Would it be asking too much to enforce the current laws instead of knee jerk reactions of we need to make newer or more restrictive ones?

Don't mess with 2nd Amendment! Obama should look at his state first before opening his mouth. Mir killings in Chcago despite strict gun laws. So what have the Federal Government intervene?! Sounds like a dictatorship to me. The gun free zones disable sound minded citizens from protecting themselves and are a magnet for idiot murderers wanting to make a statement. The state should review mental health policies or laws, red flag the obvious and pass the info to police. Shore up campus security. They done necessarily have to be expensive.

All these has to do with the Law Maker. I think they should change the Gun Law. Perhaps they don't want to change it because most of them are Member of the NRA and they should think that life is more more more important. They should change the law right now and make it more more more strick.

Most of the gun violence that has happened has been done with registered weapons. If you don't believe it, try doing your own research. Go online and find statistics about it. You may be surprised what you learn. You shouldn't just accept at face value everything you hear from politicians, especially those with an agenda!

The statement that most shootings have been done with unregistered guns is absolutely false! The president lied about that. Even this tragic shooting yesterday was done with weapons that were registered. It's too bad the president didn't mention the 43 shootings in Chicago that happened last month. Maybe it's because they have very strict gun laws there that he didn't want to mention that.

Almost all firearm related violence are committed by persons that do not even possess a firearms permit or the firearm is unregistered. Perhaps imposing heavier penalties for crimes committed with firearms will help to reduce the statistics however if one is set on committing a crime, this wouldn't matter. I feel that if law enforcers are more successful in apprehending drug offenders, gang related offenders or other violent crime groups that commonly possess firearms, the statistics will be reduced even further. If funds and resources are increased to give our law enforcers the tools they require to fight this war on illegal firearms use, this will be the answer!

If stricter gun control laws are imposed, how will us law abiding citizens defend ourselves?

Sometimes things have to get extremely bad to get better again . This gun issue is one that will become worse before it becomes better.
People need to be fed up and want to change the law , as long as people take the right to bear arms to its most extreme interpretation this gun violence phenomenon will continue to occur on a regular basis. People need to be extremely tired of this "gun violence " and vote for people who stand to change the law and put some rational gun control measures . The next election is their opportunity but I'm betting nothing will change .
So yes, I think we need to be worse than what the current NRA stand for and go to the extremes so to convince people this is not what they want and induce change.

Islander 2 then you did not solve any problem with what you said, you just made yourself worse than NRA.

Let's do what the NRA wants , let's make it extremely easy to purchase guns and ammo and let make every single adult carry a loade firearm .
And then let's all march down to the NRA headquarters and shoot it up for target practice. Just start shooting up everything the NRA stands for now , NRA has changed dramatically since its creation , their message has changed from the past to a more aggressive nature. Safety and compassion and the lack of empathy is non existent in the new NRA mindset , driven by billion $ Gun corporations agenda to sell more firearms at any cost . I am a firearm owner and don't understand their reluctance to have a national background check for any who want to purchase a firearm. It's the right thing to do ! I say give everyone a firearm and start shooting ! That will surely get the ball rolling for gun control measures.
