 've had to download the game again due to problems. For instance, multiple blocks of sand not producing multiple blocks of glass. So I left the mods behind and have decided to play Minecraft the original way. True Vanilla.

  • ludo0777 - 14 years ago

Why are people complaining? It is a great idea! They can see what people are doing on their game!

  • serzern - 14 years ago

    @TheCodeMonk
you are retarded. what is a hacker going to do with how long you play the game for or what system you play the game or if you downloaded it or stream it on your browser. sereously people this is only gona help make the game better.

  • IsaacBravin - 14 years ago

Think about it people. If they had this data they would know what is used more and that could help them in prioritizing their bug reports.

  • TheCodeMonk - 14 years ago

I really wish all these companies would stop with this whole collection "anonymous" data about what we do. What is this really going to allow you to do better? Nothing. People play the game. Let them play it in a safe and secure manner without giving some idiot hacker the ability to compromise the data stream for evil. Seriously, stop with the invasion of privacy already. You don't need the data.

  • Warrangie - 14 years ago

Not bad, i want more energy mods, IC2 - good mod. =)

  • CHRIS - 14 years ago

Yes i think this is a good idea but if you find that more people play on macs and not pc's then start updating only macs you will lose at lot of good costmers. as for what people do in the game that is not a bad idea that way you could see what people want in the game. i like to build not that survival is a bad mode but i like the freedom of creating. you might try creating a site or web page where you have set of questions that people could go to and answer questions to get the info you are looking for. that way you could get a pecentage data chart.

    1. what mode do you play more often?
    2. how long on averge do you play in a 1 week period?
    3. what type of operating system do you run?
    4. what is your computer type? pc or mac or applet?
something of that nature. and maybe add a place for suggestions and idea. i have heard some good ones and bad ones but if you want to know what your great fan base wants ask and give them a place to go to sumite them. you have many fans that would work for free on there off time to weed through them and rate them. i for one would do this. if you got say 50 of them (idea rates) and give them the same list to look at and tell them to rate them. put all their rates together and see what is most posible.

Thank you for your time in reading this hope it helps
    Chris Earley

  • serzern - 14 years ago

fuck toggling the ability this is notch people do you really think he is going to be doing bad things with the information he gathers. If it checks up on the game every ten min then it wont slow the game down and realty the data he is collecting is stuff i couldn't care less if other people knew about. I might be a little embarrassed to be caught signing into mine craft on a mac but other that that he is only looking for stuff to improve are game play guys. and for that 16% that says this is a bad idea well you are all stupid.

  • tcheightyeight - 14 years ago

    Hello Notch/Mojang Team,

Do it! But give users the option to opt-out. I think most people wouldn't care. But for those who do, then they can opt not to send in that data. That way, you collect the valuable data you need and can streamline things on your side of the fence. I hope this input has been valuable. Good job on producing such an awesome and educational game.

  • Lív - 14 years ago

I don't think anything would be wrong with this. I mean, he's only taking useless stuff.
And if he really does it to figure out whether we've bought the game or not, let him. It's his right to do so if he wants to, and you didn't buy the game. Or else you got nothing to fear.
Maybe he could figure out some way to only look at the few things which you cant hack through? .. I don't know.
But yeah, I think every 10th minute is a bit much. You should cool it a bit down. Like every 30th minute.. Make it optional or so that people can pick between 10 mins, 30 mins or one hour. Such things.
And if you make it optional, start it with enabled. Not disabled.

But I gotta say, if I made a game, I'd really like to see how people play it, as well. And figure out statistics and such.

Just the fact that he asked before makes him incredibly reliable.

  • Gabbo98 - 14 years ago

I think it should be perfectly fine. IF you don't use any private info. Even tracking Minecraft ID's wouldn't be that bad either. You should however, let the player know. I understand that if you have a setting that lets the player choose or not, this will change everything about how these statistics show. So therefore I don't think this is a good option. Just let the users know and thats fine. But if you really wanna be mean about it. (Since no one reads terms and conditions :P) You could, in the next update; Have a new terms and conditions that includes this in it. Tell them that you will see what players does with the game and all. This will both be legal, and assuring that you will be able to see this information. Aside from all this though, I am really wondering why the hell you guys are curious about what we do with the game. I hope its because you wan't to improve the game, and not because you wan't to be all hacker and know about our private life. Hope that changed about how you guys look on it and have a nice day. :)
    - Gabriel

  • Tom - 14 years ago

You all are awesome for asking. I don't mind, it is just play time and what not. My concern is that something like this might slow down the game even more, in which case I would not like it. The best way to handle this though would be to institute it into the game with a toggle (default 'on' to share anonymous info)

  • Diedblack - 14 years ago

You must be careful with this notch... You can't just take our datas anonymously and check it out.

You should have the choice to YES/NO Send anonymous data about our game play.
That's what the biggest game companies does.

Jagex LTd makers of Runescape asked their players to go on a special page then click a button to start the evaluation of their computer so jagex could know what kind of computer most of player have. So they update the game based on theses data.

You should do something like ''Yes / No send my datas''

  • Ben Hurr - 14 years ago

As people have no doubt mentioned, this would only be good if you could turn it on or off whenever you want.

Also being transparent about what type of information you're collecting would probably motivate more people to leave this feature on.

  • Jerry - 14 years ago

If it was added. IT should ask the user to let them know and be a option to help so the user knows i think anonymously collecting data without the users consent is wrong. Just make it a option within minecraft?

  • Magicsteve - 14 years ago

I support anything that makes it possible for you to tailor the game to your players. Collecting anonymous data is perfectly fine with me, but it needs to be an option.

  • Pat - 14 years ago

Wouldn't it be great to activate this feature by yourself? I would agree if it were an option. I do like the way you include the community into your decision but I do not want to have either or nor -please think about an optional way for the player.

  • Root_Infinity - 14 years ago

    Two things.

    First, THANKS FOR ASKING!

And second, I support this if and only if it is toggle-able and transparent (log all content that is sent? Possibly also toggle-able?). Again though, thanks for asking!

  • Voxeel - 14 years ago

Yes, have the player decide when they want to activate this as an option! Make it transparent (log what is sent).

  • MIK0 - 14 years ago

I would make it optional, turned off by default and prompted the first time to make known that that option is available and then don't ask it again.

  • Joshua - 14 years ago

I think Mojang actually has a chance to do this right. I don't think anyone else has. If it's optional, it's ok with me.

  • Nectuz - 14 years ago

Would be cool if you/jeb could make an option to turn on and off that "tracking".
Would be cool if you could have a replay thing, so you can watch your 5 latest gameplays or something too. and a sort of an editor so It will be better to make MC videos. (also an option to turn on and off the recording of gameplays).

  • honam1021 - 14 years ago

It would be better if MC allows you to choose to send the data or not

  • Icarus - 14 years ago

Sounds like a great idea, but make it optional with default set to off, or have it prompt you once when you install Minecraft and have the toggle in the options.

  • Mr.Moooose - 14 years ago

I wouldn't mind giving any of the listed information to the people at Mojang and then some. People, what you have to realize is that Minecraft has roughly 5 million subscribers. Mojang is comprised of about 15 people... The guys over at Mojang could care less what individual people are doing in their own little worlds, they're looking for big numbers and statistics to improve the quality of the game. Now I do agree that you should have an opt in/out option, with default just to keep everyone happy. Mojang, I have complete trust in you taking the information you want and nothing more, and being responsible with it!

Oh yeah, and the new jungle biomes kick ass!

    Nice, Jeb! [And Notch :)]

  • Jeremiah - 14 years ago

sIt would be wise to consider making that an optional feature of the game. (such as, in settings you can turn that on and off) This way paranoid 1984-esque people won't feel as though their crafting is being invaded.

  • nerwall - 14 years ago

I think that it would be interesting to see stats on how mant people play minecraft and on what os and etc. I dont know why anyone would care if it was anonymous .

Ps: I am proud of my minority OS

  • Juan - 14 years ago

I feel that if there was an "opt in" button that is set to off as default then people wont mind opting in or out, data may not be as abundant but you will have enough data and happy miners :-)

  • AmEv - 14 years ago

I personally don't mind if you upload certain info. As for OS info, I'm not sure why people are griping. I don't think it's because of mocking; I think it's more of debugging purposes.
I do have one question: Is the data going to include our username?

  • MC ID: t3chno1983 - 14 years ago

After the intense pressure that SOPA and PIPA have been getting, I'm actually surprised and glad you are deciding to do this. What you are asking of us is performance-and-stability-related stuff.... Yes, you are collecting data, that pertains to usage as well, but it is for the pure intent of being a better developer/producer/designer... If any website out there needs to 'self-regulate' they need to follow the same idea you have, Notch.... Tracking My Data: I approve

  • JFG - 14 years ago

    Just make it optional.

  • Michael - 14 years ago

    Just make it Opt-in/out.

I personally do not want this, even if its anonymous

  • Squeezie007 - 14 years ago

I honestly do not care what Mojang do with my Minecraft, as long as they don't give out my password. And they wouldn't do that. I trust Mojang. They're a reliable bunch of Indie devs who just wanna have some fun. I like them more because they joke around, and aren't always super-serious and always respond to questions unlike some game developers. Good work Mojang, keep it up!

  • Space Plant - 14 years ago

    This would be awesome.
A detailed stats page would also be awesome, since the one in minecraft has a tenancy to reset

  • Roman - 14 years ago

Only if you have the ability to disable it as an option.

  • John - 14 years ago

    I hope Mojang reads this.

The large majority of people on this poll say it would be fine. But even though MOST people are okay with it, THERE'S STILL 13 THOUSAND PEOPLE WHO AREN'T (not even including people who didn't see the poll). If you add this, then you'll be offending a huge amount of players.

I think it should be off by default, and you should be asked whether you want it enabled it or not. Everyone is satisfied that way.

  • Eric - 14 years ago

I agree with lots of the commenter. It has to be an opt in setting the options that pops whenever you play the game for the first time.

  • Noah - 14 years ago

I love looking at statistics. But that's just me, I'm a nerd.

  • Lord_Hyren - 14 years ago

I think data like this can be extremely useful to the developers and especially for the sake of tailoring the game even more and collecting data on appreciation of each feature.

I just feel as if this would open up the game as a means for stuff other then what it is intended for... All Minecraft users are registered so it would be easy enough to send out a questionnaire about usage statistics.

To those who oppose; at least he bothered to ask.... Plus, wtf could you possibly be doing on minecraft that you wouldn't want to share?!? I can understand not wanting browser activity and torrent activity tracked but what you do in a videogame shouldn't be something that would require 'privacy' or could get you in trouble.

Should notch be reading this, I would make a recommendation to him.
Specifically, that recommendation would be that the player be given a toggle, with the default setting being off, so as to avoid any unwanted intrusions, as to whether they Individually want to send or deny this information, as opposed to such a decision being made with a poll as it is now.
This makes t so that people who want to help can, and that those who don't may keep their privacy, which is certainly something many people deeply value.

I would enjoy to send you some information about how I play, but since i've been locked out of my account now for at least 2 months I am unable to. I've sent in support tickets but I haven't heard anything in two months!

I know my last comment was a bit long, but I have to respond to one more thing:
"I think it's getting a little too personal by checking which operating system people have"

Let's first assume that you don't think that Notch is lying - then the data gathered will be anonymous. So it will just be statistics - so many percent use Windows, so many percent use Linux, et cetera. Is the percentages of different operating system users some sort of state secret you're trying to keep under wraps?

And even if you don't believe that Notch is telling the truth, if you think he'll be able to connect this information to specific accounts.. How could you possibly muster up the energy to care about that? Is it a big personal secret that nobody can know about? What's the people at Mojang going to do, point at their screens and laugh at your choice of OS?
