washington realized that the move from slavery to social and financial independance was long and hard, particularily with the fresh wounds from the shackles of slavery still impacting the vast majority of former black slaves with education being a good platform to start. the hostility of many white southerners would further retard any advancement on the part of blacks if any signs of weakness appeared. debois' tenth was a good concept but as we are now 150 yrs out of shackles, the social problems loaded on society by the neglected 90% could easily contribute to the downfall of this once mighty nation. considering the times both men were giants of the era!!
