Well, it is their decision mostly. The French culture is important as it is vital to Canadian history. Even if Quebec leaves, Canada should still be French and English. There making a big fuss about it, and if they want to leave let them leave. Imagine if they start a war like other places. But they cannot get funds from Canada and if they want to make their own country, they better start with the PROVINCE's money, not Canada. And they would have to remove Canadian national buildings or use the building and make Quebec nation buildings. If people should seperate, they should have a vote if they want to seperate. THEN SEPERATE OR NOT. Canada, just let them do what they want to do! Francophone heritage is important but that's it! I will only mind if they get violent. WHICH THEY MIGHT EVEN DO! It is difficult but in a year they could seperate if they hate being in this united country. I personally would like them to stay, but ultimately, it is their decision.

These poll results are shocking...and yet i expect it from the rest of canada for some reason...its sad how fucking easily people give up in this country... No one fights for whats right anymore, we just sit idily by and wait for someone else to do something for us. no wonder people want to leave... no one gives a shit anymore, everyones just become satified with being complacent and letting whoever do whatever. What happened to standing up for whats right, or standing up for our brothers and sisters. Not all people in quebec are separists, yet the rest of canada paints a bleak picture for quebec... in fact polls show that support for separation is very low even amon francophones, especially the younger generation. And people are seeing that every time a pq government gets in it kills the economy. Say NO to incompetent and foolish governments in EVERY province. not just quebec... not just for your sake, but for the sake of the confederation as a whole.

  • Heather - 10 years ago

I would love to see Quebec separate. They are the "spoiled little kids" who get whatever they want and still complain. They are never happy. I think most Canadians are tired of their attitude and double standards. GOOOOOOO leave the rest of us alone!

  • ray - 10 years ago

let them go, as long as they do not use our currency, that we both have a border, no dual citizenship!!!

  • Will - 10 years ago

I'm also tired as a Canadian of this whole thing. The PQ is full of radicals that wouldn't know their ass if they were sitting on it. Quebec has been separated for years just unofficially. They recognize the Canadian Constitution when it suits them. Bill 101 should be done away with. It is the cause of most problems. Language police bah humbug. They are even attempting to control language posted on the internet. I say good luck to that one. I would hope that the good citizens of Quebec will send a strong message in this election and bury the PQ once and for all. They are a Party of NUTS!!!!!

  • Linda Graham - 10 years ago

I'm tired of the whole thing. If they want to go, they go but they go alone. They don't go with anything Canadian.......maybe Europeans will let them use the Euro. They should get NO MORE money from Ottawa. Done. I won't be visiting with tourist dollars either. I won't spend money in a country that doesn't try to help me with the language. So rude. AND they'll need a passport to visit Canada. Period.

  • G. William Streeter - 12 years ago

The whole debate (this time) is "press induced".
The separtists only got 31% of the popular vote.
When is the press going to "shut up" on this and start putting focus on the "real issues"; the economy and the provincial debt?
I suppose that will mean doing some real work for them.

Sitting here and reading this in Montreal, I must say, if they weren't so dismally tragic, some of these comments would be absolutely hilarious. Many have made some valid arguments, but let's just recap and point out some choice excerpts, all replete with an impressive mastery of the English language that most seek to promote:

"Well i think enough is enough.. im so tired of them in quebec wanting french all the time there"
    -D Martin

"My Grandfather was a first world war vet and he hated the French"
    -Owen

"NO WAY !!!! I'll pick up a gun and fight to keep my Canada whole !!!!"
    -mike

"I would gladly donate to a one way ticket to anywhere but her."
    -Owen again!

    "lets put up a fence"
    -Ivan

    "Kick there sorry asses out."
    -Owen with the hat-trick!

    "C-Ya!!!!"
    - Peter

You fellas are great; keep up the good work!

  • Al,C. Johnson - 12 years ago

The comments and statements made are indicative of the anger and frustration exhibited by Canadians in what has become known as the ROC. What has been proven beyond doubt is that a Country cannot exist using two or more "Official languages". I am surprised that attention has not been drawn to the fact that Quebec is "Officially French speaking!" that should automatically negate any claim for "Bilingualism.

  • Martin - 12 years ago

I'm from Quebec and let me tell you that i wouldn'T mind leaving Quebec if i had the money to do so. The fact is that i really don't care about all the sovereinty Bullshit and i sure don't care about all the complaining and whining everybody here in Quebec does all the time. It'S like where a small children that's never satisfy and always wants more. We always want to be treated special because we are different but we don'T want to give back. I rather be a canadian then a Quebecers but for right now, i have to live with the fact that i live in Quebec.

  • Concerned Canadian - 12 years ago

If Quebec goes, I'm afraid Canada won't resist americanization for very long. It has already started and is beating very strong.

  • Mark M. - 12 years ago

If you think that Quebec should abandon the Canadian currency if it leaves :

You have no fucking clue about the whole issue and you are an idiot.

You have no fucking clue, because you're deeply ignorant if you don't even know why it would be a disaster for Canada if Quebec got rid of the Canadian currency.
You are an idiot, because you act and speak like you know shit about the issue, when you don't.

The comments here are filled with deeply ignorant retards.

Knowledgeable people know that Quebec must not leave Canada and that Canada should do everything it can to make it stay. Knowledgeable people also know that if Quebec decides to leave, there is nothing Canada can do. Knowledgeable people know that when people separate and become a country, they take the territory with them. Territories have split, become new countries and been internationally recognized as such through means that were much less democratic than a referendum. So bitch, please. Take your pathetic hateful ignorant wishful thinking, GTFO and get a fucking clue. Or 2... or 30000.

Maybe they wouldn't be so whiny if there weren't a bunch of clueless redneck so willing to - still, many years later - get completely rid of the French language, by, say, paying them a one way ticket to France, or whatever other mean you can come up with. If only the native were more, they'd probably want to pay our English asses a one way ticket to England too. So yeah, shut the fuck up. You are a fucking shame and probably a worse threat to our country's integrity than Quebec is.

  • Ridiculous - 12 years ago

Do I have to remind all the idiotic Quebec bashers about how the federal shits its pants every time Quebec has a referendum on separation?
Why would the federal government shit its pants and try so hard to retain Quebec if it's such a cancer and money leech to Canada?

You think Quebec should leave? Well clearly, the government, a.k.a. those in the know, think otherwise.

So think about it twice before wanting to throw them out. You might get it. And regret it. Thank your federal government for having been more clever and knowledgeable than you.

  • Maxime - 12 years ago

These comments are hilarious, you guys sound like a bunch of ignorant rednecks.
Are you seriously hating these people because they speak more than one language? Pathetic.

-"Without the transfer payments Quebec would be another Greece."
You obviously don't know shit about economy and it shows. Québec has great potential when it comes to economy but is held down by the federal government which prefers to invest in the car industry in Ontario or in the oil sands in Alberta.

-"No Army, Navy or Air Force, I wouldn't even let them share our money, let them make their own."
I don't think you understand how making a country works. Canada would need to give us back what we paid for.
Also, Canada would be the first to beg for Québec to keep the Canadian dollar, otherwise it would completely ruin the value of the dollar and fuck up their economy.

-"I say declare marshal law, send in the Army and remove the gov't of quebec and lets put an end to this discussion once and for all"
    You can't be serious.

-" they would be begging to return to Canada."
Nope. This has NEVER happened, no country has ever regretted their independence.
Why would it happen with Québec?

-"Students protest for minor tuition fees whereas the rest of Canada has to pay higher fees"
A 75% rise sure is minor. Also, it's not Québec's fault if the rest of Canada is too retarded to understand that free education is the way to go. Every single country that established it realized that it was a revenue and not an expense.

-"I can assure everyone that the majority of people in this province would bolt back to Canada if Quebec separated"
Congratulation, this is the most retarded statement I've read this week.
It's just so wrong I don't even know where to start.

-"Then we can use the BILLIONS in transfer payments we send to them as well as the money from the OLA , all 4.3 BILLION of it, and use it for Canada's health Care and pension"
And Québec can take the 50 BILLION they give to the federal government and use it for big projects, everybody wins.

  • Catherine - 12 years ago

Ok, we can leave if you want. But then you wont have our votes in federal elections anymore and you'll be stuck forever with conservative governments ! ha ha!

  • Paul Ménard - 12 years ago

I'm from Quebec. Thank you for your comments. Even after what I read, I feel we should learn about each other. It is sad that we reached this point. What do you think if instead we were throwing out people from Alberta but the land belongs to Canada? What do you think if we were throwing in the garbage the unilingual culture? After all, don't you think that is better to be bilingual?

My vision of the Canada is more open. In this world that is changing so quickly, I would like my children to speak 3, 4 and even more languages. Beleaving the language of business is english is truly a lazy concept of what we should learn. The language of business is the language of your customer. For exemple, do you think I would have more success to sale in France in French that a folk that just can speak english? Think about China now!

Yes, I recognize that Quebec have to do a little more like we should all do. Most of us are against separation ( think about the result of the Bloc Quebecois at the last election). You should all work together to make our country a better place to leave.

Thank you to all my friends in Canada (I have a few, can you imagine, from Alberta!)

Kingsley said « The policy of French unilingualism in Quebec vs official bilingualism in the rest of Canada is unfair and unreasonable. »

Correction : ALL the provinces but one (N.-B.) are unilingual, but the Federal departments and agencies work in both languages in several parts of the country, including Quebec.

Anyway, the anglo-minority in QC has nothing to complain about. They can get all the services they want in English (even from the Provincial Government).

Maybe this could have been avoided if minorities had been respected in the ROC. For about 100 years, Native languages and French were practically outlawed in the ROC. Today, Quebec language schooling laws are nothing compared to past language laws in the ROC. At least anglophones in Quebec are allowed to go to school in their first language (which wasn't the case for French speaking people and the Natives in the ROC until not that long ago). Quebec taxpayers even pay for English schools in QC.

Remember these attacks on French Canadians?

    - Règlement 17 (Regulation 17) in Ontario (1912) http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/articles/ontario-schools-question
    - The Official Language Act of Manitoba in 1890 (their own version of Bill101) Manitoba was bilingual until then.
    - Common Schools Act in N.-B. (1871), forcing the Acadians to go to English schools.
    - Nova Scotia Education Act or Tupper Act (1864), prohibiting French schools.
    - Alberta School Act (1905) & Saskatchewan School Act (1909) imposing the English language to French speaking pupils.
    - In 1927, the Ku Klux Klan moves north into Canada, especially Saskatchewan, where it opposed Catholics and French Canadians.
    - In 1929 and 1931, more laws prohibited French to be spoken in schools in Saskatchewan, and the government refused to hire teachers from Quebec.
    - Tory MP D'Alton MCCARTHY attacks on Catholic schools and French-language schooling in the North-West Territories.
    - The Deportation of the Acadians : http://www.learnliberty.org/videos/expulsion-acadians

    ...etc.

Not far from being state-sponsored ethnic cleansing!

So, who's shoving their language down the throat of others?

  • SkidRowTrash - 12 years ago

I would be so happy to see this horrible horrible place not just leave Canada, but get thrown out. Actually ejected. They can take their horrible bilingualism with them and they will lose all their government jobs in Canada.

Quebec people should not be allowed to work outside of their country either. All this bilingual BS needs to end. If you really want to help people be able to communicate, teach them ENGLISH! It will be FAR better FOR THEM in the long run, as the world uses English as the official language of business.

From what I hear spoken around me from unqualified people who have gotten high level jobs based only on the fact that they are from Quebec, they don't know how to speak french or english properly. Their sentences are a mishmash of french with english words or sentences mixed throughout. I have never heard a single entire french sentence in my life, just butchered french, and butchered english.

You can't even get a job here in Ottawa as a garbage man who hangs on the side of the garbage truck and tosses bags into the back unless you are fluently english and french, written, spoken and read.. I wonder why we hate them so much.. hmm.

Anyways, get out of Canada, you do not want to be here. We certainly do not want to have you here. Your mere pressense lowers the quality of life of the majority of those around you. This is a fact. You have people believing that the only way to succeed in life is to study a minority language in school to get a good job, instead of studying something of actual value such as math, art, science, construction.. etc..

    Get lost Quebec.

  • Kingsley - 12 years ago

As a bilingual ex Montrealer I would regret the departure of Montreal from my country. However, I assume Canadians would insist that "Le Nouveau Quebec", which was transferred to Provincial jurisdiction prior to WW1, will revert to being Canadian territory. I understand the desire to retain the French language, which is under enormous pressure in English North America. On the other hand I find the tactic of forcing the Anglo minority to disappear from public view is repugnant to ethics and equity. The policy of French unilingualism in Quebec vs official bilingualism in the rest of Canada is unfair and unreasonable.

  • John - 12 years ago

Quebec can leave Canada tomorrow. We would be better off without them.

  • Clarence - 12 years ago

    BYE BYE!

  • Chris - 12 years ago

Let them go and please take the official languages act with them. Then we can use the BILLIONS in transfer payments we send to them as well as the money from the OLA , all 4.3 BILLION of it, and use it for Canada's health Care and pension. This money can then be used to serve all Canadians not just the French. Oh yeah, and they'll need to start paying their portion of the federal debt ASAP. Aurevoir! Tired of the entitlement attitude, please take your culture and go.

  • Sue - 12 years ago

If speaking French and maintaining a French culture is so important to them there is already a country like that, buy them all a one way ticket to France. All Canadians should be treated the same, no special rules for one group of people. I see their desire to separate as treason. If our government decides to let them separate then treat them as a separate country, they don't get our money, services or military. They don't even get the whole province as I am sure the Natives in northern Quebec don't want to leave Canada. Enough of these demanding people.

  • Dave - 12 years ago

I have really great memories from my younger years of competing in biathlon in quebec and seeing all the history and beutiful scenery I did see but, I'm really tired of listening to them Kermit the Frogs wanting to split from canada!!! I say let em go and see how the grass is not so greener on the other side for them. Too bad they have the parti quebecois to drag them down as a province. They'll ruin them as a country to. Enough of canada bending over backwards for them and kissing there asses. SEE YA!!!!!
Probably the one's that tried getting KFC to get canada to vote POUTINE as our national dish. I love poutine but get bent on that poll.

  • PETER - 12 years ago

    C-YA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Karen - 12 years ago

Let them go - Enough is enough - and put an end to the Official Language Act for the rest of Canada !

  • D Martin - 12 years ago

Well i think enough is enough.. im so tired of them in quebec wanting french all the time there and make it so that we in ontario have to serve them in french why? when they will not serve us in english in quebec they cant be bothered to make dual language signs and we have to have them here in ontario... it need s to stop i will not go into quebec beause they will not speak english..

  • David - 12 years ago

As a Canadian living in Quebec, I can assure everyone that the majority of people in this province would bolt back to Canada if Quebec separated. Everyone I speak to here, including French speakers, are fed up with the provincial governments continual desire to do things 'different in Quebec' just to be different than the rest of the country. Ever try to get a drivers license here? Ever try to move before the 1st of July? Ever try to get car insurance? Pay a hydro bill? Even the TV is horrible here. When you ask Videotron why they don't have the channels or features of other providers around Canada they don't even know what you're talking about. You know there are laws here preventing car dealerships from servicing vehicles on the weekends?!! Have you ever driven on the roads here?!?! They have a Milk Cartel here for heaven sake...

So yes, let the province go. Move the RCAF bases to Manitoba. Move the military contracts to other manufactures in Canada. Watch the Ontario population double. The smart ones will leave, and the rest of Canada can go back to saving billions a year in not having to have everything in two languages. Have the Canadian Football League to move the Alouettes to Moncton. Have the NHL change the name of their team to the Montreal Quebecers..

  • Mike - 12 years ago

Let them go.....or kick them out if they start a ruckus again. However their hands have to be completely removed from the Canadians pocket. Canada would have to set up border protection. Bring everything national out of Quebec, for example, The space agency, Revenue Canada, military bases, etc. Reinstate Canada as a uni lingual nation (English). Think of the job creation for Canada establishing new signage, building the new government buildings and all the new border protection agents making sure no one living in Quebec is coming to Canada to work.

  • Marty - 12 years ago

Agree with the concept of sending them on their way. Have to give them an option to retain, lets say, Quebec City. Doesn't it already have a wall around it? ? ? Start thinking of a new territory/provincial name though, as the Aboriginals will undoubtedly claim the rest as their traditional lands. That's OK. Well, except Montreal - kind of like that part to stay.

  • John - 12 years ago

Without the transfer payments Quebec would be another Greece. As it is now they have been a leech for many years giving special quirks to education and such. Students protest for minor tuition fees whereas the rest of Canada has to pay higher fees. More holidays, retirement benifits etc.

Yep if they tried to do it on their own without any assistance from the rest of the country they would be begging to return to Canada.

  • Riders Rule - 12 years ago

    Adiós!

  • IVAN - 12 years ago

lets put up a fence ONT MAN BOARDER wester canada has been getting the short end for ever all the wants is for us to pay the bills and they make the rules

  • yancykin - 12 years ago

Everyone is tired of Quebec wanting and getting special treatment. They have taken way too much from other Canadians. The land that makes up the province of Quebec is Canada's. If the people don't want to be a part of Canada then leave. Go back to France or some other country. If you live in Canada be Canadians. Settle this separation issue once and for all.

  • Moses - 12 years ago

If they wish to leave I say let them. But if they do they should become truly independent. No help from the rest of Canada financially or in any other way whatsoever.
If they stay, any special treatment towards their province should end.

  • Wayne sutton - 12 years ago

Give each Quebecer who wants to leave Canada $1'000000 each and a one way ticket to wherever they choose to live and say goodbye.

  • mike - 12 years ago

The english and french have been fighting over this land for more then 200 years (against and with each other). When is enough, enough. I am tired of this discussion. If we continue to give this province special treatment, then in time other people will want their own special treatment. I don't mean to sound bad here, but people coming to Canada get treated by the government, better then their own citizens and people of Quebec are no different. Why doesn't Ontario get a bigger slice of the gov't budget since we have the most people living in the country???

I say declare marshal law, send in the Army and remove the gov't of quebec and lets put an end to this discussion once and for all. This is Sedition plain and simple and to me is the act of a traitorous people...you want to use our rights and freedoms, money, but want your own government. NO WAY !!!! I'll pick up a gun and fight to keep my Canada whole !!!!

  • Jordan - 12 years ago

Many are commenting on the bilingual 'crap'... what about our French Speaking citizens in New Brunswick? I think we should support our country as a whole. I think it would be a shame to see such a big, central province of Canada be released. Sure, there are political issues, but won't there always be? That's just how the world (our country included) seems to run.
It's understandable that many Ontario people want to see them stay... they're our neighbours. Maybe, too, that's why the west seems to care less. They're part of Canada, a country which I'm very proud of. You know you were proud of everyone, Quebecers included, for the Olympics the last 2 weeks... if you're going to show your support at all, don't pick and choose when to show it!

  • Brenda - 12 years ago

I say stay but only as an equal to the rest of us, that is only fair, no special treatment whatsoever. If that does not cut it then when they opt out then print your own money, honey.

  • Owen - 12 years ago

I would gladly donate to a one way ticket to anywhere but her. Kick there sorry asses out. My Grandfather was a first world war vet and he hated the French. He always told me the only way to make it home alive was to make sure the French were in front of you. Enough is enough, let them go.

  • RD - 12 years ago

Send them packing,, enough is enough.

  • pops-one - 12 years ago

I would hate to see them leave because they are part of our country. But, I would let them go so they can see for themselves that it ain't all roses. I would definitely be opposed to letting them share any of our resources. No Army, Navy or Air Force, I wouldn't even let them share our money, let them make their own. Let them pay to be a part of NATO or NORAD. No special favours.

  • Jed - 12 years ago

I don't think that LET THEM GO is quite strong enough. After decades of putting up with the spoiled brats, I think we should rephrase the terminology to MAKE them go. Either that or we should demand a level playing field.

  • Olivier - 12 years ago

Quebec has been nothing but a tax teat sucking entity since the Plains of Abraham battle which, as is usual for French armies, they lost.. They are a non-productive, lazy, self-entitled and corrupt bunch of welfare bums. LET THEM GO !!!

  • Jacob - 12 years ago

    Let 'em go...Please.

  • Pat - 12 years ago

Enough is enough. Let them go. No more special treatment and no more bilingual signs, etc. in Ontario please. I am really tired of their sense of entitlement.

  • Shelley - 12 years ago

Sure, let them leave. But the land belongs to Canada.

  • Dave - 12 years ago

As a whole, Canada has been bending forward and taking it long enough from Quebec.
If the want to go let them. Then get rid of all this bilingual crap and save us a fortune. Like a bad child, there's just so much you can do, eventually you have to let them go and be on their own and hope for the best.
