Damon IS Spike, (ripped off from BtVS like many things in TVD) but without the badass hair.
Bad boy relative of good boy shows up, fall in love with main female protagonist, changes for her. The only difference is that Spike got his soul HIS SOUL. Not to make Buffy love him, or even to be good enough for her - but to be the kind of man who would never hurt her.
So yeah
I'm a bit disappointed in the world right now.

I love the tvds. Damon is bad when he wants to be, But spike and angelus they are the true bad bad guys. buffy the vampire and the spin off angel where the classic forrunners to the likes of twilight , tvds, that we have to day, am a big buffy and angel fan i also like twilight but the vampire diaries rock, it a great series, wht i like about it you never know just wht to expect, only time will tell if it will survive and be come a great classic along with buffy and angel and be showen in many years to come for a new breed of avid vampire fans i would like to think so.

With all due respect, it is a matter of opinion. If you think Spike is a better character, then that's what you think. I don't want to cause offence, but the way everyone is talking is starting to seem like "what they think is right."
I personally think that Damon is a better character than Spike, and I think that The Vampire Diaries is a better show.
Hatce- if you don't even know who Damon is, then you must not watch The Vampire Diaries, so it's really not your place to claim it's a rip off of Buffy. Nor would it be your place to decide if the books are like the movies. And if you don't even know who he is, how would you know if he was a 'puppy' after Elena? I love Damon, but I haven't seen Buffy, so I'm not running around saying how TVD is better. I wouldn't know, as I *have not seen it.* It irks me when people assume things they really know nothing about.

Sorry - but the Teen Choice Awards as a reference and justification for best character and a series has little to do with the quality of said characters or series. The Teen Choice Awards are just that - A selection made by a narrow targeted audience. The general viewer includes peoples of a wide range of ages and interest and I can assure you that the general viewing audience would not care one bit about the Teen Choice Awards. Where TVD is primarily targeted to a younger audience, BtVS was created to be a compelling and powerful series for that wide range general viewer.
In the history of Vampires characters, I believe that Spike will always be one of the iconic characters along side the Bram Stoker Dracula and the Anne Rice Lestat & Louie. These were characters who significantly impacted the Vampire stories and characters.
In every respect other than physical looks, Spike is by far a greater character than Damon as presented in the TV series.

I love damon, however, gotta be Spike all the way. Damon does that thing with his eyes too much that it turns too ridiculous. Damon is second place for me, Spike first.
And of course Buffy is the best vampire show ever. It was a huge success even before the vampire trend that we have today (that I'm more than sure helps TVD a lot), Buffy has done it by itself, no trend needed. And honestly, TVD lacks the subtext and character development that Buffy has. That makes Buffy better, written show wise. Even if TVD (the book) came out before Buffy, it's pretty obvious that the way they deliver Elena-Stefan-Damon characters+triangle is coppied from Buffy-Angel-Spike. They're exactly the same, too the same. Words in book can be translated in your imagination differently. But putting it on screen is completely different. And they're very much like Buffy-Angel-Spike. It's not a mistake that I ship Elena and Damon and not Elena and Stefan, because I ship Buffy and Spike. Which proves to me that the characters and the love triangle is the same thing.
So Damon is the new Spike and I love him. But I'll stick with my all time favorite vampire, Spike (William the Bloody). Oh, and not Stefan/Angel.
Just so everyone is clear- Damon is not a 'knock-off' of Spike. The first Vampire Diaries book was written in 1991, and thus is where Damon, as a character, began. Buffy the Vampire Slayer did not come out until 1997. I'm not arguing if either is better than the other, I just don't like it when people assume a character is copied off another when that so clearly isn't true. As Damon was created before Spike, it's impossible for Damon to be the knock-off version of him.

Spike of course !!!!! Buffy the vampire is the best show of vampire . Buffy has won many award, it is a cult series that even after 15 years and always appreciated. The vampire diaries is a series that works Yes but who has fans really hysterical and crazy for most and ian for me is an actor who deserves not the name of actor because apart the vampire diaries on the not see too much . James is amazing in the role of spike. Spike without hesitation

Well there you go, Oda. You are going by the Teen Choice Awards to prove the better show. That in and of itself may, perhaps be why I disagree with you. But then again, I am a die-hard BTVS fan. In fact my AKC registered bulldog is named Spike (although his AKC papers say William the Bloody) Long live the Whedonverse!!!
Oda, you can like or dislike whoever you want- but if you're trying to "prove" why TVD is a better show than BtVS, I'd choose a different argument than the Teen Choice Awards. 1- Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been nominated for 20 TCAs during it's television run, and was actually nominated for 98 DIFFERENT awards in total during it's run (that doesn't include being nominated for the same awards year after year... that would bring the number way into the 100s in just 7 years). 2- Way more important than Teen Choice Awards- BtVS was nominated for 14 emmys, won 3 emmys, and was nominated for Golden Globes as well. Those are the most prestigious television awards. 3- During the 2008 emmys (5 years after BtVS has already gone off the air), fans voted the BtVS season 5 finale as the most memorable dramatic moment in television's HISTORY: beating out every single dramatic television show in the history of television.
I'm not putting down TVD. I'm sure it's great and while I stopped watching after the first few episodes, I know others really love it. But in the awards department- Buffy the Vampire Slayer has done EXTREMELY well- with recognition for critics, experts, AND fans. So you can't really use that argument to try to say BtVS is "pathetic."
Anyway... I love Spike. I think he's one of the best television characters ever! He's a rebellious, sexy, clever, funny, heroic, witty badass.

Really Buffy the vampire slayer is the mot pathetic show i have ever seen. How can you even compare it too the vampire diaries. TID on 10 teenchoice awards resently. And many møre before that. I don't even think Btvs has even been nominated for one. Ian Somerhalder and Damon Salvatore all the way.
