I don't even see how this is a debate between discipline and 'abuse'. First off, he may have been disciplining his child and it RESULTED in abuse.

This is a teenager, its not like the child is gonna lay down for a spanking. So spanking, choking, etc is fine as long as you know your limits with anger. Burning a child, etc is abuse. Back in the day kids were beat with branches, extension cords, etc and even the neighbors spanked the kids. That generation had more respect than these kids today. Frankly people need to mind their own business including the law and let people do what they are supposed to which is discpline their child as even punsihments nowadays rarely works.

Proverbs 13:24(KJV) He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
If you really want to know what the bible says about discipline, corporal punishment etc. read the bible. Also this links below sums it up..

I'm no fan of pastors but I'm with the pastor on this one. He is responsible for his children. the police do not have to live with the kids and they certainly aren't taking responsibility for the kids' actions. If the daughter had gone out and got in trouble then the police would want to arrest the parent. Kids need discipline and that discipline is not always a "time-out"!

@ Randy I agree with your views because people tend to take the phrase out of content and apply it to their situation. By no means is this discipline when a person places his hands around someone neck. @Frank choking someone is not love. @ Felicia I agree with your point of view about spanking is not the only form of discipline. I have never seen the word choking describe as a form of discipline.

This is the problem with the young people of today... no fear of consequences for their wrong behavior . In my youth I never heard of children killing their parents in their sleep, fighting hitting and cursing them . Respect has been totally dismissed by the young people of today. I do have a question..who called the police anyway,it was a family matter.. no guns.. no blood.

The phrase "spare the rod and spoil the child" is often incorrectly attributed to the Christian Bible. It does not appear there. It was first written in a poem by Samuel Butler in 1664. 1Corporal punishment is strongly recommended in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). Most of the biblical quotations advocating corporal punishment of children appear in the book of Proverbs. Christians interpret these passages in different ways. Like, whatever their agenda is.

I would rather for him to love her the way he did than for someone else to rape or take advantage of her before it's too late. In my opinion, I think he did know wrong. Just discipline.

I know so many parents live strongly by " spare the rod spoil the child" but I think that we sometimes forget that a spanking isn't the only form of discipline. A lot of times a spanking just allows adults to release their anger and no lesson is being learned but to fear you when the lesson should be to respect you.
