I think the key word in your poll analysis is "yet". In mid-2011, Amazon US announced that e-book sales were exceeding paper books in total for the first time. But earlier (Jan, 2011) they had announced e-books outsold paperbacks, and in 2010 they had seen the same for a month's sales of hard bound books for the first time. I suspect that once the price-fixing case (US v. Apple and publishers) is resolved, Kindle e-book prices will drop significantly and volumes will soar.
Another perspective is the demographic one - we gave Kindles to two grandsons last Christmas, 8 and 11, and ever since their reading has skyrocketed. Grandma rebuffed my attempts to convert her two years ago, but finally started to use her new touch screen Kindle and her last six books have all been e-books. I read and enjoy both formats and I am saddened to realize paper books won't be available much longer.
