Should a series of books be continuous (e.g. You must read them in order 1-2-3), or be self-contained (e.g. You can read them in any order)?

Continuous (I like to follow the same character from start to end)

Self-Contained (I like being able to buy a book when it comes out without worrying about needing to read the ones that come before it)
