I would really like a customizable prefix when my Twitter updates are being sent to my Facebook status. It's a pretty simple request it should seem... and obviously there is a desire from a lot of people to bring back a prefix.

  • lucas - 18 years ago

why does it have to be a hard choice?

    make the prefix:
    a) an optional item for each user
    b) configurable (some people might want to have something like "is using twitter to say "blah")

I stopped twittering for a couple of hours, until I disabled the facebook app. Now twitter and FB are completely separated, and I am not going to link them until the prefix is available again.

I ended up installing twittersync and prepending "via Twitter:". works great.

  • DieLaughing - 18 years ago

Facebook is lame. Complaining about Facebook makes you lamer than that. Get a life people.

I find the "is twittering" message that the app adds to be extremely annoying and it confuses the many people who don't know what twitter is.

When I found that the "is twittering" words can't be change/disabled, I went ahead and removed the facebook app altogether. If the words can be removed/changed, I'll gladly re-add the app.

  • Ethan Prater - 18 years ago

Yes - the whole reason I use TwitterSync, with fewer features than the "native" Twitter app, is to avoid the silly "is Twittering". Just make a user-configurable option to prepend an update with something standard when sent to Facebook - that way those who love "is Twittering:" can keep it.

I think the Twittered text could be a nice post script:

Ric Bretschneider is looking at fingerprint door locks. - Post from Twitter.

If there hadn't been a twitter "ad" in my friends Facebook statuses, I might not have found Twitter, and my life, incomplete.

I like the "tweets" suggestion; the reason I haven't synced my Facebook status to my Twitter account is because I don't like the "is twittering" bit... as others have said, it is too long. I also like the "@fb" idea, so that you can choose which updates show up on Facebook.

  • Dee - 18 years ago

remove it, or give some options
    eg.
    (from twitter[.com])
    s/he twittered

or even appending it, rather then prepending so the context is [perhaps] eiaser to understand .. less jarring?

  • @jaced - 18 years ago

"recently twittered:" or "recent tweet:"would be cool. Since, if you think about it the action is in the past, not necessarily in the present, as "is twittering" indicates.

Speaking of all this, we really need to define the difference between the words "twitter" and "tweet". They tend to be synonymous right now. I motion we all start treating "twitter" as a verb, and "tweet" as a noun.

    Correct syntax:

    I twittered my tweets.

    Incorrect:

    I tweeted.

    etc.

Not that anybody's gonna go out of their way to obey such a rule, but we should at least establish some sort of rule for breaking.

  • zard - 18 years ago

Only keep it if you can link the "... is twittering" bit to twitter profiles AND you can link "@username" to that persons profile. If you can't do that, ditch it and ditch it fast.

  • Elliott Ng - 18 years ago

There should be some notification because tweets are often very different from normal FB statusing. But it is too long. Should be "Twitter:" or "Tweet:" or just "t:" or "twt:"

  • Ryan - 18 years ago

I agree -- make it an option

  • Ismail - 18 years ago

lol this has got to be the funniest quote from these comments
"Tweets is cute and more approachable."

  • Kyle Johnson - 18 years ago

The twitter/facebook connection I'm using allows you to choose what to put before your tweet. I feel like I need something though, otherwise all my tweets have to start with "is" to have it make any sense on facebook.

  • Jeremy Faulkner - 18 years ago

Change it to a customizable text. Then all sides get what they want.

  • Joe Conyers III - 18 years ago

    Option Please!

  • Mike Carvalho - 18 years ago

I think user-configurable would be a great solution. Also, what about appending it to the end of the status, i.e. "Mike is doing something (via Twitter)"? I don't guess it's possible to add a link back to the Twitter profile.

  • Christina - 18 years ago

i agree with just changing it to "tweets".
    is twittering is too long.

Is twittering sounds like a lot of work for people who don't know what it is. Tweets is cute and more approachable.

  • Sean Smith - 18 years ago

I prefer "tweets", which is what I use with TwitterSync.

A few people have asked "are you a bird?" so even that doesn't always work.

  • Alexander Gordon - 18 years ago

Would also stop everyone from asking me what twittering is ... too hard to explain. Link everything together = one small step towards semanticweb?

  • Erwin Chuk - 18 years ago

Yes please. It does seem repetitive and wordy. However, it does seem to help put the status in context (that it is Twitter...for whatever that's worth).

  • Jay Fienberg - 18 years ago

Configurable in the facebook app would be ideal choice #1.

  • Matt - 18 years ago

I have already switched to another facebook app because of this issue. You will only continue to lose usage of your facebook app if you keep the "is twittering"

  • Dave Newman - 18 years ago

I think you should leave it or make it an option to turn on and off. I think you should be promoting your brand and the cool app you guys have built.

  • Historicast - 18 years ago

    Can I be impartial?

I just use moodblast and don't have to worry about it. http://blog.circlesixdesign.com/download/moodswing If you are on a Mac nothing else comes close, and it's FREE!

    I hate the term "tweet."

Why not just put a user option in the FB app? That's the simple solution that doesn't upset anyone.

  • somenice - 18 years ago

Twittersync is the way to go if you are tired of "is Twittering"

  • James Thomas - 18 years ago

I have my Facebook set up with a Twitter widget and it RSS feeds look fine, so I am not sure what you are talking about. You're the pros, I will leave it up to you. Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)

  • eric rupert - 18 years ago

is should stay. it's the brand identification of the service that is giving us this functionality for free.

  • gerard - 18 years ago

I like the context for myself and my friends. There are other ways to integrate Twitter and FB other than the Twitter FB app, if you don't want the "is twittering:"

  • Cat Laine - 18 years ago

Most of my friends IRL aren't v. techie, but a few have gotten on twitter because all my facebook status updates are prefaced with "is twittering". That said it is a bit clunky. Maybe "From twitter" would be better w/ a link to twitter or a link to the tweet itself.

  • twitter.com/arnold - 18 years ago

+1 for putting it as a user defined option.

    or another shortened option:
    [name] twittered:

  • serafina - 18 years ago

An option would be best, but I'd choose to keep it. Facebook status's are prefaced with the person's name and is theoretically supposed to be a complete sentence. twitter isn't. since these are two different formats, it would be awkward to try to merge the two without some sort of distinction

  • Dan - 18 years ago

My only concern removing it is what FB friends that are not familar with Twitter will confuse messages with @replies or @refrences.

  • Rich - 18 years ago

I use twittersync, filtered so that only updates beginning with "is" go to my facebook status.

That way I can choose what goes there, and what only makes sense on twitter.

Perhaps something like that would be good!

  • Nico Lumma - 18 years ago

I'd like to see an option for "is twittering" in the app.

  • Tricia - 18 years ago

I think it's useful. I have a lot of friends on Facebook that have seen it and they in turn are now using Twitter because of the context.

  • Sacca - 18 years ago

I think it provides needed context to other Facebook users who can thereby understand the vibe and character of my updates (which often serve a very different purpose than FB status). I also think it leads to a lot of discovery of the service and creates more Twitter connections among people who are actually my friends.

  • Rachel - 18 years ago

Twittering is a really annoying word to put in EVERY status update. I would dearly love to have the option to turn it off. I've turned the facebook status updates on and off twice now because I'm so conflicted - love for twitter, hate for "twittering".

  • Jorriss - 18 years ago

Twitter should keep it. I get tons of questions about what is Twitter from by "is Twittering" in my status. Free advertising = goodness.

  • mitchellmckenna - 18 years ago

+1 for putting it as a user option in the FB app

  • David - 18 years ago

I have turned on more friends to twitter by having the "is twittering" in from of my facebook status. People ask me what it means and next thing I know they have joined me on twitter :-) It's great! I think the best thing would just have an option to have it or not. Just let us have the option!

  • Dustin Senos - 18 years ago

My vote is a user defined option. Let us prefix it with what we'd like.

  • Kinmar - 18 years ago

i find it useful for a couple of reasons.

    1. I would like to see more of my friends use twitter and I have already had people ask what it was when they see my status updates.

    2. A a lot more of my friends use facebook than do twitter. And the ones that do use twitter are usually on facebook everyday while they only check twitter a few times a week or so. This way they know that the status update is coming from twitter.

  • Shaun Dakin - 18 years ago

I like it... it let's me know that person is on Twiter and I can follow them there as well.

  • mary hodder - 18 years ago

it's also important that you have some clue because otherwise it will look like the person has been to facebook recently when they really haven't.

  • fritz - 18 years ago

it is useful text, but maybe it could be shortened.

  • .:Gaea:. - 18 years ago

Why not use"tweets"? I like seeing where the msg came from.

  • Skip Franklin - 18 years ago

i'd like to see "Is Twittering" shortened to "Twitter:"

  • Tracy - 18 years ago

    Perhaps something shorter?
    [name] tweets:

    I like Andrew's idea, too.

  • Jared - 18 years ago

Twittersync already does away with it. That's why i use it over the standard twitter facebook app.

  • Aaron Forgue - 18 years ago

I think it is necessary for context. What does '@username' mean to someone on Facebook who is not familiar with Twitter? Context is key.

  • Mike Champion - 18 years ago

Instead of updating FB on every twitter, I would like to have an option to only update FB when I include something like "@fb" in the tweet. (For bonus points, Twitter could strip that out from what is actually displayed)

  • Robert - 18 years ago

I like it because it increases the exposure of Twitter. I'd like for some of my friends to ask me about it, and it'd be even cooler if the "is twittering" were a hyperlink to twitter.com, but I don't think that's possible in the current implementation of facebook statuses.

  • Martindale - 18 years ago

Please, get rid of it. If there's any doubt, allow the option of prefixing all Twitter status updates with any text of the users' choice.

  • mary hodder - 18 years ago

    ev,
    could you instead do:

    @maryhodder - status msg

    in facebook?

at least it would be a clue that it comes from you.

    mary

  • rob - 18 years ago

Change to "tweets" where tweet is a link to the twitter page for that tweet.

  • Jim - 18 years ago

If it must be there, make it an option to be turned off. I'd like my twitter > facebook status to be seamless, if possible. Thx.

  • Daniel - 18 years ago

Why not just put a user option in the FB app? That's the simple solution that doesn't upset anyone.

  • dezrah - 18 years ago

I think it's a pretty useful Twitter/personal promotion. A lot of people still don't know what Twitter is, and it helps get the word out.

  • andy magoon - 18 years ago

i could see "tweets" but "is twittering" ftl

  • dan - 18 years ago

It does seem a bit redundant and at the same time repetitive.

  • Andrew Gee - 18 years ago

I reckon it should be [your name] - [your twitter status]

Or perhaps it would be cool to be able to choose what it puts. There are 28%, at this time, that think they do want it.

  • Jeff - 18 years ago

I'm so tired of people confusing "twittering" for "twitterpated", and asking my why I am always doing the former.
