If it's too expensive to live here, move to where you can live within your means. I don't want my taxes paying for your kids. I like Palm Springs, but do you know why I don't live there? I can't afford it.

The staff who care for our children should be entitled to a living wage. The child care centers have overhead - insurance, maintenance, taxes, mortgages. Yes, Lauren, it is crazy. But as with so many things lately, there are mandates for these programs that guarantee the safety of your child but also cost the centers a lot of money. These are the proverbial "unfunded mandates."

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, when women began to work for those second paychecks for the family, the neighbors got your kids off the bus, or grandma watched them. That has disappeared as an option, with nothing financially reasonable to replace it. My husband and I worked opposite shifts for years to cover the kids, but that is a hard way for a family to live as well.

There are many who would say it is not the responsibility of government to subsidize care for our kids. I say that if the goal is a dynamic economy, and the subsidy of child care allows parents to earn more for their families - which will be spent buying goods and services from other businesses - then maybe we should be looking at this. Otherwise, lower wage workers, who earn about the same as child care workers, won't find it economically feasible to work at all, and there will be less disposable income for families.

I think it is crazy that I need to pay $600.00 a week for someone to care for my kids now because one check wasn't cutting it anymore. I make $650.00 a week! So I resigned! Pay someone else to care for my kids for 50$???
