Shouldn't make it optional, would make for perfect analysys. I'm for.
Guys, what's your problem? It wont give away your password or anything, but help improve minecraft -,-

I do not give you permission to track my children that have accounts. Ever. If you do this, you have to make it opt-in. I don't care how innocuous you think or say the tracking is. You don't have the right to assume permission to track either my kids or myself.
Sorry for the tone, but I'm rather passionate about this and about folks tracking my kids in *any* way, including 'anonymous' usage data."
Minecraft is not going to "track your children". Jeez. There are people and organisations that you should be suspicious of, like I don't know, www.sellyourchildren.ru, but Mojang is not amongst them. The internet isn't the bad 'ol place you think it is.
RyanP - 14 years ago
I'm actually really concerned that I won't be able to control whether Notch will be able to see if I'm running Hardcore mode on a Mac.
Guys...really? Seriously? Why is anyone against this, apart from obviously opting out due to performance? Who cares if Mojang knows little pointless details about how you play the game? It's not like they're setting up a big brother cam, watching your every move. They just want to know some things about what the average player does. I mean, did anyone even read the post all the way through?
It sounds such a great idea.
Having statistics sent to you could help the game even more.
It would be perfectly fine with me, and so should be with other people.
I also would kindly suggest taking the player statistics(which shown to him in-game)
Because then you could see if people are more into building, or more into monster hunting, etc.
Jackardsn - 14 years ago
I would rather have it like a log, that gets the information and saves it to the disk, and when you close Minecraft it ask "Do you want to send the following informations to Mojang.... bla bla bla 12 Hours online multiplayer bla bla" and some Statistics, so Mojang can also but up a Statistics page on who mined what and how many of it (Creative and Survival apart from each other though) :D
Fritz Limo - 14 years ago
I wouldn't mind at all, but you should definitely make it optional.
Man with a thousand wigs - 14 years ago
Go ahead, most games track what we're doing anyway, and don't give us an OPT out choice. Personally, I trust Mojang, I thought Minecraft a very, very long time ago, and you haven't screwed it up at all, a few anonymous stats would be fine for me, just don't go selling to a big company & letting them have this information, keep Mojang what it is now, Pure.

Sure, but the best, nicest way, is an opt-in!
(Or make it so that there is a button to send the data when I want.)
The best would be to show live counters of that data on the website :D
Aeo - 14 years ago
I voted yes, but I do believe this should be optional. I'll let ya watch me, but I would like the option of turning it off.
Nico100 - 14 years ago
Be sure you collect crashes traces! ;)
HyvelTjuven - 14 years ago
The fact that they're asking if it's ok in the first place kind of tells me Mojang won't screw me over. Go ahead Mojang, track my minecraft! :D
private man - 14 years ago
no i dont trust mojang enough to allow it, youve only made one game. i wouldnt even let valve do it if they asked.
Johan - 14 years ago
If Mojang becomes evil in 10 years time when all the good people have left, and the game doesn't already have phone-home functionality, they'll simply add it without necessarily telling us.
You're worrying for the sake of worrying.
Eiertschik - 14 years ago
I agree with it if it's opt-in.
And please remove this feature if Mojang should ever be swallowed by some big evil company.
Noxus91190 - 14 years ago
This is a bad idea. I mean, it would be useful, it would be great, but... It might become too invasive with time.
I am not against that, I am against what it might become. I trust Mojang, but none of us can tell what Mojang will become in... let's say ten years.
Number of pigs slain: 40
Times you let go of the shift key and died: 61
Times you got creeped on: 13
Average life expectancy: 23 minutes 11 seconds
You could really add some hilarious achievements to go with that as well. And scoreboards for most blocks moved and such.
I suggest you also add a local data cache so that you can track user trends and so on, but then it would get annonymized before sending.
CJ - 14 years ago
Please just make sure that it doesn't break anything if/when the server is unavailable. The last thing we want is another dependency on a remote server.
Deiscorides - 14 years ago
It needs to be OPTIONAL via in-game menu toggle.
Mads - 14 years ago
I agree with everyone else here - make it an option in the settings.
If you do deside to collect data from the clients, maybe you could collect the game stats too, so that we could see how many blocks are placed, miles run e.t.c. on a worldwide basis, maybe even split it by contry?
kevin Nedberg - 14 years ago
As long as it does not lag the game every 10 minutes upon connection!
Django Solare - 14 years ago
It's a great idea, but it should be optional. And not just optional, but opt-in. One of the big things that drives me crazy about information gathering is having to go find the option to not have the information gathered. I'd love to add my own statistics to the community, but taking it with only the implicit permission (by way of leaving it opt-out) of those who might not even know it's being taken is sneaky, underhanded, and just plain wrong. /rant
wouter - 14 years ago
Evil. Unless it is a personal choice obviously. Opt in, not opt out, but of course you could ask the first time a player starts the game. And if the explanation is nice as in how he'd be helping you build a better game, most would opt in I'd wager. I'd opt in under those circumstances. Getting it stuffed down my throat would make me a sad and angry player.
OlivierZ - 14 years ago
Could be good to see how many linux users there are as well!
I voted "yes". I hope this ain't the first step in your plan to achieve total world domination.
But then again, that wouldn't be so bad in your case. :O
Monkeydoodle165 - 14 years ago
How bout ram usage tracking and crashes because those affect allot of users and they would like it fixed
Chris - 14 years ago
ok, with a checkbox to turn it on or off it would be ok I think. The default setting should be that it is turned off.
Anonymous - 14 years ago
If you do implement, please make it optional like Microsoft, Mozilla, Nullsoft, and various other companies do with their programs.
BubbyBobble - 14 years ago
Yeah, sure. ^-^ As long as it's optional, and you let everyone know what you're tracking and how long you keep said data.
Anonymous - 14 years ago
Yes pls do it optional with a little setting, so everyone who agrees can turn it on.
listen to your community as you did before ;)
MaxZamoraJ - 14 years ago
Just if you don't keep any user information for yourself. Everything (even if anonymous) information has to be deleted. OK!?
lairsdragon - 14 years ago
Make it optional, if someone minds, he can turn it out...
Thomas - 14 years ago
Optional is a must but otherwise it's cool! I'm just implementing some tracking in our software and it's pretty cool what you can read from that data!
k09 - 14 years ago
sounds a little evil. Make it a free choise, a little checkbox to ask about tracking.
Azarion196 - 14 years ago
thank you for asking about this, instead of just doing, like the big developers/publishers :)
Freakineye - 14 years ago
Make it optional and I bet you both sides of the voters will be pleased.
Hu Man - 14 years ago
Stating the obvious here, but if this is to be put into the game.. for the love of pony, why not consider adding a setting so the user can decide???
Secret Admirer - 14 years ago
As long as you keep it as an optional feature and not turned on by default I'm okay with it.
Shouldn't make it optional, would make for perfect analysys. I'm for.

Just sayin'
Plus, eydryan gave an excellent suggestion: tracking a lot of bizarre things will be very interesting!
Actually track them locally as well, while you're at it.
I'm all for it, just make it an option in the settings
No need to opt-in: I think opt-out is fine.
If you are so paranoid you don't like giving out anonymous data, you'll be clever enough to opt-out.
8,000 people are fucking idiots, i hate every single one you go kill yourselves you bastards
Fine, but make it opt-in and make damn sure it won't lag the game or its connection to servers.
its nice, that notch asked.
put in these times i have real problems with collecting my personal data. even if its anomynous.
dont like the idea. and without optin I wouldn't play minecraft anymore.
Yes i would like that BUT with optional. Sound amazingly cool, and with optional none can complain! Definitely a yes!
I'm ok with it so long as it is opt-in. Or if it is opt-out then there should be a first run modal warning about the tracking.
It sounds such a great idea.
Having statistics sent to you could help the game even more.

If it helps improving minecraft I say yes. But optional please.
I join the previous speakers. Optional, but no matter whether it's turned on or off by standard.
If this is implemented I have no issue. I'm sure you'll do the right thing and have it optional.
The fact you asked, inclines me towards wanting to tick the box allowing the data to be transmitted.
Thank you for asking and listening to us. That's why we love Minecraft.
I voted "yes". I hope this ain't the first step in your plan to achieve total world domination.
