Most of the people in this county have to pay for their own trash removal. I would love a service that picked up my grass clippings every other week. We have a compost pile. It's pretty imple and takes up little space. Free!

my buddy lives near 368 main st. a small yet city owned lot is behind his building where they are renovating some of the buildings there. talk about crackhead ally. can't even get out of your car without stepping over heroin needles. also problem is some of these places have the smallest dumpster possible which inevitably overflow and the trash gets everywhere when the trucks come to pick it up. that city lot is littered with trash and looks like a damn junkyard

Sherry, the garbage men of the city are always careful of the cans and lids. Our cans last 10 years or more. The every other week pick-up of yard debris is a pain, but workable. Hard to believe you have 4 cans of grass clippings a week? Anyway, Tuesday is garbage pick up so use those cans Wednesday for grass.

It's great that the mayor wants the city cleaned up. BUT, don't be fooled because the residents of the city are paying. I'm now paying even more for my garbage pick up. The sanitation men fling my can and lid and I'm tired of buying new cans every year. The city will now pick up grass cuttings, etc. every OTHER week. I mow my lawn every week. I can't afford to buy more lawn bags (years ago the city gave them for free and that's before we had to pay for garbage). I would need six garbage cans, four for grass and two for garbage. The mayor wants to clean up the downtown garbage. What about the people in the 8th ward? We have to pay more to make up for the people that don't pay. Thanks for NOTHING.

I appreciate the cleaning effort, but the next person to come along will just dump more filthy garbage. Fine and punish the litter bugs and educate people, and then you're on to something.

Poughkeepsie's transformation has been a long time coming, and it's nothing short of amazing. Let's get more recycle bins and compost bins out there. Add some more murals and sculptures. Bring it to life!

That said - there's a long way to go. It's important to have not just City Officials recognize the issue - but the citizens as well! I don't even live in Poughkeepsie, but make an effort to clean up litter as I walk along the streets. There's always a plastic bag floating by or stuck in some trees - try grabbing it and filling it up!

But not just cleaning it up - but working on preventing it in the first place. Securing trash-bags so candy wrappers don't fly with the wind during collection can help a whole bunch. Surely litterbugs contribute more than stray trash remnants, but there's always small steps we can each can work on to make it a better place.

The above website may be on interest to many. My son (Jordan Lamoree) and son-in-law (Patrick McGuire-owner of the soon to open Poughkeepsie Grind 107 Main St .) have been try to start a "give back to the community" movement. Their hard work and dedication should not go unnoticed. Check it out, pass the word and join in the cause.

I drove down main st the other day and was amazed at the difference. I hope we can keep it that way.
