It is about time someone in government spoke out to encourage citizens who are legally armed to protect themselves. The underlying message I took from Sheriff Van Blarcum is that there are not enough first responders in this country to protect the citizenry. For those who wan more gun control - Europe does, yet the terrorists still get guns and kill - those victims couldn't protect themselves. We need and should be able to protect ourselves and our families. There is no room for political correctness and liberal ilealogy in dealing with radical Islamists who want nothing more than to annihilate the western world. I am a veteran US. Marine. I cant begin to tell you how proud I am of this Sheriff to STAND UP and say what needs to be said. PLEASE--Do the following for one moment if you can . See in your mind that joyful Christmas Party In San Bernardino , now--put your young son , daughter ,wife or husband, in that room , or even a close friend , or how about just a fellow AMERICAN ,who is just like you and me and only wants to live a good life and take care of their family and make a living. Suddenly two MUSLIM TERRORISTS enter and are ready to begin to systematically MURDERING the people in this room. Your young daughter attending this party is now about to lose her life in the blink of an eye, shot to death in cold blood , in a room praying, crying and so scared that she is about to die , calling out for her mom and dad to help her . Then suddenly a man she knows from the party pulls out a concealed pistol and starts putting rounds on the two terrorists (body armor or not) this action changes the entire course of events and saves her life as the two wounded or even only momentarily shocked terrorists ,flee the scene or have to pull back and instead of spending your holiday with tears flowing and heart aching that will never stop for the loss of your beautiful daughters life, taken by some radicalized scum and to never hear here laugh or speak again.. It was all avoided due to just ONE person who had a concealed weapon with them in that room. Or even if he/she possibly just defended that room full of people long enough in holding them off till the police got on scene and into the building to take them on. and the outcome was joyful instead of mournful and you met your daughter at that bldg. and felt her arms wrapped around you once again--full of life and love. All because just one person had a concealed carry and altered the course of events long enough to save her life and the others in the room. TRAGICALLY this never happened and there are 14 families that are now spending there holidays saying goodbye to a love they will never see , hold , kiss or smile with ever again. Someone is burying their beautiful young daughter , son, ,father mother this holiday . 14 TIMES!! Along with some 21 other families whose loved one was almost taken from them as well. California has the most restrictive gun laws in the country ,and whom did these laws benefit in the final outcome of this heart breaking tragedy ? So NO-- I don't want to hear another left wing liberal rant and not even one more ridiculous gun control measure --BECAUSE GUESS WHAT --THE TERRORSITS AND CRIMINALS ARE THANKING YOU FOR UNARMING THEIR TARGETS OF OPPORTUNITY !! This MORON of an Attorney General appointed by Obama actually had the audacity and the following heartless comment afterwards and said: " It is a wonderful opportunity and wonderful moment to really make a significant change". The sheriff is assuming all gun owners are responsible, level-headed, well-trained individuals (and many gun owners are), but there are too many angry, unbalanced people out there who don't need encouragement to be ready to commit violence.
i applied for a handgun license but was denied , based on the decision of the detective at the dutchess ctny pistol bureau,reason i was not misinformed as to what should be put in application ,4 misds dating back 1976 which were resolved by small fine, they are denieing myself my rights to protect /defend my family, home,, under 2nd ammendment,

What happened in San Bernardino happened in a gun-free zone in a state with the strictest gun control laws in the country. Calling for more gun control is just stupid because it will solve NOTHING. There isn't a law in the world that would have stopped those people from doing what they did.
You want to stop mass shootings? You have to be able to identify and help the people who have hate in their hearts and minds, but no one wants to go down that road because it's sensitive and someone might get offended.

I am proud of Ulster and Sullivan county Sheriffs asking their armed citizens for assistance. The best part is it will be a deterrent. Gun Free Zones do not work. Terrorists and crazies are a magnet to these areas. Let see if Butch Anderson follows the lead of the other Sheriffs. I am sure that Mario Jr. will come out against. This was clearly an Islamic terrorist, made a US citizen.

Should people who legally have the right to carry firearms carry firearms? Why would the question even have to be asked? Its legal. Its your right. Its legal to marry someone of the same sex. It's legal to abort a fetus. Its legal to file bankruptcy. Its legal to burn the flag. Its legal to marry your first cousin in New York!
Why do Liberals only want what THEY believe to be legal to be just and right? I'm not a gun nut. I think automatic weapons in private hands are a ridiculous application of the second amendment. I also believe if I am a responsible adult who passed a rigid background check and choose to carry a loaded gun to the Galleria in case some nut with an illness or an agenda tries to harm me or my family I can have a chance to fight back instead of being one more victim who will be remembered in a newspaper for a day or two and then forgotten while the murderer is glorified and defended by the ACLU.

I am a licensed gun owner of over 30 years and carry a pistol often. I want to be able to protect my family and myself if a dangerous situation should arise. Most people never think that harm might come to them or a loved one until it does and they are not prepared to defend themselves. All these liberal politicians have armed security/bodyguards 24/7 to protect them, but I can't defend myself or family. Govenor 8=DHEAD Cuomo and the POTUS have people around them with weapons that have 20 and 30 round magazine capacities, but I can't have more than seven. How hypocritical! Everyday in this country and around the world people and sometimes entire families are murdered by some piece of garbage for a few dollars. As the saying goes," I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six!" God bless the USA!!!!

Sadly most of the shootings involved ILLEGALLY purchased guns. Most recent AK47's from Russia!! It's not the legal gun owners we need to worry about. France has no gun owners, yet they too had a problem with ILLEGAL guns. Taking away our right to bear arms is going in the wrong direction!

Most of the mass shootings were carried out with weapons legally purchased - either by the shooters or second-hand line purchasers. How many went through background checks and were deemed fit. What makes anyone think a government office or even a trained psychologist would catch a 'non-responsible' potentential gun owner. And we underestimate how many do drugs. We'll be seeing many fatalities before this is finished.

I agree with the Sheriff. It is the 21st century and we live in a changing world. A responsible gun owner is not looking to have the 'wild west days' return. Rather they have the knowledge and skills to exercise their rights. Conceal carry permit holders have gone through a long process to obtain that permit. Those the permit holders are in law enforcement or former military. We might not be having this conversation if only one person had concealed a gun and used it in these tragic situations. To not exercise this right would be allowing the morons to obtain more innocent victims.
