Chocolate doesn't do a thing for me. I mean, it's nice and all, but to me it's no different than gum or pieces of hard candy. I would have no problem giving up chocolate, forever.
Butter, on the other hand, is in everything good (probably including chocolate).
I use both every morning (cocoa in the coffee and butter in the bacon, eggs, and potatoes) but I'd have to give up chocolate. Onions fried in garlic butter is on of the reasons to live.
I would choose to give up butter. There are substitutes for butter, and for many purposes a good olive oil tastes as good as or better than butter. But nothing in the world compares with an excellent high-end chocolate.

I eat chocolate only once in a while, as the good stuff is too expensive for every day consumption and the cheap stuff is too sweet to ever be eaten by anyone with taste buds. I cook with butter almost every day. And vegetable oils are no suitable substitute for fresh sweet cream butter!

Being allergic to milk, this was easy peasy to answer. XD
I'll stick with Chocolate. I cook with Olive Oil for almost everything.

Diabetic, so already said goodbye to chocolate.

I love chocolate but rarely eat it. Mostly because I am a chocolate snob. Butter, however, is a requirement in cooking. Remember that I HAD to make a choice and life will be a paler version.

I was raised on Country Crock margarine. That actual butter stuff? I'm still suspicious of it.

Butter. No contest.
Margarine is an acceptable substitute.
Carob, on the other hand, tastes like an old bicycle tire.

On what planet is it possible to bathe without butter?
Wait, I mean cook without butter?

Being lactose intolerant, I found that survey quite easy.
Butter has decent substitutes; olive oil for roasting/sauteeing/pasta, margarine or jam or honey for bread, shortening for baking (okay, it's not as good, but it works).
There's no substitute for real good chocolate though. (Though if the choice were more specific, like Land o'Lakes butter or Hershey's chocolate then I'd have to rethink my vote. Hershey's sucks.)

Other things can be satisfactorily substituted for butter.
Good chocolate has no substitute.

I can cook without chocolate, but not without butter.
I would give up butter of course. I can spread my bread with Nutella instead.

Disloyal as this may seem from a loyal Wisconsinite, the fact is that chocolate (especially the dark strong stuff with character, not the bland Hersheyfied wishy-washy kinds) is far, far healthier and more stimulating to the body and brain. Butter is merely very, very, very, VERY tasty fat.

Butter is the unifying element of food, nay - of the universe! It cannot be shunned. It might be a sacrifice, but I am willing to stand by the almighty butter in these contentious times.

I don't eat chocolate or anything sweet so easy dilemma.
Chocolate. I really can't stomach it anymore, even though I love it. Too much of it just tears my stomach to shreds. Butter, I don't eat nearly as much, and is essential in some of my favorite foods, pancakes chief among them...

What kind of sick mind even comes up with that question? I could have a nervous breakdown trying to answer it!
I may have to saute some chocolate chips in butter just to calm down. :)

Give up the lifeforce-sustaining ambrosia that is chocolate? Why in the name of Grabthar's Hammer would I ever consider that?
I haven't liked chocolate since I was 11 years old. Butter, on the other hand, is vital to having any quality of life. So, no contest.
Butter/fresh baked bread (or even stale sourdough)
Butter/pasta
Butter/veggies
Butter/warm cinnamon rolls
Butter/bagels (and *then* add the cream cheese)
Chocolate/wine - fabulous but... not for all the time.
