Do you support the controversial proposal that would expand the prestigious MAST Academy on Key Biscayne?

The mission behind MAST was to give inner city students a chance to excell and have opportunities to obtain a prestigious education. They accomplished this through their rigorous academic programs and sensational school environment that its students would never see in the suburbs. The school is a success because 100% of the students there want to be there and not because they feel entitled to be there. If MAST is taken from its magnet model and transformed into just another school/country club for the affluent it will be the end of a great era and lost opportunities for some of the finest students in this county.

I sat in on the Informational Meeting tonight at MAST and felt as if this expansion is more about warehousing overcrowded students than respecting (or preserving) MAST's diversity and entrance requirements. I will go to the school board meeting tomorrow in hopes that my testimonial can offer a face to MAST's school ID on a page. I hope it helps.

As an alumni of c/o 1999, I am outraged that the School Board would try to squeeze this in at the last possible moment hoping that it wouldn't give the MAST community of past & present to make our voices heard. The Village of Key Biscayne is trying to buy its way into MAST, completely violating the mission statement of the school & the policies already in place for a magnet program.

If Key Biscayne residents don't feel that Coral Gables High (their home school) is up to their standards, then they should invest in their home school! Comparisons to Coral Reef are not at all valid. Coral Reef has much more space to house its students, it still does not guarantee seats into any of its magnet programs for local residents, it houses multiple magnet programs, & is not being unduly influenced by a richer demographic for preferential treatment. If a comparison is to be made, then the only applicable schools would be New School & DASH. Neither are being reintegrated with the local population, nor is there a proposal for such a move that I know of at this time.

Please check out our online petition on Change.org [http://www.change.org/petitions/opposition-to-proposal-f-7-stand-against-proposal-f-7-to-change-mast]. We already have 1,256 signatures & it was only fully revealed to the MAST community this past Thursday.

Tell your School Board ELECTED officials, that you do not like the corruption of a magnet high school that is dedicated to providing a quality education to Miami-Dade's children. Email them with your thoughts. You can find out how to contact each school board official at http://www.dadeschools.net/schoolboard/bdmembers.asp. Key Biscayne residents can apply for admissions to MAST Academy, just like any other Miami-Dade student already. This should be a level playing field! Not an opportunity for a wealthier demographic to buy seats at a public magnet school of excellence.
