USC is reeling after the murders of two graduate students. Is the area around campus as safe as it should be?

    Jeff,
Johnny's point was not biased at all, though it was certainly emotionally charged. I go to USC and receive crime reports ALMOST EVERY DAY. The murders are big news, but what you don't hear about is the countless muggings and assaults that happen ON A REGULAR BASIS. To argue that UCLA's area is just as dangerous as USC's is simply asinine. Get your facts straight before you go accusing others.

Jonny - why do you assume this is USC's fault? You've got a lot of bias, and as usually is the case with someone with so much bias, you've got just as much ignorance to go along with it.

First, its not USC's fault where it is located. It was quite a prestigious area when it was built, and it shouldn't close its doors just because the demographics of the area change.

Second, you imply USC hides the dangers of the city from people, when in fact they do a lot to educate people.

Third, you assume that USC sits passively by without regard for their students, when they invest more money and resources towards the protection of their student body than most schools in the nation, and definitely more than any school in LA.

Fourth, while there is a lot of crime by USC, if you look at crime statistics, its on par with what you find at other universities. The other prominent Los Angeles School UCLA, for example, has the same level of yearly serious crime. This suggests that crime is attracted to Universities, which to an educated person makes sense.

This is a horrible situation, but this question is stupid. There *should* be no crime ever in a perfect world... The best thing you can do is take care of yourself, be aware, and hope you're lucky and nothing like this happens to you during your time on this earth.

I was at USC campus during spring break vising a friend, we didn't have a car so we took the bus everywhere, being a foreigner and a tourist USC neighborhood really made me feel uncomfortable and threatened even. NOT a safe place to travel by yourself or just a few girls.

This is so sad to hear. A prominent University like USC which gets millions in donations from millionaires sits in the middle of one of the most dangerous areas ive ever visited in my life. It boggles the mind that a school with so much recognition and money behind it will allow the slaughter of its students to go on without educating the campus about the dangers that lye outside the gates! These kids had no idea! Or they wouldn't of been out in the early AM in a brand new BMW. When you go to college (especially one like USC) you expect to have some sort of safety! College kids are out in all hours of the night. I will never promote this campus and i even tell all my friends from out of state and country DO NOT even think about going to USC. In my mind its just another example of how money hungry schools like this could care less about their students. This isn't the only occasion ether. Kids pay high tutitins just to look over their shoulder when they leave campus. Its disgusting. Is education really worth your life? Just listen to the story and ask the parents of the victims.
