While I have nothing against either hairstyle and I am not particularly a fan of Hampton University, I have to stand in defense of them. First, as a private institution, Hampton U has the right to set any standard they choose. If you don't agree with their rules and regulations, attend another institution. Second, like it or not, corporate America is a white-dominated environment. They have a certain ideal of how they feel a corporate individual should look, and they are not concerned with African-American or anyone else's heritage. I worked in the corporate world for 10 years, and if someone came in as the proverbial Italian or Irish, they were looked down upon just as well. Yes, HU is an HBCU, and people attend because they feel their culture will understood, appreciated and nurtured, but the function of the School of Business is to produce individuals that will be able to enter into the corporate environment. And they do that consistently. Right or wrong, those hairstyles are not looked upon favorably. Hampton University knows this and has no incentive to change their stance until the corporate environment changes. And the best place to do that from is inside.

In corporate america there is a uniform...for all races. Yes, one needs to understand the potential pitfalls in deciding to wear a natural hairstyle as a first impression in corporate america based on that required uniform. I feel the message here should be one of understanding that you may be potentially passed up for an offer because of the hairstyle that you choose to wear, but an all out ban is a very aggressive positioning A large part of professionalism is your attire and appearance. The unfortunate truth is that many students do not understand the importance of your professionalism required to "play the game" in corporate america...and for that reason, the extremely conservative stance that Hampton has taken makes sense, and is not completely too far fetched, and not an issue. For example, in the military...there is no option to wear a hairstyle as such. Why would it be any different for one who is training at Hampton's MBA program to serve corporate america? There is no restriction as to which hairstyle one decides to wear AFTER successfully completing the MBA program at their school...which is only 2-5 years of one's life. If you aren't willing to make an adjustment as simple as temporarily cutting your hair for the advancement of self then you may have a hard time operating in the corporate culture in our country.
Young men shave their heads bald in pursuit of their fraternal birth without question...why would you not be willing to do the same in pursuit of your corporate career? Let's get out priorities in order...

I am totally disgusted and extemely offended that Hampton University, a prestigious HBCU would perpetuate the coonification of our young black kids seeking higher education. By restricting NATURAL hair styles of students in the MBA program, Hampton University is promoting white supremacy and sending the message that black culture is unprofessional and unworthy of the opportunity of intellectual matriculation. Hampton's mission statement should be "Assimulating promising students for Massa's corporate plantation in the 21st century.

LOOK professional, if you take this course...years ago,we didn;t want to wear braids,cornrolls,etc. a nice haircut ,and suit..
